new to JWN
by Brad Wilson inhave been a member of jwr since 2008 and have not been to hall since june 2009, have celebrated 2 yrs without memorial - woohoo - that being said i have stopped by here frequently and decided yesterday to join your group.. it has been very enjoyable to read your stories as well as the other group i have been with, and so it just seemed reasonable to belong to both.. my story is no differant than all the others, the only thing is i was not born in.
that being said i also have no real issues with being an apostate (although i do believe it is used in the perjorative sense by the wt).. peace - brad.

I've lurked a long time: JW's produce some of the most paranoid humans
by Unlearn ini'll keep this brief for now.. long time lurker (4 years or so).. born-in, elder, used on district level (last talk i gave before i left was the baptisimal talk), and lots of hard time put in...before i finally made the move to split.
it's a long stoy, much like many of yours...but with it's own little interesting twists.
more details in the future, perhaps.. as i said, ive lurked here for a while.. its funny: for a long time i'd only come on late at night.

Smoking
by Tired of the Hypocrisy inafter my brother passed away in september of 2010 i started smoking again.
at first i would hide the fact from my wife's dad by burning a cigar candle and making sure the ashes and butts were not in plain sight.
but as time went on i just said to eff it.

I have smoked most of my life. I hid it when I was a JW and just could not quit. I quit smoking four months ago (without any help from Jehovah I might add) because I could no longer afford to smoke. I think being a JW added so much stress that I couldn't quit and now that I am out of the borg I have relaxed so I was able to do it. I still want to smoke though. I don't think the need to smoke will ever leave.

Here Comes "The Sun"
by MoneurMallard inwhat are everyone's thoughts on the concept of a solar deity in relation to the jesus story?.
now this is something i have entertained over the years, the stunning relationship of the solar myths and the way the gospels describe jesus' death and resurrection as compared with the roman saturnalia.
it's odd that jw's are about to recognize that christmas doesn't originate with christ (thank god for that because i still celebrate christmas and don't care if it has anything to do with a religious figure or not, i celebrate it because i like the idea of giving people gifts, i love the smell of the trees, i love the lights, snow, all of it... i could care less if a thousand year old prophet in another continent thinks it's a "custom of the nations".... well i love america and it's a nation that deserves to be thankful for it's luck of the draw, and if it wants to mix customs and holidays, so be it..... your thoughts, fellow ex-socks?.

I celebrate it. I love it!

Plymouth Brethren, ever heard of them?

about my fingers:
I left my son's room with clothing in my arms-then I remembered something I had forgotten still the room; I put my hand on the bedroom door to open it and go back in and my son was in the room on the other side and slammed the door shut on my fingers. He didn't know I was on the other side and he feels terrible about it. He slammed the door because all the rain had swollen the wood. I will never again touch a door unless it's the doorknob.

I met a Plymouth Brethren at an Ex-JW Meetup. He was there to find out how to convert his wife from JW to PB. What a disaster that meetup was. You should have heard him talk....the pot calling the kettle black. I just never have any luck with meetups. I would go into more detail but I can't type. I accidentally amputated two of my fingertips on a door. My ring finger and my middle finger. I am miserable trying to hunt and peck. I typed 85 wpms easy at the law firm where I work so this is definitely killing me. Took so long to type this it gave me a headache.

Things that made you cringe at "the meetings"
by i_drank_the_wine ini always cringed so hard when a "brother" or "sister" would make some overly heartfelt comment about jehovah-something, usually related to a personal experience of theirs, and get all teared up and/or start crying.. once this fringe dude that's been df'd twice now was giving a talk and kept having these long awkward pauses where he looked like he was real stressed out, then he would start up again, stutter, slip up, and repeat the process until he looked down and went "i, i just can't do this" and walked off the stage and left the hall.. it also made my spchincter pucker when a young person would give some super devotional comment on how much they love big j and whatnot, which would make the congregation all smile in their hearts and wag their heads in approval..

Did YOU Actually Believe That You Would Never Die?
by minimus ineven though i was raised a witness, i was never convinced that the end would be in 1975 or even in my lifetime..

Yes I did but there was always the uncertainty that I wouldn't make it past the big A.

An update on my situation
by Iseenow inif you guys remember, a few months ago i made a thread stating that thanks to this board, other websites, and a tiny bit of my own thinking, i had started having serious and substantial doubts on the organisation.
well, since then, i am no longer an unbaptized publisher after many *shrugs* conversations with elders.
also, my brother and mum are having doubts- apparently the method is constant attacking of the borg with evidence ( although my mum did have to listen.
