I love questions, except when people try to 'axe' me one. I would love to correct them, but besides that being rude, they might feel as if they were being sworn at; as in "please feel free to ass-k me anything".

Merry Magdalene, It is interesting that the Qur’an used by the gentleman from Minnesota belonged to Thomas Jefferson. I can understand why any pol would want to capitalize on Jefferson's fame. But does Mr. Ellison have any idea of what Jefferson's thoughts on Islam were?
Scholar Hugh Fitzgerald writes of the particular translation Jefferson possessed:
And that version of the Qur’an that Jefferson possessed, and that Ellison presumes to appropriate for his own religio-political purposes? Its author, George Sales, translated the Qur'an in 1734 so that his Protestant readership, in learning more about its contents, could "attack the Koran with success" and Sales maintained that it would be Protestants to whom, within Christianity, would fall the task of checking Islam: "for them [the Protestants]...Providence has reserved the glory of its overthrow."
Oh, and among the books in Jefferson’s library was another -- Humphrey Prideaux's 1697 work on Muhammad, "The True Nature of the Imposture Displayed."
Jefferson had a stake in understanding Islam; while US Ambassador to Britain it was his job to negotiate release of a captured ship and crew held hostage by Morocco. The Moslem countries on the North Coast of Africa were sponsors of rampant piracy in the Mediterranean, and were seizing ships and demanding tribute of the US for safe passage. Through his study of Islam, Jefferson realized that negotiation was useless, and during his presidency was unwilling to pay the demanded tribute. This lead to the Barbary Wars of 1801-1805 (and gives the Marine Corps. Hymn the reference 'to the shores of Tripoli').For more on the Barbary War: http://illustratedpig.blogspot.com/2007/01/america-where-are-you-now.html
Besides being a devout cultist wanting to advertise, I doubt Ellison could have any use for Jefferson's personal copy of the Qur'an other than to confer what he feels is an air of legitimacy upon the doctrine of Islamic hegemony contained therein.

This is so huge.
by La Capra inwhen i was four, i believed that my life could be painfully and tortuously taken from me, in a ball of flame, crashing down from the heavens, just while i sitting down to a bowl of oatmeal in the morning.. when i was nine, i believed that my life, as i then knew it, would be drastically altered, that i would be tortured for being a jw, and after suffering for who knows how long, i would die (because i still hadn't lived up to jehovah's expectations).. when i was 13, i wanted to be a nuclear physicist-because it sounded cool, but in the meantime i believed that i would die in armageddon because i wanted to go to college, get really educated, and have a great, "worldly" life.. when i was 15, i felt guilty that i hoped armageddon would never come, because i so desperately wanted to go to college.. when i was 17, i was offered an honors early admissions in a prestigious program in a highly regarded engineering program.
my mother flat out said, "no!".
when i was 18, i scuttled semi-secretly to the local university, part-time, trying to hide my daily activities without actually lying to anyone.. when i was 19 i quit pretending and disassociated.

Borderline Personality Disorder

I was raised by a BPD mom, only I didn't realize it at the time. It took me 43 years of hard living and a year of research to figure it out. She did admit last year that she was diagnosed with it, after I had suspicioned that was the issue. There are many here who write about their mothers, and I wonder if they don't have a cult induced case of it.
An excellent book on the subject is Understanding The Borderline Mother by Christine Lawson. She details the experience of living with a borderline, and the four modes this illness takes; Hermit, Witch, Waif and Queen.

The true meaning and idea of Islam is Peace and the making of Peace.
Easyshi, if only that were so! The word Islam is from the root saalem, meaning peace, but Islam actually means submission. In a round about way, it means the peace that comes from submission. The problem with Islam is not that it is a 'foreign' religion, but that it seeks to impose it's dictates in any country it's adherents establish a foothold. From it's beginning Mohammed's goal was conquest by death if necessary. Today, we see Muslims in Europe, Africa and Asia reverting to 'old school' Islam, as the Prophet intended. 'Peaceful' Muslims in the West are seeking to further Islam via changing laws and seeking special accomodations to protect their lifestyle at the expense of others, rather than assimilate to their new (or existing) homelands.
I have no beef with you personally. You sound like a 'moderate' Muslim who has trancended the violent message of Mohammed. I do agree with you that a True God can stand criticism, or at least forgive an honest doubt without any earthly hatchmen.

Yes, the 'Christian' West has had it's problems, and has been involved in many wars, although few have been committed in the name of religion. The Crusades were a defensive war against Islam's agression in Palestine. Why has the West been able to prosper and work in a spirit of co-operation?
I will give Islam this, they are getting back to the fundamentals. What is your take on sura 9.5 and 9.29? what are your views of Shari'a, and what do you make of the refusal of Muslim states to sign the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? Should the International Olympic Committee change the date of the 2012 Olympics so that Islamic athletes are not conflicted about participating in sport, or fasting during Ramadan? What you think of the hysterical attacks on all those, including the Pope, who dare to say things that are not flattering to Islam? What do you think of the Danish cartoons murder threats, the figure of Muhammad, and of little Aisha,(6 yr. old wife) and Asma bint Marwan, and the Khaybar oasis attack, and whether he agrees with other Believers that Muhamamd is indeed the Perfect Man, the man to be emulated, uswa hasana, al-insan al-kamil. No taqiyya and tu-quoque please.
You sound like an appologist for a Death Cult. Most of us here have had our fill with them.

Since it's inception, Islam has offered kaffir's the opportunity to convert, pay jizya and live a second class existance as a dhimmi, or die at the point of a sword. Oh yeah, they practive taquiah (theocratic warfare). What a wonderful culture!
