I wear short or shorter skirts now. (Nothing really outrageous just more comfortable lengths like kneelength or a little shorter).
I went through my closet and got rid of practically everything long and dowdy . To think, I wore dowdy uncomfortable clothing so other people could feel good? I only kept a few long ones that were more stylish. I also do some of the things that Undercover mentions except for the cigars and strip clubs ha, ha.

Who here gives to the homeless?
by JW83 ini'm interested in how many here give to the homeless, or any kind of charity, since that was not a part of the witness experience.
i have to admit that my heart is hard ...

Dear SushiCrow:
I am sorry I offended you personally. I do realize that depression is also a mental illness and I have suffered from it myself at some point in time.
I know you feel that institutions are horrible places and I tend to agree. However, here in NYC there have been some very DANGEROUS characters who have seriously hurt people. They DO NOT belong out in public where they can hurt people! The greater good to the public demands that they not be around anybody.
I do, however, stand by my statement about not giving money to homeless because I am NOT supporting the vice of some drug addict or scam artist. If somebody feels good about giving money to them that is their right. There are exceptions to my rule and I will help a traveler in distress or some person who lost their wallet, etc.
I also give tons of clothing to charitable institutions.

ANOTHER MURDERED PREGNANT WOMAN......
by Mary inthere's been yet another arrest of a man who's being charged with murdering his pregnant girlfriend in pennsylvania.........is it just me, or does there seem to be a sharp increase in the number of guys who are murdering their pregnant wives/girlfriends these days?
i often think of scott peterson.....if the idiot didn't want kids that badly, why didn't he get a vesectomy?
your thoughts?

With regard to that pregnant woman several years ago who had the baby cut from her by somebody who pretended to be interested in buying her car:
I always wondered if the fact that she was a dub (and probably seen in the neighborhood witnessing at some point) made her a target to this depraved woman who did this to her. I also wonder if the fact that she was a dub made HER let her guard down with people in general. Because both of them are dead we will never really know the answer. -

I do not believe in giving money to "homeless" people. I have several times in the past but no more.
Many years ago when a token was 90 cents I was walking down 5th and looking in a window when I was approached from behind by a soft spoken young man with a British accent carrying a duffel bag. He asked me if I had 90 cents or a token to give him. He looked like a traveler in distress so I gave it to him. A year or so later I was looking in the exact same window when I heard the same voice ask me the same question. I turned in surprise and said to him: "you already got me once already, why don't you go get a job". He said to me, "well fuck you..." and walked away.
I have a problem with the term homeless. As far as I am concerned, the term homeless means somebody whose house burned down or who suffered some emergency. The term now has come to encompass drug addicts, mentally ill (who belong in institutions) plus a few others. (Have any of you had to run from a mentally deranged homeless person? Well, I have).
When I was growing up, most of the "homeless" would be called bums! What particularly bothers me is that most of these drug addicts are products of the welfare system and social programs that turned into a nightmare. My taxes paid for this!!
I am not supporting or contributing to anybody's vice!!! -

I don't know you but you sound adorable! We are all grateful for this board as a place to come to in order to get things off our chest that we were forced to hold in for years. The idea that they tried to silence us just makes me furious. -

Why do some brothers quit Pioneering shortly after they get married?
by truthseeker ini've noticed this in our congregation, that a lot of brothers who start of pioneering in their mid to late teens, stop shortly after they get married.
maybe they think it's a sister thing.. also, a lot of the friends in the hall who have been to pioneer school, are no longer pioneers.
this seems to be more for the younger jw's, than the older, retired jw's who have nothing else to do.. has this been your experience?

It has been my observation that the first year of marriage is very trying and stressful - for anybody. I know of some whose first year together was absolute hell - and you could see it on her face! Two personalities having to adjust to each other is not easy - no matter how "spiritual" or "in love" they were before.

Mental illness among JWs: cause or effect?
by kid-A inthere is compelling, published evidence (see link below) to suggest higher rates of mental illness among jws compared to other religious sects, and the general population.
what is your opinion, is this because people with "susceptibility" to mental illness are more likely to be attracted to the lifestyle and psychology of the wts, or after joining and being an active member for years, the jw psychology and lifestyle are simply enough to push any psychologically healthy individual into psychopathology?

Some years back when I was active I told my life story to a man I worked for. He said he saw a similarity between my story and a man that he knew who was also a dub. He theorized that we both came from troubled backgrounds so THEREFORE we were attracted to this religion. Well, I was highly insulted! I tried to rationalize it by telling myself that people who were content with life and the world would never look for religion. I felt that my reasons had more to do with my view of the world as opposed to my home life. Whether this is true or not I do not know.
What I do feel now is that some people that are inside were borderline when they came in. If you couple this fact with the severity of the teachings and the constant nagging that you should be doing more plus the stressing how "sinful" we are (this used to really make me mad), plus guilt, guilt, guilt, it is possible this could send certain individuals over the edge. -

Did you have to go outside the Hall to talk about business?
by truthseeker insuppose you needed a form signed by a brother in the hall, or you had to give someone money for a product.
did you do this inside the hall or outside?.
my friend once ordered some mary kay products for a sister.

Yes, they did not want business conducted in the hall. The reason is that things got out of hand in the 1980s. There were so many people working for and with each other that "business" was all they talked about. So, as a result it was forbidden to talk about such things in the hall and the bulletin board could never be used for these purposes either. It was just for "spiritual things".
They didn't even want you handing out stacks of greeting cards or invitations. -

My sister sent me a copy of J. Castro's article in NY Times
by LongHairGal inmy sis just sent me a copy of the article which appeared in the ny times magazine about this ex-witness.
she was shocked because it spells out all the things i told her about.
i am sure they are not happy about publicity like this - especially when it makes its way into a paper with so wide a distribution as this!

No, I don't have it with me. It is home in an envelope. She cut it out of the paper so I don't have it online.
But I am sure some poster must have it. -
