here's my list of jw no-no's as i recall: .

1. no giving or accepting valentine candy for students.

2. no going to home coming football games.

I agree that these things are ridiculous and over the line.. But, I have to say: most of the problem is because Witnesses cannot keep their mouths shut, in my opinion.

They blab their business to everybody (not wise) and go up to elders (who are nobody) and ask their opinion and/or ‘confess’ to them about their bedroom practices and what goes on between a husband and wife!!! This is absurd and just goes to show that being in this religion makes intelligent people take leave of their senses and breaks down the boundaries that normal people should have. They have no backbone anymore and have truly checked their brains at the door. Sorry to have to say this.

Most of the things on the lists mentioned come under the ‘None of your goddamned Business’ category.. Again, I’m Glad I’m not there anymore to have to fend off this sickening nonsense as well as other garbage.

It would be nice to believe that when 1975 came and went without a whisper..that most intelligent people would have walked away from the Witness religion.

This is regardless of whether or not they made crazy decisions like selling their houses, etc. This ‘event’ or non-event should have told them right then and there that it’s all a crock of shit.. They should have reacted the way I DID when I heard the 1995 Generation teaching: I planned my ‘Fade’. I was DONE with it and have been Out many years.

I’m sure most of the people who sold everything back then probably never totally recovered. If they were young, maybe.. But, if they walked away from the awful religion at least they would have been free of mind games and manipulation and lived out the rest of their lives as normal human beings.

I may not have been in pre-1975 to hear the ‘spiritually weak’ remarks that I’m sure everybody who didn’t jump on the bandwagon heard. (If you ask me, those remarks are really about ‘misery loves company’.) But, I heard those idiot remarks years later when I came in and refused to quit my full-time job!.. That’s precisely why I’d tell people there asking for money NOW to ‘pound sand’ as your father so nicely put it.

I also heard the remark about ‘putting too much stock in 1975’ over the years by some older JWs. Very much denial.

The problem with the religion’s 1975 fiasco is they try to hide this from newer people that come into the JW religion. I certainly would have had second thoughts if I knew about this.

When I came in several years after that - not a word was said about it. I only heard about it in a car group when a derogatory remark was made about someone who no longer came.

With regard to selling houses, quitting jobs prematurely and other stupidity, this has been repeated in the recent decade+ by clueless Witnesses who may not have been aware of what happened pre-1975.. Now you have yet MORE people in congregations who are looking for handouts.

How About.....YOU Doing the Shunning?

how many of the readers here on the site have been or are now being shunned by friends/relatives?

well, let's turn that around a little bit: how many of the readers here have purposely shunned a witness, when they encountered them?

I don’t know if this is so much about YOU shunning a Witness…OR avoiding the awkward situation when this person finally saw you. Maybe you were making sure HE didn’t have the satisfaction (if you want to call it that) of shunning you. Maybe it would be true shunning if you thought to yourself: ‘oh that’s brother so and so who is disfellowshipped so I have to make it a point to ignore him’.🙄

I’m a long time ‘Fader’ and I don’t believe in going out of my way to avoid JWs in stores. At this point after so many years we might not even recognize each other. The only people I avoid are crazies or if I sense trouble.

New rules for inactive ones?

have the rules changed as far as disfellowshipping inactive ones when it's clear they are engaged in "wrongdoing?".

i have a cousin in seattle who was disfellowshipped about 3 years ago or so and then went through the process of being reinstated (took only 6 months) and then proceeded to fade and do nothing regarding the jw's .

fast forward to today and now she's had a baby out of wedlock and the uber jw elder father and mother are all on board somehow.

Unfortunately, money is the attraction, as always. You and your family must look like a ‘dynasty’ to them!.. If you were a poor, broke slob they’d never be pursuing you. They also would never pursue a single woman they’d never so much as get the time of day from.

Then, some guy shows an unwelcome interest in your sister. I guess he hoped to marry into a family where there is money 🤣. Too many people would want to do that, sadly.

HELLOTHERE:

Maybe some elders are calling it quits because they can’t bring themselves to stick their noses into people’s lives. The religion is much too intrusive and has waay overstepped their boundaries. I would never tolerate this and this is one of the main reasons I’m Glad I left ages ago.

Thanks. I credit the 1995 Generation teaching for opening my eyes and getting me out.

Before this, I made excuses to myself for the many things wrong and was optimistic that things would get better. What a fool. I’m just SO grateful now that I never caved in to peer pressure to quit that job I had!.. Believe me, nobody would be taking up any collection for ME like the overseer mentioned in Rules & Regulations’ post above!

As far as the examples you gave: I can see No. 1 where certain people there will not relate or understand detrimental effects of the religion to anybody else! They have cushy lives and a great situation. No money problems. Life is good. Multigenerational Witnesses with a great safety net of relatives, etc. Also, some came into the religion after they earned their pensions and doing well and forgot what it’s like to struggle. By the way, all the older people I saw were earning their pensions. They obviously were in the workforce but yet some hypocrites knocked ME for my full time job.. Go figure.

I can see some fall into the 2 and 3 category. I also laugh at the mentality that somebody would have to pry the magazine out of their cold, dead hands! 🤣 Who’s trying? They can have it.

I think many stay because of the sunk cost fallacy. They stayed at the party too long and now they’re stuck and don’t want to start over. They may also fall into Category No. 1. Life is good so they stay put.

I can’t speak for anybody else but I had to do what I felt was right for me.

I always hated when they tried to make a comparison between something from bible times and the present. In this case, they are trying to get people to view something unpleasant they are doing in a positive light 🤮.

All these people who got kicked to the curb are ending up in congregations to join all the other unprepared and needy individuals living on the edge. Too many all in one place. What most have in common is: being told they didn’t need a well-paying job or pension because ‘Armageddon was coming’.. Problem is they reached retirement age first.. The ones who got kicked to the curb helped print articles saying just that!..How silly is that?

I might have mentioned to you in another thread that it’s very charitable of your brother and other elders to give a$$istance to these COs who lost their position.

Articles like this are just a reminder to me that congregations of JWs with all the ‘needy’ who never wanted to work are No place that I would want to be! ..I’m not Out because of this but it just adds another reason to stay away!

Yes, and that’s that. It’s good your wife told that irresponsible sister she needs to manage her money better. But, I’m sure the advice went in one ear and out the other.

These people actually believe they are going to be asking everybody for money every step of the way. But, there’s that pesky fact that keeps popping up: they criticized responsible people for working at a decent job. That disqualifies them, in my opinion, for asking for money.

I also don’t want anybody telling me it’s a ‘brotherhood’. Well, they couldn’t have been my brothers and I certainly couldn’t have been their ‘sister’ years ago when I was treated like an outcast because I refused to quit my full time job and take up housecleaning and pioneering.. Luckily, I had friends outside (which they hated).

When I started my ‘Fade’ years later I made sure I rekindled all those friendships!

Good you are active for your age. I am many years out with a few single women JW friends I occasionally keep in touch with. One gets financial help from non-JW relatives. They imagine they can entice me back. They can’t. I explained to them what I would face with regard to being asked for money and what my response would be.

From what I have heard, the ‘needy’ don’t actively or obviously look for handouts nor would the congregations offer it. They would be discouraged from asking because it’s bad ‘optics’.

Everything is done privately or quietly- unless it’s like the woman who came up to me. Otherwise, elders do it on their behalf. 🙄 When I was ‘in’ elders would privately approach me with an envelope. They don’t DO this in front of other people - and they know WHO to approach.

I would never presume to tell anybody else what to do. But, I’m the one who got criticized for my full-time job, and I would never forget this.. I don’t want anybody with selective memory loss coming near me asking for anything for anybody. Other people can throw their money around like confetti. That’s their business.

It is also good that you mention about local ‘wealthy’ benefactors taking care of retired COs/DOs.. I would certainly never give anything to them after they criticized responsible working people like myself.

As far as local financial predators preying on ‘retirees’ and the ‘naive’, I would be immune to them. It’s just as well I am out many years. My JW friends can hope in vain because I’d never deal with any of this!
