Being embarrassed by a JW when you were a JW

i was out on the ministry(tm) in the 1980's when i was pie-on-earring.

i was only a lowly publisher(tm) being coached by a rather odd elder(tm).. one of the publications(tm) had recently mentioned japan and the growth(tm) of jws there.. the elder(tm), brother(tm) i was with offered the magazines(tm) to the householder(tm).. then he stated, 'there are (gave the reported numbers at the time.

i can't remember the number he stated), jehovah's witnesses(tm) in japan.'.

STAN LIVEDEATH:

I was as embarrassed as you can imagine being a Witness and felt like the stupidest fool in the world in a clown suit when I was in the door to door work!

I didn’t feel right about public preaching maybe because I didn’t believe in bothering people and not entirely sure I believed of all of the teachings. As others have said, if someone said No.. I gladly turned and left.

Even though I went out in car ‘service’ groups in suburban neighborhoods and not the dangerous urban areas some on here have, I still didn’t feel entirely safe at times. Now, I see we were putting ourselves on the front lines and anything could have happened to us.

As far as it being an urgent ‘warning work’, I didn’t buy that because a real warning work should use the media. No, it’s nothing but a busy making work and a visible yardstick by which to judge the rank & file JWs. I think it’s also the ‘claim to fame’ by which the religion is recognized.

Stress of Going to a Summer Convention

spotted this picture on a friend's page, he was highlighting the mental health issue.

however,we thought the magazine on stress was deliberately placed in the summer months because for any jw going to a convention, paying high season hotel rates for themselves or their whole family to stay near the convention centre, fighting coworkers and managers to get the time off work, travelling expenses, buying their own meals for the family, buying new shiny suits and dresses to impress (particularly if you have teenage girls who are looking for their prince), and more.... by the time they come home again and straight away back to work, their nerves will be so frazzled that their stress levels will have sky rocketed!.

Regarding conventions and rank & file JWs told to attend regardless of whether they have to work to feed their families/put a roof over their heads:

What can people expect from clueless men shielded from reality and everyday life?? They are sheltered with all their needs taken care of by suckers who bust their a$$ working for a living! This is why I had no regard for anything they said back in the day. I could see their articles were written by people who knew nothing about life. They expected you to go out on a limb. Glad I never listened.

Any working Witness who decided to attend some worthless time/waster convention who then lost their job surely learned the hard way not to listen to fools. This also goes double to any Witness who quit a decent job only to regret it later.

the jws i know (which admittedly are more liberal than most) are suddenly into prepping to one degree or another.

some have simply assembled "go bags" with basic common sense supplies in case they need to bug out in the event of a natural disaster and others seem to be seriously into it, almost to the degree to which mormons are.

I think the idea of a go-bag is sensible especially if you live in an area that can have or is expecting a natural disaster. The problem though with a go-bag is that you may forget what’s in it and certain things have to be changed periodically like batteries, etc. After a while it may even be forgotten since in time people forget.. Also, nobody can maintain edge-of-your-seat anticipation for an indefinite period of time.

Some preppers feel that unless somebody has a destination that will be better than where they presently are - they will be nothing more than a glorified refugee. I also think some stupid JWs think this is going to be an Exodus.2 and miraculous things are going to occur - like the parting of the Red Sea.. Otherwise, just where the hell are they going?

I have heard of every extreme of people who get married in the JW religion: from some young guy marrying an older woman to the increasingly more prevalent older JW guy looking for a younger woman or even a teenage girl.

Yes, we all know the dating pool is shallow in the religion. There are probably twice as many women than men there which makes the most undesired man look better in the eyes of some desperate women there.. But, to me, this is like saying if there were a housing shortage a dirthole of an apartment would be desirable just because someone needs a roof.

As for the older guys (mostly sheltered born-ins) looking for an 18 year old girl: they don’t want an older woman with baggage. And never mind any woman who was not raised in the religion. She’d scare the hell out of them.

They also figure the young girl has no sexual experience which is good because they don’t have any either! So, he will get an “A” in that department since she has nothing to compare him to.

It’s all pretty screwed up there and I always felt any woman over 30 with a brain and an ounce of self-esteem has to look outside for a man.

i've been absent for a while, because i've been focusing more in helping portuguese readers know the truth about jw.

we're trying to form an association in portugal to help people abused by religious and non-religious organisations.

i've also been trying to get a little away of these issues because my life has been really complicated since i slammed the door on jw's face!.

Why does this abuse of power happen?

Just speculation and my opinion why this happens in religions and organizations.

Some adults must apparently fool themselves into believing these things would (take your pick):.. never see the light of day; victims considered under ‘subjection’ and unimportant in their eyes; it would be too embarrassing and children would be intimidated into silence and never reveal it; men should be ‘forgiven’; we are untouchable, etc., etc.

I seem to remember during the pandemic (maybe you remember as well) there were lists and that it was suggested that people who had ‘surplus’ items were asked to donate them to a communal area, or something along those lines.. I thought that was rather nervy, to say the least. Surplus? Really? And who is to determine what constitutes surplus??? Or, are people supposed to be made to feel guilty?

Yes, this is most certainly about the few wise JWs preparing and types who couldn’t be bothered expecting to benefit from other people’s planning.. Sounds exactly like when responsible working people in congregations are hit up for money to give to the ‘pious-sneers’ and others who didn’t work or save.. And my JW acquaintances wonder why I wouldn’t want to be seen in the hall nowadays or be around any of them?!

I contacted one of the JWs I know and said I heard that AMIII was no longer a GB member and asked why he was removed. The answer I got was they didn’t think he was removed but had some health issue. I let it drop.

Unless somebody very reliable knows somebody who really knows what happened, this is all going to be hushed up like it was nothing and things will continue as usual, IMO.

Again, this article looks to be about getting help for the many needy and impoverished Witnesses in the congregations. As others have said: “It’s all coming home to roost”.

These people listened to bad advice years ago when young to not get decent jobs or careers - but to be in the ministry instead. Many only had a nodding acquaintance with the workforce (part time jobs) because they were told ‘Armageddon’ would be here.. I had this same thing said to me too but thankfully I paid no attention.

Now all these people are at retirement age with no preparation and they are frantic and worried. The religion has no social programs. So, they are told to go seek help from ‘Satan’s system of things’.

i am now in my early 60’s.

i was baptized in 1980. i served as a ministerial servant and an elder.

i gave my all for many years but about eight years ago i started to question many things.

NEW DAY:

I don’t know about you, but I was not raised in the Witness religion. I came in as a young working adult.

I never saw myself as a ‘non entity’. I probably was viewed as one though back in the day because I refused to quit a full-time job to take up housecleaning/pioneering like other single women there.

No, I kept my self-esteem (that everybody should have) and never allowed anybody’s opinions to dictate how I ‘should’ view myself. I am sure this bothered some people there but they certainly weren’t looking out for my well-being and I never lost sight of this!

From your posts, it seems you got through your JW experience relatively unscathed and are a happy and content person.. You also live down-under and were able to have job/career without trouble and interference from the religion.

Here in the USA things are different. But, I am relatively happy/content even though it has been a rocky road. I was raised Catholic and had a ‘normal’ childhood, friends, etc. so, thank God I have happy memories and it was easier to ‘Fade’ from the Witnesses when the time was right. Not bragging.. but I am exceedingly thankful I never caved in to pressure from the JWs to quit my job and pioneer and am now retired.

PUNKOFNICE:

I totally agree that certain things have to be done in a timely fashion (like when a person is young enough) such as college education - in order for it to make a difference in somebody’s financial situation. Of course, an older person can still go to college for personal enrichment - but that’s not what we’re talking about here. You can also still show an interest in those other things you mentioned!

It is also an inconvenient truth that most successful people are from middle to upper class. But, that shouldn’t ever stop a talented younger person from a less affluent situation from trying. Enjoy your upcoming retirement. 👍🏻
