SweetTea:
Thank you. It is a terrible thing to wake up one day and realize what you thought you had was a lot of nothing. Because I was always on the "fringes" because I worked full time - I had a friend or two on the outside! Thank God! At least non-JWs like you for who you are and not what you profess to believe in. I know I was viewed suspiciously because I had "worldly" friends. I was told to get rid of them and I would make more friends there. What a load of bull! Yeah, I made friends - but conditional friends!!! At the time, I didn't realize the implications of this because I was caught up in a whirlwind of socializing for a decade or so. Now, I appreciate my "worldly" friends. They may not be perfect but at least I know what the hell they are about. Not so with JWs! You meet people there and don't know what you are dealing with because of the phony veneer. When you do find out it is usually a rude awakening. You may be left reeling for a long time because of a bad experience with these so-called brethren!

Bethel: Pathway to Apostasy
by Black Man inat the 'big house' you go either one of two ways, company man or apostate.
i think for many that went, it demystified the whole organization and you saw firsthand that there wasn't holy spirit influencing anything - only the muses of sheltered, out-of-touch old men and political bureaucrats.
i work in the corporate world and i saw just as much if not more politics in bethel.

Upside/Down:
I know what you mean about being told to sugar-coat things for the sake of "weaker brothers". In my cong. we had certain older (pioneer) sisters who would sugar coat things to the young-uns and talk privately among themselves about the real deal. One such phony slipped in front of me with a remark I wasn't supposed to hear and promptly changed the subject.

the real purpose of field service
by what_Truth? ini've been racking this around my brain for a minute now.
you've got people puttin in an average of 10 hours a month, giving away countless publications, and still only converting one or two families every 20 years or so.
this raises an obvious question, "if the door to door ministry doesn't bring in converts why do it?

Since JWs differ for the sake of being different, could another reason for the purpose of field service be so that the public can see us going out? After all, the JW trademark is door to door service. If JWs no longer went out in service other religious organizations might say the JWs were quitters or something like that. Maybe this is part of it.

Brothers In Good Standing
by Englishman ini heard today that brothers who volunteered at assemblies were only accepted on the proviso that they were "brothers in good standing".
i also heard that anyone reproved or df'd might have to wait for 3 to 5 years before being allowed to clean the gent's loos as a volunteer.. is that right?
what other things are held back from folk who aren't quite up to the mark?.

Thanks for the funny anecdote. That's typical of the JW urban legends. All in all, a brother NOT in good standing is better off than a sister IN good standing (at least that's how I see it).

Actually for "little Johnny" being sent home is a blessing in disguise. At least he's young enough to go back to college and make something of himself!!
Try doing that in middle age!
But the real evil here is their veil of deception in not being up-front about the real reason. They would rather somebody go slinking back home feeling awful - for the wrong reason. They really deserve to be punished. I don't care how but they should be punished.

This is just nightmarish and about as far from a spiritual paradise as you can come! What bothers me is that this is a well-kept secret from the people in the congregations because I never heard any whispers about this. Unless, of course, they only whisper it to those "higher-up" in the cong. and tell them to keep it under their hats!!! This would be typical along with all the other secrets they keep! I wonder if they would have as many applicants for Bethel if they knew what really happens there.

So, it is true that they search your stuff in Bethel. Tell me. Did they do this to couples as well as singles? I knew of Bethelites who stayed there and left. When I attempted to question one of them they wouldn't tell me exactly what was wrong - like it was some insider secret. But that would do it for me.

Thanks for your replies. I see it is evenly split. The reason I think it might have something to do with the religion is because in the first instance the woman may have left the org. In following their rules maybe she feels she can no longer associate with me. In the second instance, the woman is very status oriented and places a high value on friends who are pioneers, etc. which I am not.

This was one of the things that got to me about the bible. We are told that we must love Jehovah and that he loves us. But legalistic things like this leave me cold. How am I supposed to feel warm and fuzzy about my creator when he did things like this. Now, if I got into a discussion with a JW about this (which I did) I was told: well, after all you are created and you should be grateful for life and the pot has no right to question the potter, etc...
But even so, as a thinking and feeling person I have to come to the conclusion that he is more punitive than anything else. He may inspire my awe because of the natural beauty of the earth and life but he does not inspire my love.

In the last several years I have had JW friends do some crazy things to me which deeply disappointed me. And I might add these are people who I considered to be friends. One left her husband and just decided to cut off all contact with me. No reason. The other moved out of state and got remarried (never told me about it). I heard about this through the grapevine.
There are other lesser but just as disappointing behaviors on the part of certain other people. Now, this is not to say that non-JWs could not do the same thing. But I do believe the corny beliefs of the religion are in some way to blame for these instances.
