UpsideDown:
Funny what you said about them looking for a situation in which they might be portrayed as martyrs. It reminds me of the 1970s (in the era of the Billy Jack movies) when everybody who had a drop of American Indian ancestry was looking to feel like a martyr over the smallest thing. It got to be ridiculous.

It has been my observation that they would breach a confidentiality and cause a problem for their employer. How could you expect otherwise?
I wonder if a law were to be passed in which a religious organization could be sued over this if their stance would change.

This does not surprise me but it makes me angry.
In a way it is similar to the anecdotal stories of them "helping" people at ground zero. (I know of someone who went to ground zero to deliver supplies and he was told to unload and then LEAVE - so who do you think I believe?)
Stories like this only confirm to me that money should only be given to "worldly" charities like Red Cross.
Otherwise, only a small part will go to help Katrina victims and of that part only to JWs in "good standing" as I suspected all along! -

WTS: Positive information is believed, Negative is not believed
by Elsewhere ini find it very interesting the way the wts has conditioned jws to automatically accept as true any information about jws that is considered "positive" regarding the religion while also automatically concluding as false any information about jws that is considered "negative".. i wonder if we could use this to our advantage... tell jws all sorts of outlandish, but positive, things about the organization and what jws are doing.
eventually they will get to a point where they realize that they cannot even trust the "good" things they hear.
hey, did you hear about how the wts recently purchased a c-130 so they can do literature airdrops in remote locations in third-world countries?

You are correct when you say they cannot stand negative talk of any kind. In fact, if you are a "negative" (i.e. realistic) person, you can expect to have somebody pull you aside and criticise you for it. I was perceived to be so negative that once when I gave a "good" (i.e. upbuilding) comment at a Thursday night meeting the elder came to me at the end of the meeting and commended me on how I wasn't negative. These people need positive feedback because their belief system is so precarious that anything will knock it off balance.
This hatred of things negative is not just about information pertaining to the religion in general but also in how some of these people live their daily lives. Some of them just cannot deal with reality at all. They live in a bubble or controlled environment and god forbid you burst their bubble with a fact or two (about anything really - even the headlines) they will cry out in pain. -

JW funerals getting more personable??
by Alana ini went to a jw funeral wednesday.
it was for the dad of two good jw friends (at least back in the days) of mine.
he was one of the nicest men ive ever known.

It isn't your imagination. They ARE somewhat more personable these days.
Maybe I am wrong but I think maybe they got such bad press because of their coldness about death that they are trying to change everybody's opinion of them. They also realize they sound like "Scrooge" because of their attitude toward Christmas, etc. so they want to show how human they are.
They also know that funerals are gathering place of worldly relatives who they have a chance to "make a good impression on", so they are treating this delicately, possibly. When you think about it, they are giving a public talk to worldly people who wouldn't otherwise listen to them. -

Did you ever give blood?
by JH indid you ever give blood, if so, how often and how does it feel?
does it hurt?
-
LongHairGal
Yes I did once many years ago. The company I worked for had a blood drive and I did it (I was curious to find out my blood type). They said you had to be at least 110 lbs. At the time I just made it.
I thought the experience was awful. That thing in your arm was uncomfortable and unnatural feeling. You feel as if you want to rip it out. My blood pressure was low so I was told I had to keep squeezing that thing in my fist to make the blood come out faster. It seemed to take forever. When it was done I was given some orange juice and some sugar wafers. All of a sudden everything got fuzzy and I got faint. Somebody put me in a wheelchair and the dirty old man/janitor/handyman of the company picked me up under my arms (while he grabbed my breasts - but I was in no position to complain), put me in the wheelchair and wheeled me to the nurses office. I was put in a bed for several hours till I didn't feel faint anymore. When the nurse released me to go back to my office, she told me if I felt faint I should put my head between my knees.
I never did complain about the dirty old man who took advantage of the situation but maybe I should have. -

Are you honest when you say your age?
by JH ini know people who don't say their real age, like take off 2 or 3 years.... my mom looks younger than her age, so she sometimes took off a few years.
gee, i'm just the opposite, i rather say my real age, and wait for a compliment saying "hey you look good for your age".
how about you, do you ever lie on your age?
-
LongHairGal
I have noticed some here say that women who come out of WT look younger. I have noticed that too. I feel it is because they don't have the "hard" look that so many women in the "world" have - what with being "protected" and living in a bubble. (I'm glad there is some benefit to having been there). They don't have the raspy cigarette or bar-room voice that some "worldly" women have and they may "seem" more feminine - which does make one appear younger.
Hell, I'll take any benefit I can.

IQ Test, Have you ever taken one ?
by oldflame inthere are many online iq test to take, i did one and zoomed through it without trying very hard and got a 128. whats yours ?
be honest
-
LongHairGal
IQ tests are best given to young children - like in first grade which I think I got. Then you will get the most accurate results which are not tinged by social biases or answering in a way you THINK a question should be answered, etc.
Now, I think I would probably score lower. I am sure I have fewer brain cells than I did when I was a kid. -

Ours had vandalism where they would run over the lawn and if a new sidewalk were put in brothers would have to watch it until it dried so that neighborhood people wouldn't write things in the cement.
On the subject of a hall being held up: while I don't know of one personally I do not go to the hall with much jewelry on just in case somebody came in. Although, isn't that what the big "bouncer" brothers in the back of the hall are for, to protect us? In this day and age, I feel that people in any public meeting group can be targeted by some brazen person that decides to come in. So that goes for other types of meetings held in church basements, etc. like Al Anon or other such things.
I don't trust anybody today. -

You are so right about their attitude that you should "fall on your sword", etc. Not for them I wont!
While I do realize that we are all on our own essentially with regard to salvation in general, the WT wants to have it both ways. They want you to feel that you are part of a "brotherhood" obviously because THEY benefit from this false belief in the sense that you might contribute money and give help, etc.
But, let something go wrong and you are cut loose literally.
Since this is so wrong and so very un-Christlike I cannot help but feel that they and any other organization is unnecessary and undesirable.
