my grandmother, an immigrant from austria, was.

two of my aunts, their husbands, both elders, various cousins and two of my sisters are witnesses.

so is my grand uncle.

So, you have seen from the responses on here that it is common. Behavior towards elderly JWs can range from just plain neglect and ignoring them to out and out exploitation and fraud. Some ‘brotherhood’!

You probably know that the Witness religion has NO social programs whatsoever to help anybody. So, there is no ‘department’ for caring for the elderly, etc. What ends up happening is that the elders privately ‘corner’ individual people with an envelope asking for money!.. Doesn’t matter to them that said person was criticized for having a full-time job!.. I could go on…

What EXBETHELITENOWPIMA said above is a common fallacy and delusional thinking.

The JW religion is full of fallacies and urban legends. NO JW has any business believing that somebody else in the congregation is responsible for caring for their elderly parent(s).. (Looking in on somebody to say ‘hello’ is one thing: ‘caring’ for them is something else!)… Even if it is an unpleasant task, everybody has the responsibility to at least see their OWN parent(s) situated. It does not become some strangers’ (who have their own obligations) responsibility.

Yes, it’s a chaotic mess.

You mention you befriended her on FB and then had issues over ‘TDS’ and the friendship with her was over. I had the same thing happen to me with a couple of people I had to unfriend. It’s a pity really.

the cheek of it.. so the direction was always don’t go for advanced education and careers but now they are looking for such ones to give if their time and education for free?.

When 9/11 happened I was in the very early stages of my ‘Fade’ from the religion.

This event did not shake my resolve in the slightest! I was determined to get Out. I did, however, see some faces of scared people who came running back! I remember a particular woman who sat in the front on the side who kept swiveling her head to look at everyone as if to say ‘hey I came back because of….’

As for others who ‘go fleeing back time and again and years go clocking by until they’re old and poor’: .. I don’t doubt this foolishness has happened.

Anybody ‘in and out’ so much has to know how the world works. I cannot feel sorry for anybody who preferred to be lulled to sleep by the religion instead of providing for themselves with a decent job.

I remember a deadbeat guy there going on about how people had to ‘share’. I mentioned this to a friend and she said: “What does he have to share?” Answer: Nothing.

But, the fact was that I was criticized for working! There were people who shunned me. So, where the hell does anybody get off imagining they should be asking me for anything??? I was telling this to an old friend on one of those long calls you have when you haven’t spoken for a long time. She was a ‘soft touch’ married sister with a problem saying ‘No’, who gave too much in favors and possessions to Users and grifters in the religion.. What is it with this religion that gets people to part with their possessions? Anyway, she’s also Out. What a number they did on her head.

Our situations were different. I was single who got knocked for working. I was nowhere near as soft touch as she was.. If I were there NOW I would be pestered and have to tell people off. There are too many people in the JW religion ‘needy’ by their own fault..

Not my problem they believed BS that they didn’t need to prepare for retirement because ‘Armageddon’ was coming to save them - plus the saying that ‘Jehovah will provide’ which has turned many a JW into deadbeats who don’t even try, instead believing ‘magic’ thinking that money will somehow fall from heaven.

If I had caved in and listened to the BS, I wouldn’t have retired. Nobody there would be supporting me.

I looked at that application and agree that almost all of the questions are far too intrusive (in addition to asking for somebody’s SS number) and definitely fall into the none-of-your-business category.😮 You’ve got to be kidding!

And just think that this will be entered into a computer database.. One thing that bothers me is that said applicant (with all their education and skills) is being ‘evaluated’ by somebody who can’t even come close! Somebody would have to be super PIMI and under a spell to furnish anybody with this information!!!

A while back I explained to one of the JWs who I keep in touch with that I’m not interested in coming back to the religion and have no intention of giving personal information or $ to anybody.. While I realize the average ‘publisher’ is not asked to fill out something as ridiculous as this, they have been asked to provide some info.

As far as I was ever concerned, the only thing they could ask for was my address and phone number. This is outrageous.

Disfellowshipped, Seeking Reinstatement

do disfellowshipped ones who want to be reinstated still have to sit up the back of the kingdom hall, away from everyone else, not allowed to speak to anyone?.

when did you realise that it wasn't worth it and finally decided to stop playing the game?.

I have been out for years. Nobody in the congregation is supposed to speak to a disfellowshipped person, so I do not recall a disfellowshipped person going out in the ministry.

As far as whether a reinstated person holds the same ‘esteem’ held before: generally I would say it depends. I would say No at least for the first year for people to warm up to them. If it’s somebody’s family member in some elder’s extended family - it might be like nothing much happened at all.. Whereas somebody else in the hall could still be shunned to some degree even after being reinstated.

Unfortunately, this is a cult-like religion with class distinctions that shouldn’t exist in the first place - so therefore some people are viewed better than others. I’m a ‘Fader’and was never even disfellowshipped but I swear that some people from certain families were viewed better.. My ‘sin’ was that I worked and didn’t pioneer.🤷🏻‍♀️

When you ask if a formerly DF’d person could rise to ‘greater heights’, I’m assuming you mean can they be an elder. I can’t say for certain but if many many years passed and the person is an older person - I suppose it might not matter if they were DF’d and reinstated as a teenager.

I wouldn’t stay married to that controlling SOB. So I definitely would not have been marriage material in the JW religion.🤣 A guy like that would probably be controlling no matter what religion it was.

That was some spooky movie! I can still hear ‘Grady’ saying those things to ‘Torrance’ and trilling those ‘r’s. When he said ‘corrected’ he actually killed his family! 😮 And the poor ‘Jack Torrance’ character got possessed by that guy’s spirit.

I saw the hypocrisy early on.. They had the audacity to criticize me for a full-time job when all the older people were collecting their pensions!

I was always under the microscope being scrutinized and judged for clothing or whatever.. I also had pioneers scoff at me because I didn’t follow in their footsteps.

Because of this whole ‘institution wide’ condemnation of a working woman like myself, I made SURE my answer was always No to any request of any sort. I did not do any favors for anybody there (like other single women did), nor did I give any handout$ to the pioneers there who didn’t want to work.. (I might have taken somebody to lunch once in a while if they were my friend - but that’s it.) I stayed on the ‘fringes’ until my ‘Fade’ after the 1995 Generation teaching told me it was Over.

I’m sure the Users and opportunists there didn’t like this, but that’s the consequence of faulty teachings and engendering hateful class distinctions in the congregations. This is a worthless religion.

Hell could freeze over before the religion tells ‘career JWs’ to provide for themselves like Paul… Then they’d have to apologize to the countless JWs who didn’t and are now needy.. Plus, they’d also have to apologize to people (like me) who got knocked for working. I think they would rather die than apologize for anything.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH:

It would not surprise me either to hear the religion actually comes out and starts tithing. I wonder how that would go over with anybody still left in this religion!

According to that article, I suppose I wasn’t ‘marriage material’ back in the day. Maybe never was.🤣 Not that there were many attractive eligible men in the ‘truth’.. All the good ones were taken.. But, that’s besides the point: I wasn’t raised in the religion, I wasn’t a pioneer and I worked!

Even if I excelled at practical knowledge and managing money, they wouldn’t have considered me ‘theocratic’ enough because I’m too ‘independent’.👍🏻 Please note that I consider these expressions to be hilarious.. When I hear the term ‘Mature Christian’ I want to barf.

Anyway, it was just interesting to look back at the past.
