  I came into the JW religion after 1975.

  The only whisper I heard about it was that ‘some left because they were serving for a date’…I was young and nobody told me about all the fanfare and buildup before: people selling homes and quitting jobs. In fact, I never learned all these other details until I left the religion years later!

  You say all the ‘old timers who pushed the hysteria of ‘75 are all dead’. Yes, they are not even around to help anybody they misled…Isn’t that usually the case? When I was young in the JWs all the older people were pushing poverty sticking their noses into my business.. Well, those judgmental busybodies went to their graves after living a cushy life. Thank God, I never listened to anything they said.

  The moral of the story out of ALL of this is: live your life and wisely work and plan for your future. Never believe anybody who tells you to pursue poverty because the ‘End’ is coming and not to ‘worry’ about anything. You’d have to be crazy.. In my observation, the poverty they were pushing was certainly not for them, just some young gullible person.

  Not only did the religion never apologize for 1975, they hid this failure so thoroughly that younger Witnesses hardly knew anything about it.

  The result of this secrecy was that decades later (90s?) some Witnesses made similar stupid mistakes again like quitting jobs before their actual retirement age and going where the ‘need was great’ thinking the End could only be just a few years away..

  Problem was their money ran out but Armageddon hadn’t come to save them.😮 So, these JWs had a problem and were unprepared and needed to seek work at or near retirement age!.. Not a good situation to be in and one that could have been avoided if other older Witnesses were honest enough to warn them about what happened before 1975!..

  I saw years ago that an unsuspecting person could be very damaged in this fear-based religion because other people will not speak up or warn! Too bad.

  Yes, looking back in retrospect the Witness religion is a very BAD joke, sorry to say!

  Even though I never faced the blood issue when I was there - the joke would have been on me if I had listened to other things….Sorry for others who believed the hype and made the mistake of literally planning their lives around this religion...👎 No good.

  So now the religion is backtracking on this?!.. Sounds like it. All this in the name of looking good in the eyes of authorities and getting funding.

  I know of at least two ex-JWs who took blood to save the lives of their infants. They are eternally grateful that they made this decision!!.. I never had children and never faced this dilemma - but I could never have lived with myself if hadn’t taken blood to save the child! Sorry for anybody who listened to this!

  As far as the religion saying: ‘we never told them what to do..’. Similar language was used on some people who pioneered for decades and never worked much and who are complaining they ended up broke.

  With all this backtracking on serious life-altering issues like this that have profoundly affected countless lives - I cannot imagine what those older PIMIs in the congregations must be thinking about all this - and how they could even stay there. Glad I got out ages ago.

  so this is from the brand new watchtower study edition of june 2025 which has just been posted on jw.org .under the title: modestly accept what you do not know, a let’s read paragraphs in question 4 &5: “read matthew 24:36. we do not know when the end of this system of things will come.

  even jesus, while on earth, did not know the ‘day and hour.’ he later told the apostles that jehovah, who is the great timekeeper, keeps the timing of certain events ‘in his own jurisdiction,’ or authority.

  I agree with your post very much.

  The religion has strung along generations of people for a lifetime with arrogant claims of ‘dates and times’.. The tragedy is that the people in the religion who made these claims have gone to their graves after living a cushy life - meanwhile those gullible individuals who based their whole lives on this are left holding the bag!

  Like you, I never believed the ‘it’s just around the corner’ hype and held onto my job. I also was raised Catholic and had my father’s wisdom. Even though I’m long ‘Faded’ from the JWs I will never forget how badly I was viewed because I wouldn’t follow absurd advice.

  Let the religion keep doubling down on their message. Makes no difference to me since I am long Out.. In my opinion, it is to placate the older Witnesses there who gave up so much for the religion and are angry the ‘new system’ isn’t here!

  the gb seems to think that the rank and file came up the years 1914, 1925, 1975, generation (70-80 years from 1914=1994), overlapping generations.

  Very good points you make and I do believe they want to keep that old R&F dumbed-down and thinking they are ‘immodest’ for even wanting answers.

  I also think articles like this are put out in response to all the complaints the religion is getting lately from sick & tired older Witnesses who feel they should be ‘in the new system by now’ instead of this ‘old system’ where they are growing older and having to worry about money.

  The religion has to quiet everybody down by saying ‘modestly accept what you do not know’. .Meanwhile, it is they who gave all this false hope in the first place - and caused their members to be in the bad shape they are now in (arrogantly saying don’t get careers or plan for retirement which they are still saying..).. What a mess. I am so Glad I never listened to a thing they said years ago.

  there are 1/2 of the jehovah’s witnesses that there were 30 years ago in my area.

  some have left but i think that many have died and none of their kids stayed being jehovah’s witnesses.

  7 congregations have been dissolved over the years.

  Sorry to see the thread deteriorate into another Covid shot thread!🙄 Please don’t conflate REAL vaccines with the Flu shot and the clot shot (oops) I meant the COVID shot….They are not the same.

  Half the Witnesses are gone because they walked away, IMO.

  You got it pretty much right with the categories of people who still remain in the Jehovah’s Witnesses after so many others have left…But, I think with the homeschooled bit you maybe might find more of that in more rural places in the USA. But, with the rest you are exactly right.

  I’m one of the people who left after the 1995 Generation teaching. Even though I had a long list of grievances and was treated badly because I worked, this was the last straw.. I had no family in the religion holding me hostage so I just walked.. Great feeling..

  Glad to not be anywhere near this now and sorry about those who didn’t plan for their senior years. But, I’d never tolerate people trying to corner me asking for $$. Nope.👎

  locally, in northern california i have seen/heard a drop in jw and mainstream church attendance especially in person attendance.

  (exception: a new creepy local new-age charismatic/pentecostal group: "bethel church" 11,000 and growing mega church(kundalini yoga/sex combined with prosperity gospel, trumpism, guns, rock music, dancing, glitter, speaking in tongues, and faith healing).. for me this paragraph sums it up regarding jehovah's witnesses: " ...smith described organized religion to me as having become a “polluted” idea in the american mainstream, because of the publicity around sex abuse scandals and financial malfeasance in many different faiths in the ’80s and ’90s as millennials came of age.

  “the scandals violated most of the virtues believed to make religion good,” smith wrote.

  I know what you mean about churches ‘betraying their own standards’ in the hope of gaining followers. People may have stopped going because they lost interest in an increasingly secular world.

  I was raised Roman Catholic and I remember way back when they introduced folk masses in some places. I was shocked even though I was so young.. It did seem that they were betraying their own standards.. It did not appeal to me and I was not interested in holding hands with other congregants.

  NOW we see today that the Jehovah’s Witnesses are doing a similar thing to retain their members.. I don’t think it will help as people didn’t just ‘lose interest’.. They fled from an intrusive toxic environment. That’s the crucial difference.

  The Catholic Church at least didn’t try to intrude in my life - or try to get me to quit a job to pursue poverty like the Witnesses did! Thank God I never listened.. There is No forgiveness for the JWs, in my book. They deserve to have nobody there.

  GORB & ANONY MOUS:

  I cannot imagine what it would be like to be in the religion now - nor would I want to.

  The Witnesses were never able to deliver any ‘New System or New World’.. It was always somebody else, namely God, who was supposed to do this. So, if these prophecies and beliefs were wrong…well guess what? It wouldn’t be happening and said Being wouldn’t be bringing it about because He didn’t say it.

  So, the past almost century and a half of wrong predictions by the JWs was just a waste of time for countless people. The ones there now want relief from old age and lack of financial preparation (but they can thank the religion for that).

  I didn’t listen back then and they knocked me.. So, here we are now: I prepared and am content to take one day at a time like human beings should;.. they didn’t prepare and are miserable every day and wishing for everything to be over.. SO, Who has the healthier outlook??
