this is a question i've had for a long time.. according to the biblical account, adam and eve's sin was to eat fruit from the forbidden tree.. now, ordinarily, when we get caught doing something "wrong," we try to hide the "offending" member (the child tries to hide his hand that has the 'stolen' cookie; we hurriedly try to pull our pants back on when mom walks in unexpectedly while we're masturbating, etc.)..
so, if the "sin" of adam and eve was eating a forbidden fruit, then why wasn't their first impulse to hide their hands?
or to wipe off their mouths?
Yes, indeed. We all live in the fallen state of sin and death due to the choices of the 3 villains: Satan, Eve, and Adam.
so true q bert. so true. especially the snake, satan, and the woman, eve. especially villainous. adam, well... he did his best, hey?
If only the account of Genesis 2 & 3 were simply a myth after all. Then it could be the writings of "a tribal society" [an inferior culture] to that in which we live.
ah yes~! for sure! and then life would be so simple. but alas it's NOT! it's the truth, and it is a judicially interconnected book (or collection of books {from GOD [Amen]}) of over 1600 years with many holy/good words from God Jehovah. and we live, right now, in the full reality of the great and lofty sentences written in latter genesis 3. so many lofty sentences making a lofty, lofty book. awesome! marvelous! GRAND!
Alas, it is not. We live the reality of the judicial sentences handed down in the latter half of Genesis 3. The Bible is explains one part of itself with others. It is an interconnected book, despite much of it not understood by the writers, even some 1600 years from first till last. It is intricate as any of Jehovah's creations is. Yet it is understandable with correct methods. It is still not yet fully comprehensible, because some of it is a full thousand years away from fulfillment. What an awesome book, or collection of books.
and look! great minds! they think alike! all you horrible apostates calling into question the fruity spirit! Jehovah's Wrath, in His Great Day of Harmagedon, will surely tare you usunder! tetra
no way. God is a Man, and He is Great.
women caused sin in the garden and ruined it for Men!! women and snakes!
<-- Men

i asked myself this question recently.. "if god could do just one thing that would make it clear he actually exists in order to convince the world today---what would it be?".
.
how would you answer?.
"If God could do just one thing [...]"
who?

one of the most humbling things a person can do is to stand at the base of a tall (hundreds of feet) outcrop of fossil bearing sedimentary rocks, wiggle out a piece of rock, and look at the fossils...knowing that they have not seen the light of day in 350 million years (give or take a few million, lol).
ordinary concepts of time disappear with these kinds of numbers, hence geologists resort to the term "deep time.
" when you take the mental step back to try and grasp "deep time" it makes you realize how puny and insignificant the human species is.
Why not make another stone spear head and place it beside the old one? That will really mess w somebody's mind.
LOL!! some far distant-future athropoid-like anthropologist will be going "what the...?? this is HEAVY!!"

in 1996, the year he died, sagan gave a commencement address.

hey nvr!
oh, for sure, i agree. which is why i do not forsee us being able to really do it with the God concept. well, not the literal one. god as a metaphor for the divinity in ourselves might actually really help us out with our priorities back here on the blue dot. you know, as an archetype. but the literal one is not really helping us out. i would argue that it is stifling us, psychologically, actually (i mean, i think it's getting hot in here!). after all, it's just a layer that needs to be peeled off before we will understand just how small and pale this blue dot is.

thanks u_b! ain't that the truth!
i really do not forsee us being able to gather the psychological drive and strength to really try and survive, and get off the blue dot, with the God concept still strong in the minds of the majority. i really don't. i mean, why would we need it if he is gonna come make it all better for us? unless of course we get so religiously insane that we decide to take our religion to the rest of our light cone. cosmic missonaries. scary.

ps: LOL magoo. that is a great gif! :)
* we can call jesus our lord (1 cor 12:3) .
* we can discern spiritual things (1 cor.2:13, 14. compare john 7:37-39) .
* we may know we belong to god (1 john 3:24) .
interesting. i would say that all humans, regardless of religion or orientation, can partake.

Alpaca,
nice write up! we tend to throw words like "time" and "cosmos" without meditating on their vast, vast dimensions.
We have all this power to control the planet and we lack the wisdom and foresight to know what that really means.
and i would only add that, to me, "wisdom" for humans as a group is going to be in having the ability to "control the planet", and dominate nature, but choosing not to. in other words, the understanding that we are working for the planet, not her for us.

according to the jw belief, what definition/explanation were you given for the concept of "human perfection"?
what exactly would make a "perfect human" ... well... perfect?.
i remember once when i was a child, my mom told me that when i decided on my adult profession, i should make sure it's one i would be able to use in the "new system".
had similar conversations with wits and family myself. i always had a couple of ways the conversations went. some people shut me up with "well tetra, it is impossible for us to even comprehend what perfection will be like. we are so far removed from perfection. one thing is sure, it'll be great!"
another one, more along the lines of the one you described, veered into psychology. that we would never be shoved and break our arm as a result because that is not something that perfect people would do to each other. people would be ultimately compassionate. no pushing and shoving. ;)
the whole concept is funny to me. at what point did we forget that we are perfect? and in that is an irony, because in that acknowledgement we intuitively become perfect. are = become.
