Should suicidal or self destructive people have free will?
by The Dragon inbeen going through my head lately....if you try to prevent them from doing what they want...they see you as the enemy...but are you?.
if you take away their freedom to do so.....are they no longer free?
will they hate you...or thank you when they come to their senses?.

narkissos,
fascinating thoughts.
Foucault points to the 18th century as the time where the major shift occurred: "insanity" was defined against an absolute (and narrow) notion of "reason" and thus became cognitively meaningless and socially worthless.
i agree with this as well. and, paradoxically, the narrow-mindedness of the "sane" or "normal" becomes what i would argue is unhealthy psychosis in itself. the detatchment/estrangement of mind from nature seems to ensue, and deepen over time. even as a society in terms of culture, imo.
also, people seem to have forgotten the community-based roll that the shaman has played through our much longer history as humans. usually on the edge of society. not a priest or officiary. equally respected and viewed with some sucspicion by community members. but always part of the community. usually called to shamanism because of some estatic psychological experience. and indeed, with western society's general attitude toward psychedelic substances being what it is, the gap between the shaman and the community grows. the healing that could be taking place is throttled, nature is objectified as an externally meeasurable thing, and the collective cultural ego grows, and the mind becomes The Mind.
the shaman is not extinct though. just the ears of people have fallen silent. and consumerism pushes people farther away from nature. if the words are not coated in some slick marketing slime, a distant glaze falls over their eyes. "do not compute."
as the cultural hive mind develops, the people who refuse to join the hive (the very people who would be a catalyst for growth/liberation) are ostrasised.

ARE YOU STILL HAUNTED BY SELF-DOUBT POST-CULT?
by nvrgnbk indo you still find that you lack decisiveness and focus from time to time.
even though you are aware of your strengths and talents, are you sometimes paralyzed by the self-doubt that was taught to us in the watchtower cult?

dragon,
where exactly is the place that "normal" becomes "disturbed"? how can *anyone* make a call without enforcing their OWN moral code on another human being?
and will restrictions imposed on "self destructive" people also apply to politicians and biznuzz men and other high powered suits who with the stroke of a pen destroy an entire planet, enforcing ultimately their own morals upon all flora and fauna?

PS: it's not just "suicidal or self destructive people". NO ONE has free will. who's delusional again?

Government like Religion has to sell itself, they have selling points.
by frankiespeakin ina government must have selling points that keep people buying it.
one thing all governments do is to make people believe that the government is doing the right thing, that they are being protected by the government from other governments that are not as good as the government that is currantly in control of a particular piece of land.
they need some way to enforce their control, so make armies, police forces, and judical systems to see to it that any who don't follow the laws of the government while in the land area that has been controlled by the police forces, and armies of that government.. one way to make it easier for a government to keep control, is propaganda, when a government needs to use thier police force too much, then people start to question the government and is a sure indicator that the people are not doing what the government say they must do.

hey frankie!
i see this thread is a little old, but thought i'd chime in too anyways. been enjoying your threads lately too man.
and minimizes the need for the more exspencive police enforcement and very costly imprisionment of those who do not conform.,
and indeed, this would be the logical thing "governments" could do.
but in the case of law regarding psychedelic substances (particularily marijuana), governments are doing just the opposite. in 2005: almost 800 000 arrests related to marijuana, up almost 400 000 from 1985, i believe, in your country.
"police enforcement" and "costly imprisonment" is big business. B-I-G BIZNUZZ.
... i mean, it couldn't be... it wouldn't be that the government is against people healing themselves psychologically, and expanding their cosmic experience. it couldn't be. ...uh, unless the two are related..lol!
but i'd like to chant this babylon down for a moment. the audacity strikes me every time i think about it. to outlaw a plant people have used for thousands of years, and then enforce it fueling this huge industrial prison complex that spreads it's dark and ignorant fear down every road and nook and cranny in people's minds. i'm getting SUPER tired of this BS.

Philosophically; Will Governments Remain as we Evolve?
by frankiespeakin ini government as we now know it, has only a very recent history, it is evolving too like us, and we all know there is a lot of unfairness in government, they build bombs that will keep them in power, they waste money on military to insure they stay rulling, appoint men to lead that are often very insensitive to others, and often many are, racist, nationalist, imperialist, and what have you.. freedom is just a bi-word, that means servitude, you serve us, we will tell you what to do, what to think.. just try exersizing some freedom they don't like and see what happens to you: say you decided one day to not pay your taxes because you didn't like the way they were wasting money, be it on a war they start, or thier big military spending,,or anything that is a reasonable complaint, and see what they will do,, they will take away your freedom, even inprison you, and bully you to live in line with some laws they pass, that are not even good, or that really are just plain none of thier business to interfere with.. now we know governement seemingly supplies us with what are considered to be good things, roads, education, makes lots of technology possible, and so forth.
notice i said seemingly, that can be debated, for sure.
more objectivity is requird to debate this imo.. so i would think it very probable, that if man evolves in greater consciousness, that government as we now know it will be so unrecognizable in the future, (because it keeps evolving too,) that we today would view it as no government at all> perhaps as we evovle, just like most dna is *junk dna, and still part of the dna,, but not used, so it may be with governments in the future.. *junk at least as we now think it is read, which could be subject to change if the ways they find out how to read dna ..

hi frankie,
as a cultural unit, governments do evolve because there is a cultural niche that they fill. the cultural niche is the human mind, ultimately.
as the niche changes, it's possible that the governments will not survive and continue moving toward extinction.
my personal feeling is that as the human mind expands, and more and more people start moving away from a consumer/having psychological orinetation to a state of being, it will be understood that every single conscious human is self-governing.
i like to say that governments are in the service of property owners, being the largest property owners themselves. but if the human mind makes some sort of mass psychological migration away from a mind state of having to a mind state of being, the concept of ownership would be replaced by something more along the lines of stewardship. and i dunno, land could be used for what it already should be: growing food for it's local citizens to consume and trade with other local communities doing the same thing.
people have to wake up psychologically, first, if there is ever going to be any change from the current system. if not, then cie la vie! i mean, change is hard for people. akin to losing a religion i'd say.

Who and what would you have been if not for the JWs..............
by fifi40 inabandoned got me thinking about this is an earlier post, when he said along the lines of 'he wished he had never had thw whole jw experience'.
i also remember reading recently on another thread how one poster said their creative talents were stifled.. so now i am pondering what life woulda/coulda been like...............had i not had jw parents................in my own case i was very bright at school and excelled in maths and english subjects, but i remember zero encouragement from my parents for all that i was acheiving, or to pursue any type of career.............so maybe i was destined to be a journalist, an accountant (or maybe not)........i always liked the thought of acting, but guess that is most kids dream and i was also drawn to my fathers vocation, that of training racehorses but being the fourth child and having three older brothers my dad didnt take this very seriously.
i also love doing old houses up and interior design, which whilst i have done for my own personal use never considered as a career...................and then there is the latent writer in me just bursting with a bestseller.. oh my!!

bro,
Will this arrogant, presumptuous organization that has ruined so many lives, that loves to talk about humility and modesty, ever present a formal apology to all those who've suffered at their hands?
will any corporation or government ever apologize for the things they do/have done?
Would it really matter if they did?
no. moving on means not waiting around for apologies.
to me, if "they" ever do apologize, i hope i am so far removed from them that i remain unaware of it, frankly.
peace,
