How many Christmas yard ornaments is too many I ask? (New Pictures)
by erynw inthere is a house in my neighborhood that has to hold the record for christmas decorations in their yard.
the neighborhood i live in has one road in and out so we can't avoid this eyesore.. i swear, they have every inflatable, plastic, lit up, wire formed, animated yard decoration that has ever been manufactured.
it looks like k-mart threw up in their yard.. they have enough lights on the house, bushes, trees, eaves, roof, fence to signal the mothership into a safe landing from any galaxy in the universe.

Self Deceit and Faith.
by hillary_step inthis thread is inspired by a comment made on another thread, but i thought it would make an interesting discussion.. self deceit is described as a "misconception that is favorable to the person who holds it".
my premise is that faith is a form of self-deceit - lying to oneself.. so, i would ask of the "faithful" the following questions and would request that they be read carefully to ensure no that there is no misunderstanding of purpose.. 1) in what way is faith not self-deception?.
2) is a person who has faith in a god that you do not believe in, say for example siva, practicing a form of self-deception?.

Am I being Horrible?
by LouBelle inright so it's time to buy christmas gifts and the like - which is great - i do love giving.
now i don't usually give to get back.....but some of my so called mates just seem to like taking and taking..... this one guy - i'm mates with his sister and we have gotten to know each other and i'd say we have become friends - when it was his birthday (my first invite) i got him a really unique quirky gift, then came christmas and i got him 2 gifts and added a fun aspect to it, his birthday rolled around again this year and i got him another nice gift.. me: i got a card for chrismtas and he went halvies on a cheap book with his sister for my birthday.
so this year i'm not getting him anything, his sister comes to me and asks if i'm getting anything for him, so i said no - he'll be getting a card from me, she looked a lil stunned.. i do feel a lil bad but i'm tired of always giving and giving and giving and giving - hell he even forgot about my christmas party this weekend.

So it's not a matter of faith, any more than finding the footprint of a shoe in the mud and wondering if a shoe made it.
finding a footprint of a shoe in the mud merely tells you that a shoe has been present and the 'size' of the shoe...it does not tell you the material that the shoe is made of...it does not tell you whether the fasteners are laces, velcro, zips..it does not guarantee the age of the shoe, the usage of the shoe, the height of the shoe..it does not tell you how many feet the wearer had, the sex of the wearer or if he/she was in fact wearing a shoes on his/her hands and walking on them.
all of that information is assumption - for which one requires faith. either in ones own ability to come up with a plausible (but not definitive) explanation - or in the opinion of someone we consider to be an expert - or an eyewitness who we believe to be telling the truth.
are you in fact an eyewitness of prehistoric birds and the make-up of their feathers?...do you know anyone who is/was?
then your belief is based on faith...
which is fine...
for you.

Archaeopteryx feathers, although less documented than its other features, were similar in structure and design to modern-day bird feathers
when it says less documented does that mean that there are in fact examples of prehistoric feathers in existence..i mean in tact, complete, and not just skeletons and/or fossils.
because if not, surely the latter half of that statement becomes more a matter of faith than evidence.
which ergo would mean that were it not true would be self-deceit
which is fine if that works for you.
you know..whatever floats ya boat - or burns ya ship (see what i did there)

I'm beginning to wonder if the artists aren't like prisoners tapping on walls.
