Finallysomepride, I hate to admit it but I think you are right. Some HR departments seem more interested in "following the rules" rather than helping the employees. I say, follow the law, but also assist your employees.

What’s your opinion of your Human Resources department? Nowadays most companies, large or small, have an HR department. These HR departments can range from 1 to 10 or more individuals depending on the size of your company. What do you think of your HR department, or Human Resources in general?
I ask because recently I’ve noticed that quite a few people in the HR department seem to hate working with people. Some HR people are rude, condescending and apparently unwilling or unable to help the people they are there to assist. Sometimes the Employment Managers instead of making the applicants feel welcome and at ease, seem to enjoy making the applicant nervous. And they sometimes make the applicant wait 30 minutes or more past their scheduled appointment before they take them into the interview itself. Sometimes it feels as though walking into the HR department is like walking into the Principal’s office at school.
Now full disclosure here… I work in HR. I’m an HR Manager and I’m appalled at the behavior of some HR “professionals.” My job connects me with various other HR departments at different companies and I’ve witnessed or have been subject to the behaviors mentioned above on an escalating basis. It’s not until I introduce myself as, “Hi, I’m the HR manager from XYZ company” that the behavior completely changes. When I’m Joe Nobody or they think I’m an applicant, I’m treated like I’m not worth the time, but when the title comes along, all of a sudden, they begin to smile and the attitude completely changes. WTF!?
Not to pat myself too much on the back or to say I’m better than everyone else, but I really try not to act like this. And if I see any one of the people in my office act like this, I immediately correct this behavior. People actually like talking to and coming to our department/office. Am I being delusional? Why can’t more HR departments or HR professionals be more welcoming? The nature of HR in it of itself can be stressful and yes, the rules have to be enforced by HR, but do the HR people have to be jerks because of this?
Ok, as you can probably tell, I had a bad experience with an HR department today. Or maybe I’ve just hit a few rough patches in some HR offices recently. Please help me to restore my faith in my profession! So once again, I ask, what are your experiences and/or thoughts regarding HR?

I find it interesting that since the Watchtower is a worldwide organization, it sure seems to lack in cultural diversity. No anointed Governing Body members hailing from India, Japan, China, South America, Africa? Has there ever been an anointed Governing Body member from these “minority” countries? You think God would have included at least one in the group. How can you effectively preach to the world if the Governing Body can’t understand or relate to the rest of the world’s cultures? Seems like you have to be of White or Anglo-American descent to be a Governing Body member. Interesting.

Lifesaving Work
by mankkeli inknowing that we are living deep in the time of the end, we keep focused on the main work of true christianspreaching and disciple making.
(matthew 24:14; 28:19, 20) like our exemplar, jesus, we want to be intensely occupied with this lifesaving work.
how can we show that this work is important to us?

I'm not in LA, but in Orange County (about 25 miles drive from LA). I rarely go to LA, but I'll send you a message if I'm ever around the area. Also, if you are ever in The OC send me a message, would be fun to meet up.
By the way, why would you ever leave Austin? I've never been there but I hear it's an awesome place, people seem to love the atmosphere in Austin. Don't know how you feel about LA, but I hate it. It's polluted, dirty, bad traffic, takes forever to get around. Augh!!! Not an LA fan here. From Austin to LA? Seriously? ;-) Make your way to Orange County Velour.

The funny thing is, last year my family went to help out in... wait for it... New York! It appears Watchtower's own back yard is in need of help. Maybe they should stop publishing so many books and magazines and instead get out and preach in their own back yard. Of course, my family is going back to NY again this year to help preach. Sigh...

Wow, haven’t been around here in a while and it's nice to see some familiar names as well as new ones.
Well, it’s that time of year again when some members of my family decide that they need to go preach where “the need is great.” This usually means they will go to some rural area of the country, and travel by car to get to some remote house in the hope that there is someone at home they can speak with. Then they will get in the car and travel for another 30 minutes or so and repeat the process all over again. Two or three months later and lots of hours spent traveling by car (of course they count their time while in the car), they will come back home with some great stories to tell, and as they put it, “filled with Jehovah’s spirit.” This they do, because it is life saving work and they must reach out to those that have not heard the truth.
Now in my mind this raises a few questions. If they are conducting “life saving work,” why are they preaching to the choir? What I mean is, they are targeting individuals who speak their own language, individuals who have resources available to read or learn about the Jehovah’s Witness faith if they chose to do so, and the majority of these individuals already believe in God and Christianity. Is the need to reach these individuals really that great? Oh yes, I forgot, they are not Jehovah’s Witness; therefore yes, there is a need because they are doomed, or damned if you prefer.
But what about the BILLIONS of people in other countries who are not Christians? There are approximately 1.5 BILLION Muslims, 900 million Hindus, 400 million Buddhists, 24 million Sikhs, and 14 million Jews. (http://www.wholesomewords.org/missions/greatc.html)
I could be wrong, but I doubt the majority of these people have ever heard of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Wouldn’t these locations qualify as places where “the need is truly great?” Why are they not bending over backwards to travel to these locations and preach the good news? If preaching door-to-door or face-to-face is truly life saving work, are these lives not worth saving? Why is their “Society” not encouraging everyone to learn a new language, to travel and reach these individuals? No need to travel 30 minutes by car to reach one person, in most of these countries you can’t throw a stone without hitting at least 20 people. Wouldn’t these areas be considered “a preaching paradise?”
Oh but wait, these areas are dangerous, they would be putting their lives on the line. The governments are hostile and the people are not receptive. No need to unnecessarily risk their lives. But isn’t this exactly what Jesus did, risk/trade his life in a hostile environment and against non-receptive individuals, so that everyone could have a chance at life? Didn’t his apostles preach in hostile territories? Was the commandment to preach only in areas where your life or sense of security would not be in danger? I’m not saying to be stupid or to risk your life unnecessarily, but if preaching is truly life saving work, isn’t some risk worth it? This is what soldiers, policemen, firefighters do every day; they risk their lives and their sense of security so we can have ours. So I ask again; if the preaching effort is really the number one concern for Jehovah’s Witnesses, why are they not focusing their efforts where the need is truly great?
So, some members of my family will go this summer and preach where “the need is great.” But you and I know better don’t we?
Well enough of that, I guess I’m just in a reflective mood, thanks for letting me vent. I’ll try not to be such a stranger around here. Until next time.

What do they get out of it?
by noontide ina couple of weeks ago, i was at an event where there were a lot of bunnies running around; playboy bunnies that is (work related).
cute girls i guess, but they all have the same boob jobs, same nose jobs, same tans, and no uniqueness among them (ok...maybe one or two of them really stood out).
most of them literally are reduced, or reduce themselves to t&a.

Most of them literally are reduced, or reduce themselves to T&A. No big deal, to each their own. However something I saw did leave me scratching my head.
The event where these girls are present is actually quite fun and community based; they are mostly there as eye candy. However, there are also a lot of older men present at this event. Men in their 50’s, 60’s and older. These guys have money, lots of it. Again, the event is very legit (the local news can report on it – famous people attend), but after the event, quite a few of these girls hook up with these men. We’re talking about 18, 19, and 20 something year old girls hooking up with guys 3 times (or more) their age. I guess I’m trying to figure out the psychology of what goes on in the mind of these women. With the guys it’s easy, sex with young women. But as far as the women are concerned, what’s in it for them? What are they getting out of it? It’s not like these guys are going to leave their wives for them. These girls are certainly are not walking away with condos, or expensive cars; maybe some jewelry and a little bit more money in their pocket at best. And at these events, their looks are a dime a dozen, their chance of becoming famous (the next Pam Anderson) is greatly reduced. Yet, they f*** around with these old guys. Why would a young woman do this? What’s in it for them? What do they get out of it? I just found this behavior oddly interesting and disturbing at the same time. Any pshyc majors out there? Any ideas?

Is it sexual harassment...
by keyser soze in...if you check out a female co-worker from behind?
according to a harassment class i attended for work it is.
and if i see a co-worker doing this i'm obligated to report him to an hr representative.

Ok, I pulled my CA Labor Law Digest. It states (pg. 973), "staring MAY be harassment." It mentions a case where a female employee alleged a male employee stared at her 2 to 10 times each day, lasting from several seconds to 10 minutes. The court found that a violiation could be found based on a PATTERN of overt sexual harassment (the staring).
So there has to be a pattern. A one time event (or ISOLATED events) of staring is not considered harassment.
I guess it boils down to, if you are going to look, don't be a perv and do it discretely.

I work in HR and teach harassment classes. This is not considered sexual harassment, it falls under inappropriate behavior. This would be classified as leering or lewd behavior. Harassment is something that is done repeatedly and with malice. That being said, if someone does this on a continuous basis, they would probably end up in HR. We would discuss that such behavior is making other people uncomfortable and it needs to stop. Short of physically touching or verbally saying something to someone, it would not be considered harassment.
You reminded me of something that happened during one of my harassment training classes. I scheduled a class and had some people come in during their day off (I know, booooo for me). A female employee came in and sat down at the front of the class, right in front of where I stand. She wore a very short and low cut sun dress; she also happened to be a very busty girl. I had never been so uncomfortable in my life! Here I am teaching about harassment, telling everyone to keep their hands and eyes to themselves and not stare or leer at their co-workers, and right in front of me is this girl who is all legs and boobs. The worst part is she kept participating in class, so I had to keep looking in her direction. All I remember is that I kept saying to myself, "just look at her eyes, don't look down, don't look down."
