  this is what we were told in a recent public talk.

  if true then it is very intriguing and may support the point being made in the talk that we know nothing compared to god.

  the audience was spell bound and even i had to admit the young man gave an excellent talk.. i thought i'd come here to check the facts first though.

  Atheism 2.0

  apologies if this has been posted before or even discussed.. this ted talk gets at the heart of what atheism is missing and my wife an di discussed this for a long time last night.

  in short religion provides a framework for meeting, for ritual, for art, education and sociality.

  without this framework atheism can seem lonely harsh and certainly disorganised (the general idea that education and culture can replace the gap may well be true but without a formal structure the route to personal mental fulfillment is somewhat piecemeal and patchwork.

  the little girl was speaking slowly to the psychologist (who was taking notes rapidly) and choosing her words haltingly.. it was obvious to the policemen nearby that she was upset, shaken and trying to cope with her distress.. "my uncle took me to live with him when my parents died in the plane crash.

  he bought my clothes, cooked my meals and made sure i had games to play, tv to watch and any dolls or toys i asked for.".

  she stopped momentarily...as if to sift her thoughts around.

  Newton invented calculus first though he called it "fluxions" in the mid 1660s. However he did not publish this work as he was a bit eccentric apparently but his notes from that time were taken as some amount of proof (no pun intended)

  Leibniz came up with essentially the same idea, independant of Newton and wrote his paper on it in 1684, sometime later. He coined the phrase "calculus".

  The controversy over who invented it first was a matter of much debate in the day but credit seems to go to both for their independant discoveries
