  JW Urban Ledgends - Fact or Fiction?

  growing up as a jehovahs wittness my parents used to rationalize or have a urban ledgends reguarding why we could not do something or why something was evil/bad.

  some of these i have heard in various forms around here in the forums.

  here are some expamples of what i mean.

  ok, so ive been reading this book called schildren of the matrix, which to be honest with you is alot of crock... except a few very thought provoking questions.... i have heard it said that the "founder" of jehovah's witnesses pastor c.t.

  russell was a member of the illuminati... this author says that originally the bible students were called the "mind-control sect" by charles taze russell himself... and that he was a member of the illuminati and this was a new way to control more minds and more of the world by the aforementioned group.... what do you think???.

  Is disfellowshipping bad?

  it seems that some people are keen to use disfellowshipping as the measure of anything bad.

  if someone is deleted from a forum for being obnoxious then that is akin to being disfellowshipped and is b-a-d. yada yada yada.. is it?.

  is every disfellowshipping "bad" simply by virtue of being a disfellowshipping?.

  Everything has rules or laws, no matter what you do, work, boards, religions, civil codes, ect.....people have to be responsible enough to realize there are consequences to breaking them. And this board like most things, states the rules and the consequences for breaking them. If someone wants to break them, that's their choice, but they have to accept what my happen if they do.

  for the first time last night i came across information about 586 being the actual year jerusalem was destroyed.

  Sect or cult?

  so i finally decided to get my a** to the library and read some real research on cults.

  the book i'm starting with is "psychodynamic perspectives on religion, sect and cult.

  in the introduction they mention margaret thaler singer's definition of a destructive cult as an organization in which:a leader claims divinity or special relationship with god.

  Here's some interesting definitions I came across:

  The American Family Foundation defined cults as:
  
  "A group or movement exhibiting great or excessive devotion or dedication to some person, idea, or thing, and employing unethical manipulative or coercive techniques of persuasion and control (e.g. isolation from former friends and family, debilitation, use of special methods to heighten suggestibility and subservience, powerful group pressures, information management, suspension of individuality or critical judgment, promotion of total dependency on the group and fear of leaving it), designed to advance the goals of the group’s leaders, to the actual or possible detriment of members, their families or the community."

  The sociological definition includes such things as “ as authoritarian leadership patterns, loyalty and commitment mechanisms, lifestyle characteristics, (and) conformity patterns (including the use of various sanctions in connection with those members who deviate)”

  I find the second one interesting, "use of various sanctions in connection with those members who deviate". Sound familiar?

  i am forcing myself to do this - i feel nauseated, depressed... my hands are shaking.

  i know many of you see this and laugh.

  but for those of you who arn't, you know how hard it is for me to do this.

  Daniel, I read this post and it looks like I could have written it. I for one am not laughing. It's really hard when family and friends expect you to walk a certain way or do things such as that when your heart and mind is not in it. I'm still trying to figure out what to do and wonder if it gets easier. My thoughts are with you.

  i think the whole interpretation is being over-thought or twisted to match history.

  (Daniel 2:37-38) 37You, O king, the king of kings, you to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the might, and the strength and the dignity, 38 and into whose hand he has given, wherever the sons of mankind are dwelling, the beasts of the field and the winged creatures of the heavens, and whom he has made ruler over all of them, you yourself are the head of gold.

  Daniel states the the king himself is the head of gold, not the whole nation which is taught. What if the 5 sections of the image are simply Babylonian kings......not world empires?

  (Daniel 2:39-43) 39"And after you there will rise another kingdom inferior to you; and another kingdom, a third one, of copper, that will rule over the whole earth. 40 "And as for the fourth kingdom, it will prove to be strong like iron. Forasmuch as iron is crushing and grinding everything else, so, like iron that shatters, it will crush and shatter even all these. 41 "And whereas you beheld the feet and the toes to be partly of molded clay of a potter and partly of iron, the kingdom itself will prove to be divided, but somewhat of the hardness of iron will prove to be in it, forasmuch as you beheld the iron mixed with moist clay. 42 And as for the toes of the feet being partly of iron and partly of molded clay, the kingdom will partly prove to be strong and will partly prove to be fragile. 43 Whereas you beheld iron mixed with moist clay, they will come to be mixed with the offspring of mankind; but they will not prove to be sticking together, this one to that one, just as iron is not mixing with molded clay.

  Each section it states "another kingdom" will rise. well each king in succession sets up his own kingdom. If you read it, it just doesn't feel like world empires.....more so starting out saying that Nebuchadnezzar is the head of gold. There where 5 kings and 5 parts of the image.

  Breast and arms of Silver - Evil-Merodach

  Belly and Thighs of Copper - Neriglissar

  Legs of Iron - Labashi-Marduk

  Feet of clay mixed with iron - Nabonidus (who co-ruled with son Belshazzar)

  That feet I found interesting due to the fact history shows the 2 men actually co-ruled together till it came to an end by Persia, who came in like a giant rock and crushed them. What do you think? Or am I nuts?

  my mum lives next door to a little newsagents shop run by an asian family.

  i used to live there, and i had the phone number of mr badat because sometimes people used to try and break in.

  mr badat died last year and a younger moslem family took over.

  what's the strangest or most exotic food you've ever 'experienced'?.

  for me, i suppose, it was badly cooked (i cooked it myself, say no more) crocodile....i'd like to try swan, and if i can find a loophole in the law, i will.

  Oh Lego...shark is really good........almost like swordfish. Can hook them all day day down here.

  The weirdest....alligator tail. Before you guys say....oh gross....it really does almost taste like chicken!!
