marketman,
welcome. I was raised a JW, and have since left. While it is ultimately your own decision to make, I will give the following advice: Make an informed choice. Choosing a faith is a big decision, and you should know all the facts. Look around on this site to get one perspective.
Also, be sure to ask questions of the person you are studying with. Lots of them.
take care,
silent

Is becoming a witness the right thing for me
by marketman ini've been struggling for quite some time now about continuing my exploration of the jehovah witness faith.
i am a "cradle" catholic and have been very involved with the church.
i started to become disillusioned several months back with all of the tradition, habits, and teachings of the church--which i began to seriously doubt.

I was wondering... is there a possibility this could go all the way to the Supreme Court or is this something that can only go as high as the California Supreme Court?
-----------------------------------------------
The US Supreme Court can choose to hear ANY case from ANY court if they so choose. Theoretically, they could ask to hear the case now (based on the lower court ruling), but usually the US Supreme Court only hears appeals from state supreme courts. Again, the US Supreme Court onlt chooses to hear cases where they feel there are constitutional issues. This case seems to meet the criteria (1st ammendment issues regarding clergy privilage).
I'd be shocked if this doesn't end up in the US Supreme Court.

p.s. The wheels of justice (especially at this level) grind very, very slowly. Until I saw "Erin Brockovich" I never fully appreciated how tough tort law really was. Replace "contaminated drinking water" with "protecting pedophiles" and throw in a few WT mags and it's basically the same story. When Kimberly wins, I wonder who will play her in the movie. :-) -

Changes that will come in Jehovah's witnesses organization
by PeLe, ThE Soccer King ini have a strong reason to believe that the change that will be announced in next few days among jehovah's witnesses will bring a major "refining" work among its members.
take a note of this:
if are not regular in meetings and service of field than you're signalling that you're no longer a jehovah's witness.

Dumping the inactive might mean losing "church tax" money in countries with that legal arrangement - and such a radical move could
also have unforseen legal consequences even in the US, in regard to child custody, for example.
--------------------------
spot on. In many European countries, such laws has forced the "informal" judicial structure to gain importance. Notably on blood and voting issues. With recent legal setbacks here in the states (notably in CA), I expect more of that here in the states. "Bad associations spoil useful habits" (1 cor 15:33) has been used to justify "marking" in the past, and I could see it likely applied directly to inactive ones.
One step further, I would not be shocked if the formal judiciai structure (judicial committees and S-77/ S-79 forms) is replaced by a completely "informal" structure based on marking and "word of mouth". There will be shunning still, it's just all going underground.
DFing is going to go the way of the dodo. To be replaced by a more "viral" judicial structure. Less paperwork for discovery in lawsuits...

Big announcement after all DC have ended?
by Quandary ini was told by a reliable source that the organization will be making a "big announcement" at the end of the summer when all the dcs have ended.
has anyone else heard this?
maybe this is the "new light" they have alluded to in recent wt study articles?

I'd be shocked if they don't formally get rid of DFing / DAing, and broaden the application of "bad associations spoil useful habits." No formal announcements of even marking. Just the viral "smear" campaigns.
The judicial committees and the S-77 will end up going the way of the dodo.

Being a witness and going to college is an extremely hard thing to do.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
yeah, the time constraints of a college workload really show you how much time being a JW takes. and, sadly many do wake later...

the only thing good I can get out of it is wanton nudity and drugs. Now granted, if that's what your are looking for in college, you can find it. But you probably won't be there for long, since college is first and foremost to learn.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
where can you find this? please let me know! :-)
seriously, congratulations! I have a BS in Computer Science, and I'm winding my way towards my PhD.

I honestly cannot see the WTS taking this any higher up(Supreme Courts).
----------------------------------------------------
I disagree. They cannot let this stand. The Swaggart ruling was kids stuff compared to this, and all that did was destroy a pillar in their century old business model (book sales). This is carving the heart out of the second (real estate).
They are sitting on a keg of culpable dynamite (blood, child abuse), and their firewall was breeched in ONE ruling.
Judah Ben and the rest of the crack WT legal team just s--t a brick.
smile.

yeah, they call the insurance premiums "contributions".
Everything with them is a "contribution". Oh, I would so love to see them get busted for this little racket.
