Did you shoot-down Dates with Lame Excuses?
by Dune inthe semester started last week and i was walking to class today and i found this girl that i've known since my freshman year.
anyway, she seems to be very interested in my because she always invites me to parties and outings with her friends.
for the years that i've known her i've been giving her lame excuses as to why i cant go to the movies, restaurants or parties with her.

For some reason the Watchtower had a really good swing through the 90's and into the first part of this decade, but it seems that now everything is slowing down some. I think there are some reasons for this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even after the "generation change" MANY JWs in the back of their minds thought 2000 would be the end. Then 9/11 happened, and many went flocking back. 4 years later, and Jee-zeus hasn't arrived on his big white horsey yet. -

do you think the end is near?
by drew sagan ini will say that the "evidence" for a drastic change in mankinds history (end of the world, the great day of god the almighty, what ever you want to call it) seems likely when doing a survey of where mankind is a the current point in time.
nuclear weapons, wars, technology, globalization, and ecological destruction all seem to point towards a place that mankind has never been before.
mankind is unquestionably in a position differant from any point in human history.

You mention a step we've taken in this century. To what step do you refer?

How Suicide Will Increase Among Jehovah's Witnesses
by metatron ini'm not a psychologist but a little logic tells you that somethings got to give.. i see too many witnesses who are falling into the "escalating commitment" trap.
your life is a mess, so you find the "truth"!.
next, you commit yourself further by dropping college.

I wonder how many JW's have committed 'passive' suicide by not caring for themselves physically, because the 'end' is near.

Many, many JWs have eating disorders, which are a sign of emotional distress. -

excellent observation (as usual) metatron. What you refer to is formally called "fallacy of sunk costs" by psychologists.
Actually, it also explains why the average faithful Witness is getting older in the Western World. Most people with any sort of thinking ability are leaving either by early middle age (35 - 40), or sooner (20's) if they go to college. Before the "sunk costs" get too high.
Expect a great "die-off" in the next 10 - 20 years, as the rate of those dying exceeds the rate of newly baptized. -

giving up on paid TV advertising
------------------------------------------------
lol - I'd be surprised if they "paid" for those advertisements on TV. By law, TV stations must set aside a portion of their advertising time for PSA (public service announcements). Any PSA will do the trick, and the JW tv ads were classified as PSAs. -

Circuit Overseer Pensions and the Implications
by AlanF ini just learned that the watchtower society has instituted a pension plan of sorts for circuit overseers.
this is a big change.. previous to this new plan, the various kinds of "traveling overseers" were pretty much on their own when they retired from the traveling work.
in a few cases, such men were invited to live out their lives in bethel, but in most cases they simply went back to being normal rank and file members who had to fend for themselves financially.. i can only speculate that the reason for this change was that the society has been having difficulty getting elders to become circuit overseers.

You can be sure the rank and file will be paying for this pension...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
They probably will assign a cost to each congregation publisher for the pension, and "suggest a contribution" be sent by the congregation to cover this expense. It's just another way to drain more $$$ from the local congregations.
A similar scam is in place for the CO's auto insurance and the lease on the car. Every publisher in the circuit is assigned a cost (like $5-6 per head) and the congregation as a whole cuts a check to Brooklyn for the "per head" amount.
It will be interesting to see if the "pension cost" equals "pension outlays".
