The few I knew were down to earth...all old timers...unasuming, quite and not the least bit in fear of the society...this was in the sixties all were in their seventies or eighties...how they would get along with todays WTS and BOE would be hard to say...don't think they would take any s--- from them, least the ones I remember wouldn't...

Body of Elders...
by Quentin inive been on the board a little over six months.
before coming here i would tell people: i can be surprised, but never shocked.
thats no longer true after reading through the topics and comments.

I agree with all comments. I've been away so long perhaps that's why it shocks me so. Also, I simply walked away, back then there was no BOE up everyones tail pipe. Seems to me, with the elder system in place, the WT simply tightened their grip on the rank and file. Ironic it was done pre 1975. Don't suppose the GB anticipated the fallout and knew they would have to exert ridged control over the flock? Naw, not the GB there a buch of befuddled old men. Nothing smart about those guys.

I’ve been on the board a little over six months. Before coming here I would tell people: I can be surprised, but never shocked. That’s no longer true after reading through the topics and comments. I left the WTS thirty years ago, my choice, no one chased after me, spied on me or made “friendly” unexpected visits. I left and never heard from anyone until years later when I DA’d and a couple of suits came for a visit that lasted about three minutes, which is a story unto itself.
I make no defense for the Society past or present and do not suggest that the WT has never been anything than what it is, a life and family-destroying cult. What shocks me is the Body of Elders arraignment. What I have read on this board about the BOE is mind-boggling. To me that one thing alone should have rank and file JWs thundering out the front door in droves. I’m shocked and don’t get it. How can anyone one voluntarily live under that kind of physiological brutality?

thank you for replying to my topic on william h. conley, the watch tower society's first president.
if not for your finding the "treasure" you described, we might not know this fact even today.

My daughter attends Texas Wesleyan in Ft. Worth. She is working toward a degree in criminal justice and crime scene investigation. As part of her degree plan she has to take so many hours of sociology and physiology. This semester she is taking a class in deviant behavior. The professor is allowing her to do two term papers on JW’s. One on the high control of the group and one on the way pedophilia is dealt with by the WTBTS. I’m going to help with the research. I haven’t done research in over fifteen years. He wants eight references and will allow one antidotal reference per paper. Both papers must be no less than ten pages. This promises to be interesting.
Suggestions?

Reveal something "weird" or "unusual" about yourself
by JH inwhatever i drink from the fridge, i put it into the microwave for 10 seconds so that it won't be too cold to drink.. .
whenever i drink ice cold liquids, it irritates my tongue/mouth and often triggers a sore throat.
now you have additional proof that i'm weird .

BOND, JAMES BOND...and J.B.....John Barry vis a vis O.H.M.S.S.
by Terry infor old geezers such as myself, the james bond film was an annual event appearing around christmas time.
sean connery was the embodiment of the character onscreen with just enough seriousness to deflect the outrageousness of the plot.
but, what really sold the series to me personally was the music.

What is your opinion of John Williams? His music seems to carry a movie well. At least to the untrained ear(that being me with the ear problem).

Well lets see...a good friend who was the song leader in our KH talked me into taking his place one night as he had to leave early...after giving me about five minutes if instruction on which way to move the hands and so forth he left...when the time came I went to the front and did the "Walk Like An Egyptian"...I felt like such a dodo...when the meeting was done I was knocking people over getting out the door...fastest I'd ever left a KH...
He was paying me back of course for the time, right after he got married, I went to the drug store with him and shilled for an item he needed. When the girl asked "how many" I said "give me a box"...he was numb with shock...watching him pay was like watching a slow motion segment of a Peckinpaw(sp?) movie...yup, it was pay back time...
