  Smithwick's anyone?

  i have never been much for dark, foreign beers.

  mostly just miller lite, maybe a heineken or two.. one day matt and i were downtown and went to a pub here in nashville to have a few beers.

  feeling a bit adventurous, i asked the bartender if she had any suggestions.

  Smithwick's is an Irish red ale style beer from Kilkenny in Ireland. It originated from and is still brewed at 'St. Francis abbey Brewery' in the city. Known as 'Smithwicks Brewery' until c.2000, it was founded 1710 by the Franciscan monks and later the name Smithwicks came from John Smithwick. It has the ruins of the original Franciscanabbey in its grounds. It is the major ale producer in Ireland. It was purchased from Irish Ale Breweries in 1965 by Guinness and is now, along with Guinness, part of Diageo.

  From the early '60s until the mid '80s, Smithwicks was probably the second most popular beer in Ireland after Guinness.

  When pronouncing the name, the 'W' is silent. In Ireland, it is generally pronounced as 'Smithicks', 'Smitticks', 'Smidicks' or 'Smeth-icks'. The variation of pronunciations is mostly due to differing accent and dialects of the Irish. When ordering in the US, 'Smithicks' is the preferred method, while 'Smiddicks' is the most prevalent pronunciation in Canada.

  Smithwick's Draught has a rubyred tone with a stable, but slightly thin head. Its texture is smooth and refined, with a bitter and complex finish. Although of lesser fame than Guinness, Smithwicks is often regarded as the 'local favourite' amongst Irish pubgoers. In 2004, Diageo PLC began distribution in the USA. Smithwick's had previously been marketed in Canada with great success.

  • Smithwick's Barley Wine is now brewed by Macardle Moore Brewery another Guinness-owned brewery.
  • Kilkenny Cream Ale is a similar beer to Smithwick's Draught, however it has a cream head similar to Guinness and has a stronger taste (more bitter than Smithwicks). The 'Kilkenny' name was originally used during the '80's and '90's to market a stronger version of Smithwick's for the European and Canadian market due to difficulty in pronunciation of the word Smithwicks; but it now refers to a similar yet distinctly different beer.

  I'll have to try that KidA. I'm always open to trying new beers, I just haven't found a dark brew outside of Smithwick's that I like......plus it's a really fun name to say when your drunk. smmmmithhhhwicksss...smmmiticksss....swwwwithmmmicks...lol.

  I have never been much for dark, foreign beers. Mostly just Miller Lite, maybe a Heineken or two.

  One day Matt and I were downtown and went to a pub here in Nashville to have a few beers. Feeling a bit adventurous, I asked the bartender if she had any suggestions. So she poured me a dark beer into a tasting glass. I said, ''No. I don't like dark beers, sorry.'' She said that she didn't either, but she loved this one.

  Hmmmm....

  So I tried it, and LOVED IT! It was Smithwick's. And much to my despair, it seems the only place in the world to find this wonderful brew is either at that bar, or over in Ireland. I am absolutely in love with this beer! I look forward to every weekend so I can go downtown and have myself a pint or two of Smithwick's.

  Are any of our European friends or any beer conoseuir's familiar with this lovely brew? Like it? Love it? Don't really give a damn?

  Funny how the ferocity of chihuahuas has gone unnoticed till just now. When is the last time a chihuahua ripped the throat out of another dog, or killed a kid? If chihuahuas are so ferocious, why aren't they being used as guard dogs, for fighting and all that? I think somebody w an agenda is into denial and is twisting reality.

  An agenda? Who has an agenda? All I do is present the facts as I see them. Are you even reading my posts? Did I ever deny that there are pit bulls who attack people? No. Have I ever denied that ANY DOG who attacks a human should be put down? NO. But NO DOG should be naturally vicious towards a human. I don't give a damn if it's a chihuahua or a 100 pound pit bull. The problem for pit bull's, or any large breed for that matter, is that they are naturally going to do more damage, and they also get better ratings in the news than a chihuahua. And I can keep saying this over and over and over until I'm blue in the face...but it's not going to matter for certain people because they only want to focus on the negative.   The Pit Bull was so respected in the early 1900's that the US Military chose an image of a Pit Bull to represent our country on war posters.

  Pit bull's used to be the all American dog, but they just got too popular for their own good. In the 1980's, people started exploiting them for status, illegal fighting, and for money. As a result, through inbreeding, and people's greed and stupidity, we now have the problems we're faced with today. All of a sudden, there was an influx on our society of dogs with bad temperments, mental problems, and no socialization. HUMANS did this to them...and you're going to blame the dog?

  There are so many positive things that pit bulls do nowadays, and it breaks my heart the most people don't realize it, or don't acknowledge it. They're used for therapy, search and rescue, narcotics busts, so many things!

  

  But like I said before, I can't change the world. And I never set out to do so. I never even wanted to get this involved with this thread. But my heart got the best of me. I've said all I can say, and there's not much I can do about how other people feel. So I'm leaving it alone now.

  Yeeeeaaaaahhh....I feel your pain Daystar....

  I work for a company who does credit card orders for birth certificates. Really all we do is take down the info for the search and process the credit cards. Everything else is governed by the specific state your ordering for....prices, shipping, who can order, id required...blahblahblah...

  So my day is something like...

  ''Thank you for calling -----, may I help you?''

  ''I want a birth certificate tomorrow!''

  ''Ok...what state are you ordering for?''

  ''Ohio.''

  ''Well sir, Ohio takes at least 2-3 weeks to process their orders...''

  ''WHAT?!! WHAT?!! ON YOUR WEBSITE IT SAYS YOU CAN DO FEDEX OVERNIGHT!!!! I NEED THIS TOMORROW!!!''

  ''I understand that, but next to where it says Overnight shipping, it says to allow 2-3 weeks for proce-''

  ''SO YOU'RE BASICALLY TELLING A LIE WHEN YOU SAY OVERNIGHT? IT SHOULD SAY 2-3 WEEKS?''

  ''Sir, they send it to you overnight once the process the order.''

  ''WHY DID MY WIFE GET HERS IN 3 DAYS?!!!''

  ''Was she born in Ohio?''

  "No...she was born in Massachusetts.''

  ''They get their orders out in 2-3 days sir.''

  ''THEN WHY CAN'T YOU GET MY OHIO CERTIFICATE OUT IN 2-3 DAYS?''

  So multiply that times 50 states times about 1000 calls a day times 5 days a week.....**sigh**

  Wonder if the inbreeding thing can be affecting other breeds as well?

  Yes...it can, and unfortunately does.

  I'm leaving this discussion now b/c I HAVE GOT to get my work done....and I've pretty much said all wanted to say. Hopefully I've educated at least one person.

  ''America's first war dog was a Pit Bull named Stubby who earned several medals and the rank of sergeant for his service in W.W.I.. Stubby was wounded in action twice, he saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack and he single handedly captured a German spy. He received a hero's welcome and was even honored at the White House. He inspired the U.S. Military K-9 Corps. He also went on to become Georgetown University's mascot.''

  Stubby in World War I
  World War 1 had just ended on the day that Stubby marched proudly at the head of the 102nd infantry as they passed in review before President Woodrow Wilson. Stubby was an American hero. He was also a brown-and-white American pit bull terrier. Mascot and member of the 102nd, the young dog had served his men and his country in 17 battles in France. He had saved hundreds of lives, and his loyalty and courage had inspired thousands of soldiers. Now he delighted the president with his customary salute, a paw raised ceremoniously to his face.
  Stubby was destined to become the most decorated war dog in U.S. history.
  
  He was just a scrawny stray puppy when Private John Conroy picked him up on the campus of Yale University in 1917. The lonely young private was at Yale for training before being sent to the European front. Soon he and the pup were inseparable. When deployment orders came, Conroy managed to smuggle the patchy pup aboard the troop ship bound for France. Once aboard, Stubby quickly won the hearts of all the men of the 102nd. They even taught him to perform his trademark salute by raising his right paw to his face. When finally discovered by Conroy’s commander, the little stray was so beloved by the troops, he was allowed to stay to keep up morale.
  
  But once in Europe, Stubby had to grow up fast. Within weeks of their arrival in the European theatre, the 102nd was under fire on the front lines in France. And it was there that the young pit bull began to really prove his mettle.
  
  Stubby reached the trenches of the front line in February 1918, in the midst of a horrific battle. Although the dog was never trained to cope with such nightmarish conditions, he calmly endured a mounting barrage of shelling for the first 30 days. In fact, Stubby’s caretakers were amazed by his cool under fire, and absolutely stunned when he voluntarily ventured out into the battle zone to seek out and comfort wounded soldiers caught in the crossfire. News of the little dog’s heroism and fidelity reached the French village of Domremy, and after the fighting subsided the women of the town presented him with a hand-sewn chamois coat, decorated with Allied flags and his name stitched in gold thread.(1)
  
  During the next 18 months Stubby carried messages under fire, stood sentry duty, and helped paramedics find the wounded in “no man’s land”. He gave early warning of deadly gas attacks and was credited many times with saving his entire regiment. When Stubby found and helped capture a German spy who was mapping a layout of the Allied trenches, he was awarded the honorary rank of Sergeant. When seriously wounded by shrapnel, he was sent to the Red Cross hospital for surgery just like any other soldier. Once recovered, the gutsy pit bull returned to his regiment and continued to serve until November 11, 1918, the day the war ended.
  
  Upon his return to the U.S. after the Armistice, Stubby was greeted by a wildly cheering American public. Recognition of his valor came from all directions. Named a life member of the Red Cross and the American Legion, he was awarded many medals including one by General John J. Pershing. Called to the White House several times to meet Presidents Harding and Coolidge, he led more regimental parades than any other dog in history.
  Stubby spent his final years with John Conroy, the beloved soldier who had rescued him so many years ago, until dieing of old age in 1926.

  The "scary breeds" of dogs ARE more scary (agressive, prone to bite, etc.) on average for the simple fact that they have been BRED to be scary. Thus the use of the words "breed", and "bred" when speaking of dogs in this situation.

  No dear, they were bred to fight bulls and other dogs in the ring. Any dog that showed aggresion toward a human was immediately put down, b/c 99.9% of the time, it wasn't the owners handling the dogs in the rings, so they had to be trusted not to bite the handler in the heat of the fight.

  In other words: big mean breed = (in its mind) can take out a human, therfore will attack said human.

  It sounds like you feel that every ''big mean breed'' is out to attack humans at random. I'm sorry you feel that way, but I'm not going to try to change your mind, b/c I doubt very seriously that I can. You seem to have made up your mind.
