The one war movie that disturbed me that I could not watch all of was Casualties of War where the Vietamese woman gets kidnapped, raped and murdered. The murmur scene was just too brutal and graphic to ever forget.

Film Scenes that got burnt onto your memory
by greendawn inwhat were some film scenes that pleased or horrified you so much that they stayed vivid in your memory for a long time?
the one i always recall is the scene where anthony hopkins (playing as hannibal lector) lobotomised ray liotta (paul krendler) cutting off pieces of his brain and giving them to him to eat.
he also took some of liotta's cooked brain in a plane and gave them to an unsuspecting passenger boy sitting next to him to eat.

The torture scene from "The Dentist"
Are you referring to the tooth drilling scene in The Marathan Man with Dustin Hoffman? That scene stayed with me watching that! *shudder*

Did You Lead A "Double Life"?
by minimus ini believe jehovah's witnesses are trained to learn how to live a double life.
we were trained to use subterfuge with teachers, the law, doctors and the courts.
we were trained in "theocratic strategy" .

While I was active, I didn't lead a double life. I was baptized in 1987; around 1990 to 1992 I became inactive so I guess you could say I lived a double life during that time. I went back and faced the elders in the congregation and told them about some of the conduct "unbecoming a Christian" I had done during that time I was inactive. I did this since I lived in a small town and some of the stuff I had done was widely known by some and I wanted them to hear it all from me instead of second hand. I was counseled and privately reproved, became active again and then started to fade around 1998 after some things about the WTS didn't set well with me.

Just how hyped was 1975?
by MuadDib inaight.
i was raised in the jws, but i'm still young (22) and all my life what i've been told is that the society never really promoted 1975 as the definitive year for the coming of armageddon.
what i was always told is that some overzealous witnesses took certain things out of context and developed a very extreme reaction - ie selling their houses, quitting their jobs, dropping out of school, etc.

How much was printed in the publications concerning 1975 is irrelevent. The fact that the WTS endorsed what was said on stage at the KHs and at the assemblies is enough for them to bear full responsibility. What is said on the platform is regarded by the rank and file as coming from the WTS (FDS) as if it was printed.

Oscars - did your favorite win?
by pratt1 ini agreed with all of the winners at last night's oscar's except for the best actor award.. i would have given it to joquin phoenix.
i thought his performance as johnny cash was great.. i also thought that jon stewart did a great job.
i particularily liked the opening skits.

I was glad to see Reese Witherspoon win.
Did you noticed the comments they made about the advantages of seeing the movies on the big screen instead of waiting for the DVD?
You can tell the movie picture industry is really losing money since more people are not going to the movies anymore as much as they used to; I wouldn't pay $8 for every movie I want to see. A lot of people cannot afford it and are waiting for the DVD to come out.

I haven't seen any JWs around since I have lived in Little Rock and I used to work at home. I remember where I lived when I was active in a small town I couldn't hardly go to any house that wasn't already visited by another JW the previous week or so. There were a lot of pioneers in the cong I went to back then.
What was the name of the tract that was distributed around 1994 that envited everybody to the special talk around the same time as this? I can't remember.

How were you treated?
by snarf inwhen you were in the org.
how did your non-believeing relatives treat you?
my relatives got very distant from me, probably cause all i would talk about was "truth" and try and hand out mags.

My family treated me fine. A lot of my family that were non-JWs actually believed but just didn't want to do anything about it or change their lives to conform to the WTS standards. They did not dred to see me turn into their driveway to visit because I was never the type to shove my own beliefs down anybody else's throats. If they brought up a topic or whatever, I would discuss that topic but I would always to witness by my actions and set an example instead of paying lip service.

A 'Screw the Publishers' GB Strategy?
by metatron inwhile a man might hold a particular office, there is no guarantee that his personal faith will continue.
there are a number of older.
brothers , at bethel and elsewhere, who quietly hold to a 'it's a good life' view of the 'truth' - as opposed to the blind zombie-faith of.
