Jez, I understand your frustration at the hypocracy, but I think they deserve a little more compassion.
I was one of those jws living a double life in high school. I was a terrible teen. I went to parties, dated, snuck out of the house constantly, drank, smoked, drugs. And three or more times a week I went to the kh and pretended I was living according to standards that I couldn't possibly aspire to and didn't agree with.
It is hard to be a teenager and that stuff just makes it harder. I wasn't encouraged to join any constructive activities, such as sports or clubs. It's no wonder that some jw kids end up worse then some of their worldly peers.
I think that being able to "stop the lie and live" requires more maturity than the average teenager has.

Young JWs-living a lie
by Jez infor the past year, i have been observing the jw kids that i know.
i am in a unique situation as i work at the local high school, therefore see many of them on a daily basis.
let me tell you, 80% of them are totally undistinguishable as jws.

Music recommendations for ...?
by Markfromcali inthere has been similar threads, but maybe if we get more specific about when we like to listen to a particular cd it could be interesting.
i was just listening to the oracle cd by michael hedges, great mellow acoustic guitars and i love the cover of tomorrow never knows.
so this one i'd say is for relaxing and blissing out.

I have whole playlists for any occasion, far too long to mention.
My two best "feel good" songs at the moment are "Child Inside" by Quamba Zoo. (It's a song that plays on a lot of Sea World commercials) and "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett. They both bring me an instant sense of happiness. -

Which avatars ''appeal'' to you (credit to jt stumbler)
by MidwichCuckoo inafter reading jt stumbler's topic on avatars, i recognised that certain avatars appeal to me, and i'm sure others feel the same.... .
elsewhere (no idea why, gimme a clue), ezekiel3 (says a lot), euphemism (loved the marx bros) and googlemagoogle (so classical) spring to mind, oh, ip_sec's last avatar (the red pyramid) - want to revert back ip_sec?
oh, and stillajwexelder - after reading your posting on jt stumbler's thread i realise i previously had the wrong impression - lol.

Right now my favorite is talesin's. I like the strong women in comic books theme, and I always know that wise words will follow when I see that image.
Purplesofa used to have a great Audrey Hepburn image. The shoes are fun too, but I loved that "Breakfast at Tiffany's" feel.
I also like a lot of the manga style avatars. The artwork appeals to me. -

that's Life calling you to your True Potential!
I'm not quite ready to use all those capital letters yet. I still have a lot of scepticism, and I'm afraid of getting into anything corney. Could be that the whole jw experience has done too much damage.
But I think I should try to be as open minded as possible. Thanks for the guidance, I'll do my best. -

Favorite comic book character, from Terry Moore's "Strangers in Paradise". You would have to read the story to understand. In this particular scene, she is feeling very alone, as I was when I first came here.
She also was once the poster child for librarian avengers. Another subject close to my heart. -

Talk about coincidence...I can honestly say that that book is sitting next to me right now. Someone requested it at my library, I thought it sounded interesting and so I requested it too. It came in today. I haven't even opened it yet, but I'm getting goosebumps from this post.

Winston, Thanks for the encouraging post. I have a lot of that hate and bitterness. It's always good to hear from people who get over it.
I'm interested in what you said about coincidence. Care to elaborate? Any good reading to suggest on the subject? I'm interested.
Good luck in school. -

Wow, you just touched on a huge subject for me. I hope I'm the only one on the board who will say anything similar to this.
I remember watching a movie where someone says to someone else "Those things will kill you" and the reply is "You want to live forever?"
It just stayed with me. I have suicide issues. I smoke knowing it will kill me because that's the idea. Actually, that constant in my head is what drove me to this board. Therapy and digging in the past led me to believe that the JW upbringing is somewhat responsible for my hopes for an early demise.
Of course, I can't explain to my son that I keep smoking because I actually want to die. Because it makes me feel like I am telling god that I have control. I know that quitting will be difficult, but without any desire to live past 40 or 50 I have found it to be impossible.
This will sound crazy, but I think that when I can give up smoking, I'll be able to say I'm over the whole jw thing.
