let me start = "kiss" stood for knights in satans service, "ac/dc" was anti-christ devils children.
"hotel california" was demonic who knew!
"yummy yummy yummy i've got love in my tummy.
Ozzy Osbourne was the devil incarnate. Now that I know him, he was just drugged and drunk. No demons involved.
Many many years ago I remember seeing an interview with Ozzy osbourne and the subject came up about his alledged devil worship. His reply, paraphrased, was, "I can't hardly conjure myself outta bed how am I gonna conjure up a evil sprite"
As for disapproved rock albums, especially at Bethel. We just found old safe album jackets and put the records in them. Chances of the records being pulled out was nil.
the important and popular danish film, "world's apart," which was shown at the berlin film festival recently, was selected for the tribecca film festival and will be screened publicly (with english subtitles) five times during the coming weeks at village east cinemas and amc village vii in new york.
please pass the word.
this film depicts the story of a witness girl who steps outside of her religious community by falling in love with a "worldly" young man.
i was told today by a heavyweight elders wife, both of whom were at bethel for many years and are very well connected to the brooklyn brass, that all brooklyn bethel operations will be moved to wallkill and patterson.
in fact, there is a very exclusive walk-through next week for some of the top real estate investors/developers who will see all the properties, starting with the sands, and its lobby has now been remodeled to look just like a high-end hotel..................just fyi.................................oompa
I wonder what the congregations in NYC will do without the constant Bethel presence?Blondie
That is a good question and something I have wondered for quite a while. When I was at Bethel, one year I did not go to the Gilead graduation, so I was the only Bethelite at the meeting. I noticed quite a change, to my surprise. People that never answered or seldom did were far more expressive. At that point I wondered how NYC congos would fare if all Bethelites disappeared. Grant it, that was quite awhile ago and only a one time observation, but still... As for Elders who have "power/inner circle" issues, that will be more interesting to see where the dust settles there.
Then there is the other side of the coin. There are far fewer congos in the rural areas so congos will see a much higher Bethel:Publisher ratio that will be interesting to see what differences, if any, that will make.

accusing the witnesses of targeting society's weaker elements, including new immigrants, the poor and the handicapped, critics blast what they call the group's devious recruitment methods.
"they've mapped out all of israeli society and then target segments that don't get attention elsewhere," said cohen.
I noticed it says "Missionary work is not legal here" Was there not a real big uproar a year or so ago about a young Christian group there preaching and 2 of the group had been arrested?
Many years ago a Gilead graduate was sent to Israel. The persons picture was not in the Watchtower magazine at the time nor counted as the number of graduates. The person went in-country as a college student and was "placed" in a boarding house run by a sister. This person dropped comments about the world that opened a dialog. A study was started with the Gilead graduate and was actually "baptised" to go through the whole process right up to elder and beyond.
i thought it would be useful if we discussed ways we have tried to budget better and also save, and even be greener, if that is something you care about.
i have noticed substantial differences in my saving and budgeting and i am hoping maybe we can learn from each other.. food.
i did a sum of all the money i was spending going out a few days a week for lunch, and i just realized how much i could save by making my lunch and buying soups on sale for lunch for the week.
- Bottled water. I realized the water was bad, but I just absolutely stopped buying bottled water. Let's not even talk about the fact that some of the bottled water is just faucet water with a label, but you can get water just as good by getting a filter on your refrigerator or getting a brita filter. I use both and I saved a bundle.
I just started doing this. I am very surprised how much better my tap water is. This has been a good cost saving move.
my jw niece quit college a short time ago and didn't finish her degree, which she seems very excited about and took on a menial job, which she doesn't too happy about, according to my father.
my father (not a jw) is wondering what happened and if it is possibly something "the church" is now promoting.
when my daughter went to a 2 year college i had some negative comments from those in the congo.
What is interesting is that the WTBTS has paid for several Bethelites to go to college. The WTBTS has paid for several lawyers in Canada (Shane Brady, Glen Howe) to go to law school according to a Canadian secular weekly magazine. There are internet rumors that a child of a Governing Body member has gone to Columbia law school. There are alot of confirmed stories that the WTBTS has paid for Bethelites to get degrees in all sorts of fields.
Think about it: They discourage higher education among the rank and file, but they use the donations of the rank and file to pay for college for the upper echelon of the WTBTS. I am not sure what to call this practice but I would not call it consistent.
When I was at Bethel in the 70's a number of guys I worked with had obtained their college degrees before coming JW's. All these eventually got transferred to the better jobs, which were the technical/office jobs. That observation was not lost on the rest of us. It also made a few of us, upon exit from Bethel, start college to get those degrees to make sure we also got the better jobs.
I never missed a meeting...even when I didn't go...
the most beautiful cardinal just hit the window in our den.
he's breathing, i can't tell if anything is broken.
i'd check a little closer but i don't want to get pecked or something.
I know in one case from years ago a business had this problem. It was suggested that they use cutouts (silhouettes) of birds that are natural predatory rivals of the birds hitting the window. Apparently it works or great reduces window strikes
do you believe we're in a recession?
As Stated by DanTheman:
I have managed to save a small pile of money over the past few years, simply because (and I hope this doesn't come off as holier than thou) I refuse to get ensnared in the consumerism trap. I don't have an ipod or a gee-whiz cell phone. My computer is an old Pentium III model and my monitor is a 15" CRT model that is over 10 yrs old. I buy my clothes off the clearance racks, and am far from being a paragon of fashion. My car is old and rusting. My TV set is a 25 incher that I bought back in 1996 or so and I will use it until it gives out, which I imagine will be at least another 10 years.
And you know what? Sometimes I feel guilty for being so frugal! Like I'm being a bad American for not running up debt by spending loads of money I don't have on clothes and electronic gizmos and new cars and the like. It seems like the economy has become dependent on the very things that are causing it's downfall.
Then again, my frugality may be tied to my ever self-flagellating & resentful nature, lol.
========================================================================
I am right there with you in frugal catagory. My tv is 21yrs old. My home computer I got for free probably 10yrs ago. I still wear clothes that i've had for 10-15 yrs. My company buys and pays for my cell phone, the last one I had for 6 yrs. Was ordered to get a newer one. Argued that the old one worked, but lost argument. I use all things to the bitter end... Any purchase thats not an absolute necessity I will spend days, if not weeks, debating if I should buy. I do my best to avoid debt like the plague seeing I learned my lesson the hard way in the past.
I'm not poor. My income level is very good. I have really good insurance, benefits and have a company supplied car. I also realize that my job could disappear tomorrow, which it almost did a good number of years ago. I always pay myself first with savings. My rainy day account is substantial, which has been 10 yrs in the making-also thats why my clothes and tv are the ages they are at.
Its not easy, in my case not to spend, because I can afford to. I realize there are no guarentees in life, especially when it comes to work. My job and/or benefits could change at any time. I try to live like I can't afford those extra things in lfe, just in case it does happen.
