I knew two Bethelites that started college within a matter of weeks of leaving Bethel. When they graduated they were still active, but that was many years ago. No idea of current status.

Volunteering at Assemblies.
by LouBelle income on i know many of you did.. i used to volunteer because 1. my mum forced me as a kid, then 2. i wisend up to the fact i'd miss quite a bit of the session if i volunteered.. many hours were spent cleaning stadiums, the loos (vomit), picking up litter.
in the days when they served meals at the assemblies we peeled potatoes, chopped onions, cooked, served the food / cooldrinks.
took the tickets.

And if you were in full time service, such as pioneering you got to count hours for "working" at assemblies. It was an easy way to make up or create hours...

What Stupid Rules Did Your Congregation Have?
by minimus inwe had a few.. no gum in your mouth ever!
the elders found some gum on the carpet so gum chewing was banned.. disfellowshipped ones should sit quietly in the rear of the hall.. you had to get at least the congregation's average in order to share in the privilege of mowing the lawn!.

No moustaches. Once when I was counseled for having a moustache I pointed out that most of the elders in the neighbouring congregation had moustaches. The elder replied "Yes, but you don't see any elders in OUR congregation with moustaches. Besides, most of them are Italian and it's part of their culture"
I got nailed on the moustache issue also...
Elder pulls me aside. Did you see the picture in magazine? I forgot now if it was the watchtower or awake. The picture was a scientist standing at a chalkboard proving evolution. The pictured scientist had a moustache.
Ergo. If you wore a moustache you believed in evolution.
My first Epiphany that some elders really do have their head up their a$$...in this case a Bethel elder

So, you blew your chance to go to college because of JWs? Don't give up!
by cabasilas ini got the jw "bug" as a teenager.
witnesses called at our door when i was nearly 11. my parents are deaf and i was the oldest hearing child, the default interpreter for them in that era before relay services and professional interpreters.
they had no interest in jws, but it started to spark an interest in me.

Recently I was talking to a friend of mine. We were at Bethel together. Not sure of his status, its a subject we seem to avoid cryptically. Anyway, whatever his status is he went back to college and completed his bachelors in his early 50's and is several months into a masters program in finance. He stated that no matter what your age or money circumstance is, it is well worth the effort to do. At the very least for personal satisfaction.

BETHELITES - Whatever Became of?
by Black Man ini often times wonder what happened to certain bethelites that i ran around with during my 1990s tenure there.
while there are still a few left there, the greater majority of them aren't there for various reasons (marriage, disillusionment, left the borg, etc).
a couple of cats i wonder about - there was one brother who i believe was from kansas, who got his fingers cut off in a printing press.

Whatever happened to Olie Riley?
He was a very popular guy in Brooklyn back in the 70's, I think he went though Gilead and was sent to some place like Fiji. Gymbob
There is a long forgotten name. I remember him as well when I was there.
DF: "Mark nevejans" I worked with his brother in the garage. If I remember correctly mark got married and moved to a bethel in south america (I think.)
That would be Ecuador... his bro Roger became a CO last I heard.Mark Nevejans had the same fate as numerous others during the 1980's apostasy uprising at Bethel and was exited out. In Sept-2000 Mark died from brain cancer that he battled for two years.

Lifetime Earnings Soar with EducationLifetime Earnings Soar with Education
Masters degree worth $2.5 million income over a lifetime
How much is higher education worth in cold hard money? A college master's degree is worth $1.3 million more in lifetime earnings than a high school diploma, according to a recent report from the Commerce Department's Census Bureau.
The report titled "The Big Payoff: Educational Attainment and Synthetic Estimates of Work-Life Earnings" (.pdf) reveals that over an adult's working life, high school graduates can expect, on average, to earn $1.2 million; those with a bachelor's degree, $2.1 million; and people with a master's degree, $2.5 million.
Persons with doctoral degrees earn an average of $3.4 million during their working life, while those with professional degrees do best at $4.4 million.
"At most ages, more education equates with higher earnings, and the payoff is most notable at the highest educational levels," said Jennifer Cheeseman Day, co-author of the report.
The figures are based on 1999 earnings projected over a typical work life, defined as the period from ages 25 through 64.
Americans staying in school longer
Along with the financial data, the report also shows that more Americans are staying in school longer than ever before. In 2000, 84 percent of American adults age 25 and over had at least completed high school and 26 percent continued to earn a bachelor's degree or higher, both all-time highs."Glass Ceiling" on earnings still intact
The report also shows that while more American women than men have received bachelor's degrees every year since 1982, men with professional degrees may expect to cumulatively earn almost $2 million more than their female counterparts over their work lives.Additional highlights from the report show:
- In 1999, average annual earnings ranged from $18,900 for high school dropouts to $25,900 for high school graduates, $45,400 for college graduates and $99,300 for the holders of professional degrees (medical doctors, dentists, veterinarians and lawyers).
- Over a work life, earnings for a worker with a bachelor's degree compared with one who had just a high school diploma increase by about $1 million for non-Hispanic Whites and about $700,000 for African Americans; Asians and Pacific Islanders; and Hispanics.
- Currently, almost 9-in-10 young adults graduate from high school and about 6-in-10 high school seniors go on to college the following year.
A separate report released last year (What's It Worth? Field of Training and Economic Status: 1996) said among people with bachelor's degrees, those working full time in engineering earned the highest average monthly pay ($4,680), while those with education degrees earned the lowest ($2,802) in 1996.

BTW: I've heard from 2 sources (one firsthand, one secondhand) that Bethel is laying off "the crazies". This is telling in many ways. One: The local congregations are getting "blessed" by hard-core loonies that even Bethel didn't want. And second: You can actually overdo "holier than thou" at HQ.
Having served time at Bethel I can say that the above is a true statement. While there in the 70's guys like that sometimes crashed and burned depending where they worked/workmates. So they at times left . Todays Bethel, from what I gather here, appears not even to be close to what it was back then. I would hate to think what some SR's (self righteous) attitudes are like now when they leave.

The guy in the front row of the group photo of pressroom boys with his hand in his pocket is Eddie Hernandez, you're probably thinking of another hispanic bro from CA named Rueben Teran, they hung around alot together.
Gymbob,
Right you are. After I left Bethel, actually ran into Rueben while in California on vaction. Back then, 81/82?, he was working for a beer distributor...
Eddie, Rueben, and Rico used to hang around together...
Thanks for the clarification
btw...Richard Chambers... from Michigan? Detroit area? worked with him for awhile....
