Birthdays
by baltar447 inso wife and i are kinda in limbo lately, wanting to fade, but hard to commit to fading 100%.
we have howver decided to do a little birthday thing for my son soon(cake but no candles, but did get him a present and card), and we haven't really talked to the kids about how we feel lthat birthdays are no different from anniversaries despite what the society prints.
any ideas on what to say to the kids or how to deal with it ourselves?.

Baltar, quite simply the same logic the org uses against B-days can be used to ban anniversaries- pagan origins, glory to one person or a couple in the case of anniversaries...no record of 1st century Christians observing wedding anniversaries...probably don't need to get a whole lot deeper for young children. PM me if you want to talk more.

Why This Atheist Respects the Jehovah's Witnesses-And why other Atheists should too!
by RaustBD ini'm an atheist, and i'd like to take some time to talk about why i hold a great deal of respect for the jehovah's witnesses, and some words of encouragement that may put an end to the ridicule and disrespect you seem to get from, well, all sorts of people.. .
i never gave this kind of criticism a second thought: i knew nothing about you, and i figured you were just another fringe group of christianity.
i now feel terrible about this, and i wish to apologize for my (admittedly never spoken) disrespect.

RaustBD: While I do feel that many of the Watchtower's stances on various issues (such as the scientific theory of evolution) are problematic, I can honestly say that I'm not bothered too much.
My reply: Why would this not bother you? Most Atheists I have known have been bothered by the JW stance on this.

So what is your view on the JW belief that those who are not a part of their group, faithfully serving as the leadership demand they will be personally struck dead by God?

by stuckinlimbo inhi i need some help to show that the scriptures used to uphold the disfellowshipping policy are actually only meant to apply to those that deny the christ blah blah.

1 Corinthians 5:11
11 But now I am writing YOU to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man.
Ok, not eat. In the ancient Jewish culture having a meal with someone was considered an close, intimate situation...unlike just having a meal with someone at Burger King today. I do not see any indication of a shunning here. COmapre with 2nd Thes 3:14 and 15
14 But if anyone is not obedient to our word through this letter, keep this one marked, stop associating with him, that he may become ashamed. 15 And yet do not be considering him as an enemy, but continue admonishing him as a brother.
See the words in 1 Cor 5:11 "quit mixing in company"? See in 2 thes 3:14 'stop associating with'?? The NWT translates the identical Greek term differently so one does not make the connection between the two texts. They then claim that 1 Cor is speaking of serious sins while 2 Thes is speaking of lesser sins. Why?? Because 2 Thes refutes their disfellowshipping policy in verse 15- to not consider the person and enemy and continue admonishing them as a brother. Exactly what in 2 Thes indicates that it is speaking of lesser sins???

Comapre Acts 20: 20 while I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house.
With Acts 2;46:
46 And day after day they were in constant attendance at the temple with one accord, and they took their meals in private homes and partook of food with great rejoicing and sincerity of heart
The NWT translates the identical greek term as house to house in Acts 20 (and insists this means door to door preaching as done by JWs) while transalting the same term as in private homes in 2:46- where the disciples obviously did not knock at each door on a street to take communion. The NWT proves that Kat Oiken (the Greek term) does not necessarily mean what they are claiming it means in Acts 20:20, and translate differently to conceal this and hope one does not make the connection. They have a habit of doing that to verses that contradict their theology.
