I was shopping at Robinson's May the other day and was stunned when the cashier asked a customer, who had written a check, for her birthdate!! The older woman rattled it off as the girl writes it down on the check. I asked the cashier why and how they could ask such a thing? She gave some lame reasoning about check writers and it's just their store policy. That was a new one to me. Stepping to another register, I asked another cashier and she insisted it was part of their training and they need to ask. Seems to me like it would be illegal in this day of ID theft to get that personal.

"three pound beauty"
For Witnesses that stay, that is all their brain will ever be.
Because an addiction to The End makes sure it really is.
For those that discover our brains can't be measured by weight, welcome to a world of potential.

What one sentence could you say to a JW that would stick with them?
by AlmostAtheist inyou've probably heard sentences that stuck with you.
quotes, one-liners.
you hear them and they make so much sense or touch you so personally at the time that they become part of you.

I saw an elder of my former congregation at a warehouse store, wearing sunglasses (inside) and reggae-patterned shirt (Rasta?), other glasses hanging off his collar, who saw me but didn't say "Boo". Outside I saw him loading his truck and approached. After a reluctant and brief conversation with me (wherein things I said were ambiguous), the last thing I said was: "You should start using your brain."
Pretty much sums it up.

TESTING the results of two different ways of thinking
by Terry inmankind has had a pretty good track record of tackling the problems of life on earth.
different folks have tried different strokes.
you might say that life has been the crucible for testing an idea as to efficacy and the legacy of any idea is how well it worked.. .

So long as you kiss me - (and) the world around us shatters
How little it matters - how little we know
As vast and complex the universe we live in is, there will always be something more to learn, something learned to be discarded, but what remains, what has been the constant throughout history, is love. And so, each time I'm out on my bike, climbing a mountain, each time I'm with my wife, using as much energy, I feel life. And I feel alive.
Whether this is mystical, practical, or a combination does not matter (to me) as much as the experience. To me, that is the beauty of life.
The experience removes the cobwebs that get in the way of feeling this.

While watching the benefit concert "Shelter from the Storm", I really enjoyed hearing Neil Young sing his new song "When God Made Me".
Here's the link to listen it:http://www.thesongdog.de/rust/sounds/ny_20050702_wgmm.mp3
Here are the lyrics:
WHEN GOD MADE ME
Was he thinking about my country,
or the colour of my skin?
Was he thinking about my religion,
and the way I worshipped him?
Did he create just me in his image,
or every living thing?
When God made me.
When God made me.
Was he planning only for believers,
or for those who just had faith?
Did he envision all wars
that were fought in his name?
Did he say there was only one way
to be close to him?
When God made me.
When God made me.
Did he give me the gift of love
to say who I could choose?
When God made me.
When God made me.
When God made me.
Did he give me the gift of voice
so some could silence me?
Did he give me the gift of vision
not knowing what I might see?
Did he give me the gift of compassion
to help my fellow man?
When God made me.
When God made me.
When God made me.Is this Neil's requiem to religion?
An ode to individualism and private interpretation of life perhaps?
If so, let it be the not-too-soon death of elitism and fundamentalist groups so we can all enjoy the only life we will ever have.
"Imagine" that.

Of course Witnesses cannot deal with things going on in the world in a pragmatic, or practical, way. They instead attribute some kind of sign or meaning to such occurences and how it all supports their prophecies. It must give some kind of comfort to know you don't know, or choose not to know the things you don't know.
I'm really curious to know if any have brought that thought up to active family members/friends for a response? The thought of it must just warm their heart. I know, if I was still in, I'd be tossing that around.
As far as their idea of Armageddon and having billions, not thousands, of bodies strewn about (much less how their god can selectively kill some and leave others still standing), if they were actually there, they wouldn't know where to begin, and they'd be thinking, "Damn, there's no more windows to wash, no lawns to mow, Jehober killed all the people that know what to do now."
And then a pandemic disease will overtake any survivors before Jehober, unable to change a universe he set in motion, watches as the last standing Witness expires on a rotting Earth.
To not think about this is to put yourself in the same position as those that chose to stay in New Orleans.

Eddy Merckx 5 Time winner of the Tour de France; those familiar with cycling will probably consider him the greatest cyclist that ever lived.
I was at the bicycle industry trade show in Long Beach 30 years ago and he signed "The Fabulous World of Cycling". Frank Zane
Bodybuilder; had one of the most perfectly proportioned bodies on the planet. He inspired a young me to lift weights. Saw him at the Mr. Orange County Bodybuilding Show as guest poser, doing his routine to Pink Floyd music.
The only one to beat Arnold in competition (Mr. Universe).

The WTS is not the driving force behind any innovations or even "freedom" to citizens of any country.
It is not without reason a Justice of the Supreme Court said it is too bad we have to protect the rights of an group that does not guarantee these same rights of its members.
Who is looking out for Witnesses rights?
I totally agree with Terry, very well summarized; the "Society" is not democratic or even useful to civilization. There is nothing we would be missing if they never existed, except this board.
