Hi Ranchette. I remember you as if we were together yesterday and it's been over seven years. Yikes, where has the time gone. I'm so happy that you have such a great marriage and he's a "sweetheart." Lots of water has passed under the bridge this past seven years and step by step we are wacking away at WT's arrogance and deviousness with good results. Hope the kids are doing well and have settled lives. I bet your son is taller than you are now and I'm sure your daughter is a beauty. She was so pretty when she was a young teenager.
Joe sends his greetings. Plese know that we have fond memories of your hospitality and kindness.

The Broadcaster - WTS Endorsed-Must Read *NEW*
The Broadcaster was a four page pamphlet published weekly in the early 1920s. The first page had short articles such as the Golden Age did. On page 2 & 3 there was always an article attributed to Judge J. F. Rutherford. Page 4 once again had misc. short articles.
Sometimes The Broadcaster was published at 18 Concord St., Brooklyn, NY, by F. E. Houston; or at 257 Sixth St., Oakland, Cal, by V. R. Molin; or at 5315 W. 25th St., Chicago, Ill, by M. E. Woodley; or at 16th & I'ine St, St. Louis, Mo, by E. L. Wagner.
The Contributors were always the same people:
Judge J. F. Rutherford - President IBSA
C. J. Woodworth, Editor Golden Age
J. H. Hemery British Correspondent
C. C. Binkele European CorrespondentThere are 20 issues of these rare pamphlets provided for you to peruse or download on Watchtower Documents, LLC. Here is an example of what's on page one of The Broadcaster, May 21, 1925 issue.
The Broadcaster
Vol. 1. No. 41 Thursday, May 21, 1925 Brooklyn, N. Y.
Entered as Second Class Matter, Aug. 11, 1924 , at Post Office at Brooklyn, N. Y. under Act of March S, 1879.WHAT KIND OF A COUNTRYDO THE PEOPLE REALLY WANT?
DOCTOR CADMAN SEES
CRIME TRIUMPHANTDoctor Cadman, head of the Federal
Council of Churches, says that there
have been more crimes of violence in
the United States in the last three
years than in the previous quarter of
a century, that America is now the
crime center of the world, that the criminal
bids fair to be supreme here very
soon and that then the honest citizen
will not stand a chance. A boys’ club
was just uncovered in Chicago which
no boy could join until he had committed
at least one burglary.
THE PHONOFILM IS
A SUCCESSThe Phonofilm, which pictures or
reproduces a person engaged in making
a speech, as well as the speech or
music itself, is pronounced a success.
This invention, the work of Dr. Lee
De Forest, was a dream of Thomas A.
Edison more than ten years ago, and
has been the goal of inventors since.
A speech of the President was recently
photofilmed by this method, and the
reproduction in New York a week later
was -realistic. During the reproduction
the audience broke into involuntary
applause.
PEOPLE DEMAND
THE FILTHThe true standard of news distribution
is to circulate the things that are
true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of
good report, so that the people may
think on these things. The Fayetteville,
North Carolina, Observer, tried
this policy for one week, omitting all
crime news. At the end of the period
the subscribers by a vote of sixty to
one demanded a return to the old
method of publishing all the news of
wretchedness and crime, so that they
might have it.
GENERAL BUTLER’S
LOSING FIGHTIn his great fight to clean up the
city of Philadelphia General Butler
has proven that the public in general
do not want things cleaned up, but
that openly or secretly their sympathies
are with the lawless. General
Butler started put with the statement
that he would clean the city up in 48
hours. After a year and a half of
faithful effort, he admits that the forces'
arrayed against righteousness and
honesty are too great to be overcome,
and he is ready to go back tooths
WHAT UNCLE SAM SUPPLIES
THE PRESIDENTBesides his salary of $75,000, and
an expense allowance of $25,000, Uncle
Sam supplies the President with free
servants, free rent, free furniture, free
automobiles, transportation by land
or water with all expenses paid, the
free use of the Marine Band when he
wants it, and one annual formal dinner
to the diplomatic corps. The President
pays all other food bills. As the White
House family and servants number
forty persons, that is no small item.

Writing an Op-Ed Post for the New York Times
by Band on the Run ini posted on another thread that the ap report in the nyt was disappinting.
my thought is to write to the ombudsman or at least an editor.
the article was a joke when held against standard nyt reporting.. so many issues are raised that are applicable to all religions and wider societal concerns.

NYTimes carried the story on page A14 in today's hard copy newspaper, Monday, June 18th. The story was not written by Laurie Goodstein, but it was the AP story that was making the rounds.
Band on the Run, if you want to PM me, we can discuss doing a op-ed.

I'll find out how long for you JW Gonebad when I can and post it here. As far as I know, there wasn't anything that really slowed down the jury to come to their verdict. Maybe some day a jury member will talk about what went on in the jury room.

Interesting Commentary in New Statesman Article About Candace Conti
by DT inhere is the article http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/world-affairs/2012/06/secrets-and-lies-have-no-place-when-dealing-child-abuse.
here are some quotes.. "jim mccabe, a lawyer for the jehovah's witness congregation, said that they plan to appeal the decision, contending that kendrick was just a member of the north fremont congregation, not a leader or pastor.
he said: "this is a tragic case where a member of a religious group has brought liability on the group for actions he alone may have taken."".

Yes, Candace is being protected. I heard that too many nutty folks are making threatening noise. Maybe some on blogs and discussion boards ought to tone down their negative remarks. New Stateman article follows:
Jehovah's Witnesses sing at a ceremony in France. Photograph: Getty Images
A legal landmark has been passed in the US, and not the good kind – the largest-ever jury verdict for a single victim in a religious child abuse case was handed down in California. Candace Conti, who was molested when she was nine and ten years old by a fellow member of the North Fremont Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, received $28 million in damages.
Recognition and reparation for such a horrible experience is surely a good thing, right? In part that is true – Conti has chosen to make her story public in the hope that “something good can come out of it”, she says . However, the case wasn’t just about Conti’s own experience, terrible as that undoubtedly was.
A substantial part of her allegations dealt with claims that the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York (the organisation that oversees the Jehovah’s Witnesses) had adopted a policy in 1989 that instructed congregation leaders to keep child abuse allegations secret. In Conti’s case, this meant that when her abuser, Jonathan Kendrick, was convicted in 2004 of molesting another girl, the elders at the North Fremont Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses did nothing to prevent him coming into contact with other kids at the church.
The sheer scale of the damages awarded to Conti reflect the gravity of this situation. While Kendrick has been ordered topay 60 per cent of the $7 million compensatory damages, the Watchtower Society must cover the remaining 40 per cent of the compensatory damages and all of the $21 million punitive damages.
Over and over again, we’ve had stories of Catholic bishops and other office-holders in the Roman Catholic church refraining from reporting allegations of abuse to civil authorities. Now, this unfortunate legal landmark demonstrates that this behaviour has occurred in at least one other religious institution, and that it won’t go unpunished when it is exposed.
Jim McCabe, a lawyer for the Jehovah’s Witness congregation, said that they plan to appeal the decision, contending that Kendrick was just a member of the North Fremont congregation, not a leader or pastor. He said: “This is a tragic case where a member of a religious group has brought liability on the group for actions he alone may have taken.”
Had the secrecy around Kendrick’s 2004 conviction not been put in place, that might have been a semi-valid point – demonising a whole faith and community because of individual incidents is absolutely not what this is about. That said, it’s the idea that a church-wide policy enforced the silence that is so disturbing. Traumatic as this case will certainly have been for many involved, part of me can’t help hoping that it sets a precedent and we see many more like it come to light, until every institution, religious or otherwise, understands that hiding things like this is much, much worse than exposing them – for everyone.

I don't know anyone who knows and I sure don't. I found out in 1997 that they were settling out-of-court lawsuits when Harry Peloyan, the Awake! editor, wrote me a letter and in one paragraph mentioned to me that in the past the Society settled many "megabuck lawsuits" out-of-court. It was the content of that letter that made me completely close the door to the WT once and for all.
If someone wants to know if there has been a settlement made by a plaintiff with WT in your area, go to your court house and ask to see any documents with Watch Tower or Watchtower in the name of the lawsuit. In some states it can be done using the computer, but in small towns, not so.
I would guess that's the only way the number of settlements could be compiled.
There were two lawyers at Bethel working full time on domestic violence lawsuits and child abuse lawsuits, William Bell and Carolyn Wah. They made the deals and paid out the money. The majority of victims or their parents agreed to take on average in the 1990s, $2,500. These were desperate people who needed money to pay for their child's therapy.
Even today, in a (secret, but not to me) recent out-of-court settlement, the victims settled because they were desperate for money so they could get therapy for depression, etc., and just couldn't take a chance that they would lose if their case went before a jury. That's what WT has always counted on before Candace Conti's lawsuit. They just weren't prepared that she would go all the way to jury and it's successful conclusion on June 13th and 14th. This is why WT attorneys were shocked out of their wits when they lost in such a big way.

Watchtower's April 9 BOE Confidentiality Letter - Child Abuse - Did Jane Doe lawsuit play a major part?
by SweetBabyCheezits ini'd bet my left.... pinky toe that the wt's monster 4/9 confidentiality letter was put out as a direct result of the jane doe/candace vs wt case as they were preparing to go to trial.
there had already been a year of legal proceedings - surely the wt knew the shit was about to hit the fan.. thanks goes to atlantis for posting the boe letters originally as pdfs.
the person that a restraining order is a personal legal matter that does not involve the congregation.. thereafter, the elders should call the legal department immediately for direction..

FYI, the April 2012 letter didn't play as big a part in the trial as did the 1989 letter because it was in effect when Candace was molested. Mr. Simon was sent the April letter, which validated the "secrecy" issue that Mr. Simons was pressing, but it couldn't be used in the way the 1989 letter was used.
