2014 SNAP Conference Report
Posted on August 20, 2014 by Barbara
From August 1 – 3, Kerry Louderback Wood* and I attended the 2014 Annual SNAP** Conference, which was also its Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Celebration, in Chicago, Illinois.
This organization was founded in 1988 as a self-help support group for those who were sexually violated, primarily by Catholic clergy. Early on, SNAP founders learned that church officials were more interested in protecting predators and their reputations, not in helping victims, just like the officials of Jehovah’s Witnesses were and are still doing.
Why This Undertaking
Our mission in attending the SNAP Conference was to bring greater attention to the plight of Jehovah’s Witness (JW) survivors of child sexual abuse primarily committed by elders and ministerial servants—the clergy of Jehovah’s Witnesses—and to inform the public how this religion’s beliefs inadvertently protect Witness pedophiles.

Along with her husband, Angela Montgomery became interested in JWs in 1991 in Smyrna, TN, located near Murfreesboro (a town outside of Nashville). They were baptised that year or early 1992 and attended the Smyrna, TN congregation. She was divorced from her husband in 1997. He disassociated himself from the JWs in 1996 after researching their history. Montgomery lived in Murfreesboro, TN from 1997-2002 and was an active Witness there. She moved back to Raleigh, NC where she was from originally. Later, an elder from the Smyrna congregation who she was still in touch with recommended that she move to Oregon. She attended the same Kingdom Hall as Whitney Heichel, the young JW that was murdered last year. The elders in Oregon were contacted by Tennessee law officials about Montgomery and they acknowledged that she is a JW. In addition, Angela married a JW in Oregon about three years ago, hence the name, Montgomery.

DCS is in trouble in the state of Tennessee apart from the Montgomery situation. It was reported that 105 children died in 2012 that had some type of prior contact with DCS - either the child was in state custody or had been reported to the agency as a victim of abuse or neglect. In 2013, the agency made some reforms after a new commissioner was appointed.
The following is a special report about DCS:
Since September, an ongoing series by The Tennessean has uncovered numerous problems at the Tennessee Department of Children's Services, the state agency charged with investigating allegations of abuse and neglect, operating the state's foster care system and rehabilitating the state's juvenile offenders.
The department has been under federal court pressure for a decade to improve its care of children, but improvements slowed in the past two years, and child advocates say problems uncovered by The Tennessean may be endangering the department's ability to serve the state’s most vulnerable children.
They include missed calls at a child abuse hotline, a spike in violence in youth detention facilities, high turnover among senior DCS leaders and a $27 million computer system that DCS workers struggle to use to document their investigations and that led to missed payments to foster care families and agencies, and a failure to accurately report on the children in its care.
DCS also struggled to provide accurate information on the number of children who died, or nearly died, after having some contact with the agency. The agency revised those numbers upwards at least five times since September.

WASHINGTON Jim Lewis and Jim Springer were identical twins raised apart from the age of 4 weeks. When the twins were finally reunited at the age of 39 in 1979, they discovered they both suffered from tension headaches, were prone to nail biting, smoked Salem cigarettes, drove the same type of car and even vacationed at the same beach in Florida.
The culprit for the odd similarities? Genes.
Genes can help explain why someone is gay or straight, religious or not, brainy or not, and even whether they're likely to develop gum disease, one psychologist explains.
Such broad-ranging genetic effects first came to light in a landmark study Minnesota Twin Family Study conducted from 1979 to 1999, which followed identical and fraternal twins who were separated at an early age.

Reported by Dennis Ferrier - email
MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -
A young Rutherford County man said his mother committed unspeakable crimes, and no one believed him until 10 years after the fact.
When Alan's parents got divorced, he said his mother, Angela Montgomery, would do terrible sexual things to him, his two brothers and sister when they would visit.
Channel 4 News has chosen not to use Alan's full name to protect his younger siblings.
"I think she is a sociopath," Alan said. "She doesn't feel guilt or remorse. As long as she gets her kicks, she doesn't care who she hurts."
Alan said he first told the Department of Children's Services what his mother was doing to him in 1997, when he was 8 years old.
"I was terrified, not only embarrassed," Alan said. "I didn't know if they would believe me or if they could stop her."
Over the five years Alan said he reported his mother, he said nothing would happen. Alan would then say nothing was happening and then break down and tell DCS he was being molested and raped. He said he reported his mother to DCS at least a half-dozen times.
"It gets very depressing after a while to put your faith in somebody and expect them to keep you safe and then it doesn't happen over and over again," Alan said. "You get hurt by having trust over and over again and never having trust reward."
Alan, now 24, said it ended in 2003 when the children moved to supervised visits after his mother violated the court's visitation schedule.
In 2012, Alan and his younger sister decided to pursue criminal charges. They went to Murfreesboro police with some hesitation.
"On one level it's embarrassing, but on another it was nice to have someone take me seriously for once," Alan said.
Murfreesboro police put together an investigation that led to a 40-page indictment, including charges of rape, incest and abuse. Montgomery faces multiple felonies.
"They're really like my guardian angels to get in and get this done," Alan said.
State Rep. Sherry Jones wants DCS to answer why this took so long.
"It's something that should have been addressed 10 years ago," Jones said. "There is no reason for a child to be hurt and left in that same place and be hurt again and again and again."
DCS spokesperson Rob Johnson said his department cannot comment.
"Because the case involves details from so long ago and because it's still under criminal investigation, the department cannot comment at this time," Johnson said.
