Yes, Leolaia. The series of articles entitled, "Women Deserving of Respect" was in the July 8, 1992 Awake! magazine.
I looked back at my notes tonight to see how I came to make that mistake. I had listed the June 22, 1990 Awake! along with the name of the article I had also contributed some material to, above the July 8, 1992 Awake!, "Women Deserving of Respect" and my eyes fell upon the wrong date when I was typing. Thanks for finding that mistake.
(I think I need to send you my material for editing before I post it.)

When we left Bethel at the end of 1993, Kathleen Apltauer worked in the Purchasing Dept. at 25 Columbia Heights (Main Offices) Interestingly, Robert Batko worked in that department too and we heard that the organization was paying his way through law school. He was studying to be a trust and real estate attorney.

We love your passion, Seeker4. We're here to help in any way possible, although maybe we're a little slow. It's Sunday, you know!
I posted the following on the newspaper's website:
Jehovah's Witnesses hope they will attract members by building an attractive "church" or Kingdom Hall on a major thoroughfare because they sure can't attract people in any other way. Perhaps they think a spacious new building will make it appear that their religion is popular and successful and new members will come despite international negative press reports concerning their religion. How about their hypocritical stance regarding the United Nations, which they loudly condemn? For ten years they were accredited as an "associated NGO" with the UN's Dept. of Public Information (DPI) until 2001 when they were caught and quickly requested to be removed. Hence, the UN "disassociated" them from the DPI. This is a religion that is hemorrhaging members for other reasons as well. Their policies protect pedophiles. They refuse to change the requirement that all accusations of child abuse are to be brought to their Elders instead of directly to the authorities. It is their practice for elders to act as judges to determine guilt or innocence on the basis of victims providing two witnesses to the act of sexual child abuse. To top it all, JWs are proud that they have won 37 of their 46 U.S. Supreme Court cases, assuring all Americans freedom of speech and assembly. Yet, they deny former members their right of freedom of worship by refusing to allow them to leave the religion with dignity, should they come to disagree with the religion's practices or doctrines. JWs disfellowship and demand that dissent be punished by extreme shunning even by close family members. This religion is a dangerous cult that controls every aspect of its members' lives. A beautiful meeting hall doesn't necessarily reflect that the people meeting there have "beautiful" spiritual values based on love.

Newspaper Article on JWs today - Write the paper - PLEASE!!
by Seeker4 intoday's sunday, claremont, nh eagle times has an interesting article on jws - inspired in part by a quick build kingdom hall going up this weekend in rockingham, vt.. here's the link: eagle times article october 23, 2005. i thought the article was good, but may have gone a bit easy on the witnesses.
no mention of witness shunning, the dateline expose, silentlambs, the blood issue, witness beliefs, etc.
also a bit confusing is the assertion of the tremendous growth rate at the same time that the article states that baptisms have dropped off 33% in the us since the mid-90s (holy shit!

Barb Anderson & Linda Jahn interviewed on Mark Furman Show, Spokane, WA
by AndersonsInfo inthought you'd like to know that today at 11 am pacific standard time, which was 1 pm tennessee time, i was interviewed for an entire hour by mark furman on 1510 kga, the big talker show, originating in spokane, wa, population 250,000. former jw, linda jahn, was interviewed from 12:00 to 1 pm.
all this attention to our cause originated from the disfellowshipping and shunning of joel jahn in davenport, wa, a few months back.
at that time joel wrote a letter to the local davenport newspaper explaining the wt disfellowshipping policy used against him because he spoke out against the religion's child abuse policies.

Linda Jahn called Cutaway Video Clips to order a tape of the interviews, and it will probably be sent in tomorrow's mail. It's VHS format, no typed transcript. However, as she is a transcriptionist (medical), Linda said it should not be too difficult to transcribe the program. It will just take some time (3 hour program). Linda should have it Monday or Tuesday and she said she might have some time Wednesday morning to listen and type. At least this way there will be available an electronic version of the transcript, and Joel might be able to download the audio onto the computer.

Blondie,
I'm going to try to get a copy of both written transcript and recording from Joel Jahn, because, if I know Joel, he's probably working on getting both as I write this.

Hi Everybody,
Thought you'd like to know that today at 11 AM Pacific Standard Time, which was 1 PM Tennessee time, I was interviewed for an entire hour by Mark Furman on 1510 KGA, The Big Talker Show, originating in Spokane, WA, population 250,000. His letter was not only published locally, but also reproduced in another WA town close to Davenport. It caused such a stir locally that the largest Spokane newspaper, Spokesman Review, became interested. A reporter interviewed the Jahns, and also Richard and Frances Rawe from Soap Lake, WA, a few weeks back. Happy to say, yesterday, a wonderful article appeared on the front page of the newspaper. Somebody already posted the article here on JWD.
In spite of short notice, the newspaper article caught the interest of the Mark Furman Show whose producer contacted Linda for a radio interview. The primary subject to be discussed was disfellowshipping and shunning, although, to Linda's knowledge, she has not been officially disfellowshipped, but yet is being shunned by her JW family and friends just because her husband was disfellowshipped.
I was asked to participate in the interview and an hour before the show went on the producer phoned. She said that I would definitely be interviewed tomorrow but the radio station let me listen on the phone to the entire interview with Linda, which was extraordinary. Linda is exceptionally articulate and intelligent and I was simply delighted with her responses to Mark's excellent questions. About five minutes before Linda's interview finished, the producer came back on the phone and told me that Mark wanted to interview me in about ten minutes. I have to say I was a bit flustered, but that Linda did an exceptional job softening up the listening audience for me, and I just picked up where she left off, although I went into the WT Society's child abuse policies from other angles.
Although Linda was being interviewed primarily because of the shunning policy, she was asked questions about a number of other things. One lady called in and asked about holidays, and another called in and wanted to know why JWs take blood fractions. However, Mark stayed mostly on the child abuse subject with me, although disfellowshipping and shunning certainly came up. In addition, a woman's place in the organization seemed to be of exceptional interest to Mark. It was apparent from Mark's commentary in between questions, that he sure doesn't like the Witness religion, attitude and policies, and he expressed his opinion in strong and very negative terms.
One lady called to ask how could she stop JWs from calling at her home and I mentioned two ways. She thought flying an American flag would keep Witnesses from entering her property, which is something I thought was novel, but told her it wouldn't work.
It's impossible to outline all of the discussion here so we will try to get a transcript of the program and post it on JWD in the future.
All in all, Mark Furman seemed to be very pleased with the interviews. He said that the interviews were very interesting, and if one could judge by all the phone calls that came in, the listening audience also was fascinated.

Minimus,
In the matter of confidentiality, I neither signed nor agreed to not divulge information about my Bethel experience when I left, nor was I asked to do so.
When I first discussed my assignment in the Writing Dept. with my new overseer, the only thing I remember said about this was not to discuss what I was working on with other Bethelites or even other staff in the Writing Dept. It was the same way when I was in the Engineering Dept. where I had previously worked.
Generally, Bethelites understand that they are not to pry into what other Bethelites specifically do in their office jobs. Even if the assignment is plumbing or the press room, etc., people can discuss their job assignment, but with reservation. A plumber would not disclose future plans of the Society. Press room people do not discuss what they are printing. Since JWs are accustomed to being lectured about confidential matters in the congregation, when they become Bethelites they usually don't have problems conforming to work-related confidentiality.
When I was in the Writing Dept., would I get in trouble if I discussed my work assignment? Why yes, I would get a warning. If I did it again, and if what I discussed caused much comment or complaint, I probably would have been transferred. However, Bethelites who have prestigious office jobs just know better than discuss their assignment, if they want to keep the job, that is! Of course, no one wants to be marked as loose lipped. It would mean no more advancement. The biggest disgrace for an office worker, who wants to stay in Bethel, is to be sent to a factory job or to housecleaning.

West70,
I was told that many loyal JW parents bring litigation against the WT Society over child abuse, but settle out of court and agree to a gag order. They don't want to "besmirch" Jehovah's name anyway, right? WT attorneys can offer as high as $150,000 to settle, I heard, but most times they offer a few thousand, and desperate parents, who need the money for medical bills and therapy for the child, often take whatever is offered.
Battered JW women also bring litigation against the Society when they do what the elders say and stay with their abusive husbands and end up injured. I heard of a very violent outcome when a loyal woman went back to her husband because the elders told her she had to. The husband broke his wife's leg. She sued the organization and settled out of court. Now you know why you don't hear of many civil lawsuits against the WT Society--because they never make it to juries.
