Yes, they'd like to have us forget their earlier teaching on this core teaching. Problem is, their earlier publications are now easily accessible.
I believe the going forth ended in 1844, that the tarrying ended in 1874, and therefore the cry pointing to 1874 was the midnight cry, and I believe it was consistent that the name "midnight cry" then disappeared from the publication, because, as stated at the time, it had done its work; but in harmony with that faith I also believe that Christ came in the character of a Bridegroom in 1874.

Those core teachings are the mortal soul, no hell, no trinity, paradise earth, Jehovah's name doctrines.
I've seen that bandied about here and there on this forum -- especially by JW apologists. I, however, don't recall WT listing those 5 doctrines as The Foundation of their teachings. More important, I don't recall a smidging of Bible support for it.
It's like saying, "Brothers and sisters -- yes, the Bible is large and difficult to comprehend. Not to worry because as long as you remember our 5 core teachings, they are the primary essence of our required knowledge. The rest is merely garnish, subject to our never-ending interpretation. first i must apologise for not posting an intro before and for the length of my intro, once you start it just keeps pouring out.
i grew up in what the jw org likes to call a divided home.
my mother had become a jw a few years before and was raising her 4 children of which i was the youngest in the truth.
Now that's a wonderful family reunion, right before our eyes. Good for the both of you, Little Sister and Nugget.

Hah -- the picture is funny. And the Sodomite flip-flops are indeed the kingpin of all them all. There are six different, sequentially opposite positions -- yes, no, yes, etc.
However, that link shows error in the 5th position in that it's not in date sequence (1982). This is the kind of thing that JW's love to pounce on, and with good reason.
Here is a link to an essay on flip-flops and has the Sodomite-WT pubs correctly in sequence. It includes other flips as well -- Superior Authorities, etc.

ps: There another great discussion going on right now, a clever chart, that shows six different WT positions on This Generation topic. The link is to page 2 of that thread where TruthSeeker presents his latest incarnation. The flip flop there shows position 5 reverting to position 2, an 81 year span.

A beautiful piece of work, TruthSeeker. I can see it now -- copies of this stuck to KH parking lot windshields in English-speaking countries.
Enlightening, too, is that suggested change you made which emphasizes that the 2008 position returned to an ancient 1927 stance. That teaching was part of the Rutherford era and the date difference represents a span of some 81 years.
Those six positions demonstrate how the Watchtower light flickers like a strobe on a disco dance floor. Revealingly, there are also six positions on their teaching of whether Sodomites will receive a resurrection -- yes, no, yes, no, yes, no!
