one of our elders organises regular trips for up to 12 rf to wine tasting events
You mean JW's still consume alcoholic beverages?
as has been stated before, large congregational get-togethers, cook-outs, baseball games, etc are now greatly discouraged by the society.
back in the 80s in san diego we had parties, night-time beach bonfires, pool parties and frequent restaurant meals with 10+ people.
do current jws seem to miss these sorts of social activities??

i was talking about this the other day to a friend that is an attorney for abused children and we started discussing strange family practices and how they affect children.
it was during that conversation that i remembered something i hadn't thought about in years - when i was 12 years old my step-father and mother tried to practice a form of shunning (disfellowshipping) in the family.
of course it wasn't my mother's idea, it was my neurotic mentally deranged stepfather that decided because my mother and i had disagreed about something in a silly judicial meeting, that i was to be shunned from the family.
Unless things have changed, I don't believe the Society supports personal disfellowshipping. Back when I was in the org, my ex-wife would not speak to her disfellowshipped dad after he was reinstated. She would not even allow him to see his grandkids. When I brought this up to the elders, they told her that she could not personally disfellowship someone regardless of her feelings toward them. Needless to say, it did not result in much change in her behavior as she believed the elders of his congregation made a serious error in reinstating him.
many religions other than jws believe we are at the "end times".
some individuals believe the earth will really be destroyed either by means of god or man in this century.. what's your take?.
Every generation since the time of Christ has had folks proclaiming it as part of the last days. Each generation always thinks things have gotten worse and life cannot go on much longer. If things had been getting worse at the rate people say, we should be nothing but a bunch of anarchist, murdering raping savages. In reality, history shows that humanity had gone through cycles of crime, pestilence and famine and I am sure that will be the case of our future. Even though most types of crime have going down over the past couple of decades, people still point out how bad things are getting.
One of the areas I hear people say has gotten much worse is sex crimes and crimes against children. However, when a little research is done, what is discovered is that the reporting of these crimes has become more common. My dad collected a bunch of Dallas area newspapers from the 1960's and 70's and a few years ago I was going through them and noticed that there were several articles on kids who were murdered or missing. These stories were just small articles on the front page or on the local section. Today, many of these might get national attention because of the way our various media types have become so much more intertwined.
i am now a reformed conspiracy theorist.
i have been wrong, i see it clearly now.. lee harvey oswald, acting alone, fired 3 bullets on november 22, 1963 wounding gov.
connally and killing president kennedy.
I too was into the conspiracy thing back in the day as it was more exciting to believe than the standard government explanation. Today I cannot think of any conspiracy theory that I believe as most of them are too preposterous. The ones who come up with these ideas are usually folks on the far right or far left of the political spectrum where emotion and idealogy blinds them to common sense.

When did the discouragement of these gatherings begin and what is logic?
so i was wondering........why do jw's insist that jesus was not put on a "cross" but on a stake?
Terry, each of your posts is better than the last. That bit was just awesome.
I agree. I find your posts most revealing.
went to a meeting after afew years, with mum.
a pioneer brother i know...first question; "so what car do you drive now?
" .
I saw a lot of this too in the congregation I attended. Unfortunately for me, my ex-wife was one of those who liked to dress expensively. Not that dressing that way is bad, but it often exceeded my income. She would often talk disparingly about those who wore "sun dresses" to the meeting. At gatherings the witnesses often divided themselves between the haves and have nots and usually the have nots felt that they were "closer to Jehovah".
your paying so much in gas right now that it has brought out national economy to its knees, and yet the thing that should upset you this most is this .... the goverment is doing "nothing!".
not one bill has been passed, plan implemented or action taken.
all talk and no action, which is why our government needs to be fired and replaced or this country is done.. .
Bush is apparently set to issue an executive order today that will open up all the offshore drilling - so now the run will be on, production increases, oil dives back down to 65 bucks and the Republicans will blame on the economic woes on the Democrats -
Bush is full of Bushshit. You cannot drill your way out of this issue. The U.S. should have been looking at alternatives, especially renewable ones, back when the first crisis hit back in 1973-1974. The oil companies have climbed so far into the bed of U.S. politics that it's going to be extremely difficult to get them out. I am still waiting for the folks around here in Northern California to figure out that driving 85+ on the freeway and then complaining about how much gas costs might be connected.
one of the guys who works for me has a wife who is a jw, but he is not.
his son-in-law also used to work for me until he got his license to sell real estate.
he serves as a minsterial servant in his congregation.
Buahaha! I might have put in microscopic "666" images, then leaked the story that the badges were the mark of the beast...
If I would have had more time, I might have put a watermark on it with something like that, but then again, I did not want to offend the guy too much as he is basically just a WINO and only attends meetings to keep the peace. He worked for me for two years and was a good worker and a nice person. How he maintains the ministerial servant status still puzzles me. I guess there are so few men "reaching out" that even those who barely reach are needed.

Not long after I arrived at work this morning, my employee also told me that his son-in-law said that some of the folks in his congregation traded their badges to ones from other congregations. It seems that some of the "miffed" folks mentioned in the original post wanted these special edition cards with the scripture references on the back and one even stated "This will be a collectors item." Ha ha
