Police track money from Berka case to Jehovah's Witnesses
Prague Daily Monitor, Czech Republic - 11 mins ago
... Jiri Berka embezzled from Czech companies through fraudulent bankruptcies ended up in bank accounts of the people connected with Jehovah's Witnesses, Mlada ...Police track money from Berka case to Jehovah's Witnesses
Prague, Sept 7 (CTK) - Police are investigating whether money that a criminal gang around former bankruptcy judge Jiri Berka embezzled from Czech companies through fraudulent bankruptcies ended up in bank accounts of the people connected with Jehovah's Witnesses, Mlada fronta Dnes reported Thursday. "This was either an ingenious network through which the group laundered the money or its members used the structure of the firms belonging to Jehovah's Witnesses for the legalisation of their profits from the business," a detective told the paper. Mlada fronta Dnes writes that bankruptcy fund administrator Daniel Thonat, the crown witness in the current court proceedings with Berka's criminal group, is a former member of the fundamentalist Christian religious society. Igor Brdlik, whom police consider the mastermind of the group, also had contacts with influential people from the sect. Judge Jiri Bernat, the chief judge in the trial of the group that is currently underway, has declined to comment on the role of Jehovah's Witnesses for the time being. "It is not on the agenda at present," he said. Mlada fronta Dnes writes that, according to the state attorney, the criminal gang around Berka embezzled almost CZK 300 million from Czech companies. Police believe that the group's profits could reach CZK 500 million. (USD1=22.069 crowns) This story copyright 2006 CTK Czech News Agency .(NOT a tabloid) [email protected] send your comments

Jehovah’s Witnesses hope for change in tax policy
Coquitlam Tri City News, Canada - 11 minutes ago
The 400 members with the Westwood Congregation of the Jehovah’s Witness are “hopeful” the city of Coquitlam will refund the $67,000 the church paid in ... By Janis Warren
The Tri-City NewsSep 06 2006 Judge said city had right to not give tax exemption but suggested it reconsider The 400 members with the Westwood Congregation of the Jehovah’s Witness are “hopeful” the city of Coquitlam will refund the $67,000 the church paid in municipal property taxes over the past three years, their lawyer said yesterday. “The congregation is hoping that things will go forward in a positive direction,” David Gnam told The Tri-City News yesterday. “They’re taking a positive view towards the city and have definitely made the submissions that were required and wish to be able to be taken seriously by the city. “They’re hopeful,” Gnam said. Last month, a Supreme Court judge ordered Coquitlam city council to take a second look at awarding property tax breaks to the church. Starting in 1969, the church received tax exemptions for its Kingdom Hall on Dewdney Trunk Road. In 1991, the Department of Highways expropriated 1,640 square feet of its parking lot to widen the street. The congregation offered to buy adjacent land to expand its parking lot but the city turned down its request for rezoning. The church then moved and, two years ago, as it was building its new place of worship at 1360 Pipeline Rd., Coquitlam city council — in a closed-door meeting — changed its policy on tax exemptions, allowing no new requests. As a result, the church was billed $33,734 in 2004 (for the 2005 tax year), $16,556 in 2005 and $17,640 this year. The church sued, arguing council’s refusal was outside its powers and cited religious discrimination but the case was dismissed by Madam Justice Carol J. Ross on Aug. 4. Still, while she said council was entitled to revise its policies and “the court must not usurp the role of council,” the judge asked Coquitlam city hall to review its tax policies concerning the congregation. Last night, city council was to decide if a delegation from the congregation could speak at a committee next week, asking for exemptions for 2005, ’06 and ’07. In a report dated Sept. 1, city clerk Sonia Santarossa recommended council also consider “any new permissive property tax exemption requests from other applicants” at next Monday’s meeting, including from Soojung Presbyterian church and the Belvedere Care Centre. City council needs to adopt the 2007 tax exemption bylaw by next month. Rod Sideroff, presiding minister of the Westwood congregation, said the church “isn’t just looking for our money back, we’re looking for fairness in receiving an exemption that 25 other properties received in Coquitlam,” he said. “We were the only one affected by [the policy change].” [email protected] Janis Warren

After more than two years of legal wrangling, claims in Napa County Superior Court that the Jehovah's Witnesses church failed to stop incidents of child sex ... By DAVID RYAN, Register Staff Writer
Tuesday, September 5, 2006 1:11 AM PDT After more than two years of legal wrangling, claims in Napa County Superior Court that the Jehovah's Witnesses church failed to stop incidents of child sex abuse here are inching toward trial.
According to an Aug. 14 court order signed by Napa County Superior Court Judge Raymond Guadagni, lawyers shepherding several cases against the church, involving plaintiffs from multiple counties, are finally on the cusp of setting a 2007 trial date. Previous court hearings had been marked by disagreement over legal procedures and decisions by several out-of-county plaintiffs to drop their lawsuits against the church.
In the two Napa cases, people identified only as Charissa W., Nicole D. and Tabitha H. have filed suit against the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Watchtower Bible and Tract Society -- the administrative organization of the Jehovah's Witnesses -- claiming church policy did not protect them from being sexually abused as minors. They claim to have been abused by Edward Bedoya Villegas, a convicted child molester who is now deceased but at one time was affiliated with the church. [email protected] send letter to editor -

Why is the WTBTS so against mental health professional treatment?
by Gill infollowing on from sandy's thread on her brother's pt, i wondered exactly why does the wtbts take such an opposing stand to professional mental health treatment?
-
DannyHaszard
Scully~ For one thing, mental health professionals teach people to deal with reality (the here and now), and how to overcome irrational thought patterns. This is diametrically opposed to the WTS's goal of getting people to live in a fantasy realm, and implanting irrational, paranoid thought patterns into their behaviour.
That's it! But it's a two way street with the mental health services too.It often takes earnest self-advocacy on the part of patient to convince a doctor of the realities of mind control, brain washing and stockholm syndrome, cognitive dissonance.
(If I tell a radio audience that demons are plotting against me i'm an evangelical preacher. If i tall a psychiatrist that demons are plotting against me i am a deluded paranoid.)
