  Elders with STRONG personalities....

  there is an elder in my congregation that has a very strong personality.

  he drove volkswagens and many bought the same make as he did.

  we had another elder back then that drove a dodge aries and another elder who had a peugeot garage and he sold so many second hand peugeots to members of the congregation.

  Yeah, i've met a couple of people like that in my life time. Kind of like Ta'verns from the wheel of time series.

  Reminds me of the lenny kravitz song,cult of personality.

  I knew this one 'brother' who i knew growing up who everyone loved adored. He'd start trends like wearing bike chain's as bracelets, playing the guitar or BMX bike riding.

  It seemed like whatever he was doing(or was dabbling in at the moment) hordes of other witness children would follow suit.

  What blew my mind was when he chose to become an electrician and several other teens (3 guys, 1 sisters) went into the field after high school. I'm pretty sure he'll become a very effective elder one day.

  What does one do at a concert?

  maybe i was just an uber-witness loser (i took the religion very seriously when i was in it).. a friend is trying to get me to go triple dating with some of her friends and this chick i'm diggin.

  the setting is this dashboard confessional's concert.. but i've never been to a concert, so i was wondering what the hell are you supposed to do?

  just stand around and jump up and down?.

  Its the Dashboard Confessional/Brand New tour.

  I've only heard one song from DC but I think i'm just going to take Crumpet's advice, not worry and just chill.

  The fallacy of 'spirituality'.

  leaving the watchtower does not mean leaving god.

  many here have been able to maintain a relationship with god without the need for a set of beliefs or a creed or any organised system of worship at all.

  no churches, meeting halls or study groups are necessary just a deeply held conviction in the goodness of god and the value of a personal relationship with him.. such believers often stress 'spirituality' over religion.. now i don't mean to denigrate anyone's beliefs and no offence is intended but really, is a 'spiritual' approach to life any better for our mental and emotional well-being than being part of an organised religion?

  I'm somewhere between deism and atheism right now.

  I'm ok with people spouting out their beliefs in 'spirituality' and all that good stuff, i just get pissed when they try to make it sound like my life is lacking and that their being 'in touch' with this newly acquired spirituality gives them the right to try give me crappy advice and/or pity me.

  Found Jesus, karma, yourself ,paradise, Buddha, chi,Allah, [insert here]? Great, keep it to yourself :-).

  Is manned space exploration a waste of money?

  i was watching a program the other day, and it mentioned some interesting things about exploring space.

  1. nothing has been found on other planets that we need or would benefit from.

  rather the opposite, we have found hostile environments that would kill us.. 2. the cost to get a man to these places is astronomical, and not something that would reap benefit to our planet.. 3. so far, nothing within reasonable traveling distance has shown itself worth an effort that would require man, and would not be done easier with machine.. so with this in mind, other then the travel we see with the space shuttle in our own orbit, that has shown some medical breakthroughs and so on.

  It is, but what can you do?

  They're saying that resources are depleting and that by 2050 most of the world's resources will be gone.

  Eventually humankind is going to have to leave this earth and find a different place or at least try to colonize different planet.

  Disfellowshipped for celebrating halloween?

  so i went partying on halloween in my costume.

  it was fun, had a great time, all that good stuff.. however, i'm on a peer network thing kind of like myspace but its only for college students, however, anyone who goes to my page can see that i have like 3 pictures of myself in my costume.

  so i was wondering, if a witness went onto my page and got those pictures could they use that as ammo to have me disfellowshipped?

  i consider myself to be an extremely tolerant person.

  i'm one of those people that are extremely yielding, never get into confrontations and things of that sort.. i've been fading for about two months but instead of being smart like everyone else on the board and doing it gradually, i simply just dropped off the face of the earth (by witness standards) and just focused on school and work.. theres one elder that has been calling my family asking about my whereabouts, the times i'm home, my cell # and all the good stuff.

  i wake up at 6:30 in the morning to the guy calling me, i dont bother picking up but he leaves a message.

  I really dont want to dissassociate myself until I have less dependence on my family but i'm afraid that if he calls me and starts something i'm going to act like JWFACTS and slip something that might be taken as a verbal form of dissassociation.

  So i guess what i'm wondering is if there would be a way to blow up at an elder but do it in such a way that they leave you alone for a while, but cant dissassociate you?
