i know that the issue of the man being beheaded by the iraqis has been discussed already but they just played the sound of the beheading on talk radio (shawn hannity).

He truly enjoys sports and attends a game. While at the game an errant ball comes his direction, in the furious grabbing and running to gain possession of the ball by other fans he is trampled to death because he is unable to move as fast as he did in his youth.
There is probably a whole semester to be taught at Berkley about freak accidents and their relevance to war-time situations vis a vis the middle east. I'd probably fail.

Patio's point was that this man put himself in a dangerous situation, and therefore all the dangers of said situation should be pointed out and factored into his death. Perhaps Analogies 101 may be a better course? If no one can see the pain this may cause those who can not grasp the situation (innocents killed, tortured ALL, Iraq, American) that this is done less than 2 days after death, I give up.

Hi Cassi,
I don't think it's a two-option only scenario: either grieve for him or blame him. There are just a lot of sides to the story. It doesn't mean the man shouldn't be grieved, but it also doesn't mean that certain factors shouldn't be known. The man was in a war zone, on his own. He was not a soldier. He was an American Jew. He was in horrible danger. As you said, maybe it was comparable to a person putting themself in a high-risk activity. But in no way is anyone saying he shouldn't be grieved.
It seems to me that people should want to know all the facts available. If nothing else, to prevent someone else from getting into dangerous situations unneccessarily.
Imo, this is just more of the picture. Are we so protected that it hurts us to read the Washington Times and comments about it?

Sorry I was called away. Imagine an elderly man at a football game, he is afflicted with parkinsons disease. He truly enjoys sports and attends a game. While at the game an errant ball comes his direction, in the furious grabbing and running to gain possession of the ball by other fans he is trampled to death because he is unable to move as fast as he did in his youth.

His family is heart broken they are horrified at the notion that the fans killed their father over a football. But you say to them; "oh well he put himself in a dangerous situation, he was aged, diseased, and could not hear properly because he was old. He should have known better and never put himself in that situation".

The family stands back in aghast because of showing remorse over his death you pointed out what you may see as faults and said he should have not be allowed to do something he enjoyed and therefore due to the danger it's 80% (assign any value) his fault.

I just do not see the need to assign blame to an innocent or to point out 10 reasons they should have not done something prior to their death or they did something to contribute to their death.

It seems strange to me that you have so much hostility at an observation about a man in such a dangerous position.

I can see his point to an extent, IMO it's like saying a person killed in a parachute accident or any extreme sport should not be greived about or should be blamed because it was his or her own stupidity which killed him, any siutuation where a person is killed because they may not have thought every detail through. I'm not saying this is what your point was by your post, yet it to me came off as insensitive, forgive me for misreading you if I have.

No matter how hard I try, I cannot possibly imagine how the headline:"Man Beheaded" is in any way sugar-coated! Where do you people live who say the media is ignoring this story while the prison abuse is over-reported?

One, please go back to my first post in this thread, I referred to it with the statement that seems to me is taken out of context. Ask your next store neighbor how this man died and they will say beheading. Americans are a romantic sort and most I have spoken to have made the same assumption I did, a Samauri beheading, quick and painless not the torture which he endured.

Others in this very thread believe it was quick and painless. It was not and it is my belief that the way in which it was reported leads many to this assumption. We have heard about, sodomy, dog leashes and we are quite aware of these details but as I said earlier because many hear the word beheading they think quick, painless death. And in my opinion the way in which it was initially reported by the media is the reason for the misunderstanding.

First, he obviously did not speak the langauge, did not know the region. But the good old US of A was bringing democracy and all that, time to teach the natives. Wonderful idealism. But this is not Kansas, this is a dangerous region, and it is not for amateur hour to wander around a country you don't know, that you have no support in, and that you don't know people in, that you have no connections to keep you safe. Bloody hell, staying in low-end hotels, no connections, no saftey.

Everyone assumes things perhaps he thought a low profile would keep him out of the eye of those wishing to do harm. God only knows, why the hell do people rock climb and jump out of airplanes? He was not there to teach he was working.

I've seen more than enough pornography of violence in my life, and yet I'm guessing this would be the worst. I have absolutely no need to see worse than what I've already seen w/o being forced to.

I agree to an extent. Yet, anyone can turn a channel, no one is forced to watch such and should not be. But my point lies in my previous post.

( read Samurai beheading) , not reading ?Man Tortured; While Having His Head Sawed Off, Slowly Screaming In Agony?. While the American abuses have been touted, explicit headline after headline

Why not tout this for what it was than sugar coating it with the headline of Man Beheaded. As I said before the graphic details of the Abuse of Iraq prisoners is on the news every second, yet when the grapic deatils of this comes to light people squirm.

If just seems to me that the American abuse is being touted and headlined while this abberant behavior is as I said sugar coated. Two sets of rules for the media IMO, make the American soldiers look horrible yet excuse the Iraq behavior or not make it seem quite as bad.

"Those damn Iraqis"? *shakes head* No, they were not necessarilly soldiers or p.o.w.'s. And yes, evidently, some of them were killed, and with more brutality than a quick knife to the throat.

There was nothing 'quick' about it Six if you have watched the video we must have seen two totally different videos. They did not cut his throat and then behead him, it was done from the back of his neck ,while they were sawing slowly, torturing him.

I do not think that this is uncalled for whatsoever. Why is it ok to watch the abuses at the Iraq prison yet not watch or hear the harsh realities of war?

I believe that Americans in general lead a lifestyle with blinders on. When I first heard of the ?beheading? the first thing I pictured in my mind was a Samurai beheading. Clean cut no pain.

This man went through hell as some Iraq prisoners did as well. Why should we continue to shield ourselves from the realities of war? Why does it seem to me anyway that watching the Americans abuse prisoners seems ok and people are horrified by it, yet listen to that poor man and there is outrage? Perhaps because he is one of our own and it affects one differently?

I don?t know this, I do however know that the blame game must stop; people need to realize that the soldiers who committed these abuses are a few in a million and Americans have been labeled animals. Yet, when the reality of this mans death hits the news we again are ostracized because we dared to show what happened to one of our own.

This is not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last. It happened to Daniel Pearl as well, and it was quickly forgotten. Perhaps they aired the tape because many were under the assumption as it was a "Samurai" beheading and not outright horrendous torture. Perhaps because they cry it was in retaliation for what happened to their prisoners the world accepts this as fact and its 'ok'.

Yet, when the Americans say they were retaliating for the rape of Jessica Lynch no sense of understanding of human nature is shown to Americans, we are labeled animals. When the Iraq people were avenging the torture of their prisoners by sawing off this mans head it seems oh, ok that?s their nature and we just need to accept it and move on.

i saw just enough of the beheading video to cast me in a terrible depression.

that - added to the prison abuse still photos - leaves me wondering why humans continually sink to such depravity.

(i never thought i'd be saying this, but i'm sick of seeing naked men.

We have a thirteen page thread speaking of how horrible a dozen or so Americans are due to the cruel and unusual punishment of POWs in Iraq. I already spoken my mind on such and will not comment further. There are also several other threads which remain unlocked dealing with the atrocities of the American soldiers in the prison.

It seems that when American's are outraged at such horrible events such as a man having his head sawed off with a knife while he screams for which seems a lifetime-- we are not able to express our outrage and concern. Of course tempers are going to flare. This is far from a "G" subject matter as are the abuses by American soldiers. I agree the attacks upon other forum members are not helping situations and need to be avoided.

But to crush any outpouring of shock, sympathy, compassion, any form of comment on the matter is only going to hurt those affected by this horrible revelation.

Trying to fade slowly....

i am trying to fade slowly, but am finding this increasingly difficult.

i can't sit through a meeting, i had to leave at the 1/2 the other day, because of my recent enlightenment, the hypocrisy is to much for me to take.

as i left you could see the looks on people faces, "oh she's just not spritual enough".
