How's this for weird....
My first opera was Carmen, which got me hooked for life...
of course beethoven's fifth is tops for me, and the ninth close behind.
also sprach zarathustra - strauss.
fanfare for the common man - aaron copeland (what a nice thing that was for him to dedicate such a great piece of music to plebeians like me *sniff*).

Anewme,
Just a little quibble, the opera you described is "Madame Butterfly".
Just to add my $0.02, how about Beethoven's 7th symphony?
in a recent post, sir82 wrote that a trainee missionary attending the school of gilead emailed the following..

Here's a little anecdote to illustrate the spirit that seems to reside in my congregation, which I think is fairly typical:
Recently, the service overseer proposed a "pioneer day" on a Saturday, with meetings for service at 7:00 AM (!), 9:00 am & 12:30 pm.
6 people showed up at 7.
About 1/2 the congregation showed up at 9, but only about 1/2 of the elders, and about 1/2 of the pioneers.
Arrangements were made to bring in lunch at 12:00 to the Kingdom Hall, with the idea that the brothers would eat at 12:00, then stick around to go out again at 12:30.
The 40+ who were out in the morning all come back by 12:00 sharp to eat, but only 14 or so stayed for the 12:30 meeting. Apparently, the other 30+ had plans to go Baaling that afternoon.
It wasn't that long ago, that a "pioneer day" would bring out 100% of the pioneers & elders, and a majority of the congregation, and a far larger number for the afternoon too.
eugenie scott of the national center for science education has written a retraction, after being slapped with a libel suit.
she wrongly accused roseville, california attorney larry caldwell of presenting for adoption to the school board two books on young-earth creation, one (get this!
) published by jehovah's witnesses.
But I still don't understand...
"God didn't intend for it to happen".....but it did happen.
God's purpose is "what he intends to happen", is it not?
So a human's choice, the choice to sin, thwarts God's purpose?
I'm not trying to be obtuse, I really don't understand how this works. I've struggled with this for quite some time.

Hib,
Considering the snippets below:
It's great to enjoy the wonderful creation from Jehovah. But look what his creation has turned into - a polluted, sickening world full of pedophiles, cults, nuclear weapons, and evil evil people. Jehovah created this - and it turned out horribly.
That is because of sin. God never intended this to happen.

Does that mean that things happen that are outside of God's control? I thought God was, by definition, omniscient & omnipotent.
apparently the first ever talkie feature film was al jolsons "the jazz singer"but growing up,i was told(via the gift of propaganda) the first ever talkie was the "photo drama of creation"...................please help me with the truth of the matter????
?
Someone correct me if I am wrong....
I believe the Photo-Drama of Creation had Pastor Russell's voice recorded on separate medium, but recorded while he was filmed talking. The idea was that the projectionist would have to time the starting of the film with the starting of the wax disk (or whatever his voice was recorded on). Thus, it would appear that he was speaking on the film.
You are correct in that "The Jazz Singer" was the first film to incorporate sound as part of the film itself.
the following appears to teach the literal return of jesus in visible form to this earth.
how do jehovah witnesses view this verse, and the emphasis of the various phrases (in bold) ?.
acts 1:11 (kjv): "which also said, ye men of galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?
Acts 1:11, per the official JW explanation:
When Jesus was caught up into the cloud, only his faithful disciples were there to discern it. Most people were unaware that he had gone.
So, when he would return, only his faithful disciples would really know it. Most people would be unaware he returned (i.e., "in the same manner")
Thus, support for the 1914 Invisible Presence teaching.

page 215 -- 218 in the appendix section which start on page 194. i won't bore you with the same old same old interpretation of 607 b.c.e.
the seven times, 2,520 years.
TheListener,
It's never (to my knowledge) appeared in print, but I seem to recall seeing other posters recount talks in which it was explained that Satan started WWI a few months earlier then October, to distract all earthly inhabitants from Jesus' enthroning.
You couldn't make this stuff up!
i am in the process of fading.
my husband's a well-respected elder.
i have 2 teenage kids.
How important is it to your husband that he serves as an elder?
I ask because your inactivity & fading will almost certainly lead to his removal as an elder.
Some bodies of elders & COs are far more fanatical about this than others, but in general, if your meeting attendance & field service decline notably, he will get pressure because his wife is "not in subjection", and he is not "presiding over his household in a fine manner".
The next step, I imagine, is the PO and/or CO will pressure him to get you reactivated. If he wants to remain an elder, this will lead his pressuring you. If you refuse to cooperate, and the elders/CO see no improvement from you, they will likely "kindly" ask him to "step aside" as an elder. If he does not, he will at some point later likely be "removed".
How strong is your relationship otherwise? Will he resent you for forcing him to lose his prestige?
I don't mean to alarm you, I just want to give you an idea of what you might face.
i think ~150 a.d. is early enough for debunking any wt position: .
"and this food is called among us eukaristia [the eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as christ has enjoined.
for not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as jesus christ our saviour, having been made flesh by the word of god, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of his word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that jesus who was made flesh.
No, no, no!
How could you all miss the point?!?
The quote from the original post in this thread was written in 150CE!!!
As you know, any and all Christians as of 99CE (1 year after the death of the last of Apostles) were immediately & hopelessly corrupted by Greek philosophy*. How else do you think we can explain how 80,000 or so of the 144,000 were "gathered" in the years 1879 - 1935, (along with additional dribbles here & there between 99 CE & 1879)?
Y'all need to go back to the Theocratic Ministry School or sumthin'.
* Except where their writings, whether in or out of context, seem to back up "current truth". Apparently there were flashes of non-paganism from time to time in the 2nd century church. As the quote from the original post is out of line with the latest Watchtower, we can safely say the writer was as pagan as blue-painted tree-worshipping druid.
