  i never knew those guys had so much power!

  i tried best i could to write down all the important points word for word as they were said: (apparently the letter will not be posted on the board but anyone is free to speak to an elder with any questions concerning the letter:

  College? We all know Satan lives on campus! Predatory vixens are stalking the hallways, waiting to pounce on, seduce, and corrupt any naive and spirtiually weak JW who might have wandered onto the grounds. Either that, or give them AIDS by plunging a dirty needle of heroin into their arms. This stuff always happens at college, you know.

  No, I'm afraid that the HLCs are full of carpet layers, janitors, window washers, and plumbers, giving medical advice to world-renowned heart surgeons on what proedures they should use when operating on Brother Belly-Buster who just had a massive coronary.

  Birthdays banned in 1951?

  just want to share what i've uncovered on this and verify my conclusion!.

  it was my impression that birthdays were banned shortly after christmas was in 1926. the proclaimers book is very vague about this, implying that the ban shortly followed the christmas ban.

  i searched the 1940s watchtower magazines and uncovered this blurb in the jan 1, 1940 watchtower, p. 16, under "field experiences": cleveland, ohio: "pardon me for intruding on your precious time, but i just cant help letting you know how much i appreciate the phonograph which came to me on the morning after the 8th, which was my 80th birthday.

  This may have been the first official mention of birthday prohibitions, but I have a hunch something stronger came out in the mid-60s.

  My parents were long-time JWs, my dad from the Rutherford days. Yet I have seen a photo of me at my year 1 birthday party, which would have been right smack in the middle of the mid 60s. But I never again got another birthday party.

  I'm at work and don't have my CD available, but I suspect something else was written around then.

  Is there anyone at Bethel who knows Greek or Hebrew?

  fred franz was known to have some knowledge of the greek and hebrew languages, and made use of that knowledge when he worked on the new world translation of the holy scriptures.

  but he died in 1992. is there anyone at bethel today who has a knowledge of these biblicl languages?.

  it would be strange if a religious book publishing organization turned out to have no one at all who could read the bible in its original languages.. does anyone know what people are currently on the watchtower's bible translation committee, and if they know the languages?.

  Don't know how far back you may go in the JW organization, but in the 60's / 70's Watchtower studies were quite a bit deeper than now. Original Greek and/or Hebrew words were studied, dissected, nuances & shades of meaning were discussed. Not all the time, mind you, but several times a year, we'd be instructed on original Greek terms to help refute the trinity, or define love, etc.

  Now, Watchtower studies are extremely dumbed down, with pictures of Goofus and Gallant in case the 5-letter words are too tough for you to figure out what a "true Christian" should be doing (riding around in an SUV heading for a picnic - B-A-D...tromping off to knock on the doors of everyone else who is not at home, because they are at the soccer field - G-O-O-D).

  An interest in Koine Greek or Biblical Hebrew would imply that there was still a need to refer to ancient manuscripts.

  As the NWT is perfect for reinforcing current doctrine, there is no need for any Bethelite to know those languages. In fact, any attempt to study ancient manuscripts, as if they might teach something other than JW doctrine, would be at the very least viewed as a sign of weak faith, and depending on which way the wind was blowing, could result in apostasy charges.

  Worldly companies do nothing for you.

  And what does Bethel do for you, if you commit the sin of contracting a chronic illness? "We think its time you start pioneering, Brother Feeble, since you and your wife can no longer work 44 hours a week for us. Don't let the door hit you on the way out."

  Perhaps you work many nights overtime or over weekends.

  So less education means less hours at work? Ah, I see. Well, perhaps no one should go to school after 8th grade, then they can get by working just 20 hours a week. Or maybe if you quit school in the 4th grade, you'll never have to work at all!

  When the company scales down, don’t expect that loyalty back from them.

  And when Bethel scales down, what loyalty do they show?

  Remember, we’re not saying that if you’re suffering mentally you cannot seek medical assistance. But, remember, that we control what we allow our minds to dwell on.

  Think of it - the cure is found here! Those thousands, millions of people who suffer from depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia, etc., well, they're just not trying hard enough to "control what their minds dwell on". That's all it takes! And our famous GB member, armed with merely his "stone" of a high school + Gilead education, cuts thru the medical misdirection of millions of doctors who treat these problems with drugs, psycho-therapy, counseling. All balderdash! Just try harder to "control what your mind dwells on!

  this doesn't make alot of sense to me, because the word "inspire" can have alot of different meanings, as i've copied from the merriam-webster online dictionary below.

  while i definitely believe in god, i think that #5 is probably closer to the truth.

  if i write a book or a song and say i was inspired by elvis, that doesn't mean that elvis wrote it or even approved it-----it simply means that i wrote it with him in mind.

  Why didn't Jehovah give the job (forming the bible) to his Faithfull and Discreet Slave Class since Jesus entrusted ALL his belongings to THEM?

  He did, didn't he?

  Hence, the "New World Translation", complete with hundreds of "corrections" to the errors the original writers included.

  E.g., inserting "Jehovah" into the NT text, "thru Christ all [other] things were created...", etc. etc.
