I visited a temple in Bali and rather than give money, the people gave......flowers.

How do other churches and religions finance themselves compared to JW's?
by ThomasCovenant inthe jw's, including myself when in, seemed proud to make the point that collection plates are not passed around at the hall.. instead there are boxes at the back of the kingdom hall and in various locations at assembly halls for contributions.. plus the service meeting items detailing how else to contribute.. as far as i'm aware the catholic church passes a plate along the aisles.
but do other churches?.
are the witnesses correct to use this as a unique selling point?.

Where do we go when we die?
by wannabe inwhere do we go when we die?.
there are many very confusing concepts about this subject.
about where we go when we die, and no one i've found to date has really set forth a satisying answer to this question; so i thought i might just employ some of the knowledge i've gained from my own thirty year study of the bible.. where actually would be the most sensible place to begin when dealing with this subject?

It's funny but I would have swallowed all that guff 15 yrs ago and now I see it for what it truly is... The arrogance of christians.
Possible San basically says it, there'a a big world out there, full of differing beliefs. Humility seems to be written out of modern fundy christian belief.

What's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?
by A.Fenderson inwhat's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?.
my personal recommendation: synecdoche, new york.
it's one of those movies that words fail utterly to capture--which really is the hallmark of a good movie, i suppose.

Travellers and Magicians.
A stunning movie from the Buddhist country called Bhutan. The directer is a Buddhist monk and the story flows on two levels. This movie gave me a greater understanding of the depth in Buddhist thought.
Sounds boring, I know but do yourself a favour and rent it. 5 STAR!!! (Oh, yeah, the cinematography is awesome)

It makes better sense to worship RA
by AK - Jeff inthe sun provides clear benefits:.
photosynthesisweatherwater cyclewarmthin short - without the sun our planet would be a totally desolate, lifeless globe.
in fact, without the sun to orbit about, the planet would not be situated where it is in the universe at all.

At least the sun is reliable, not like the other moody, changeable god.

I'll have a try...
Once humans evolved to the point that we became conscious of our individuality, e.g. "I think therfore I am", our eyes became open to the reality of aloneness and the ultimate aloneness, death, which no one can travel with you.
So, there became a deep need for humans to form close bonds, not just for procreation and efficient hunting and safety but to (attempt to) satisfy the growing awareness of death.
I would imagine that feelings of love would have evolved at the same time as humans started looking to gods/religion and also the early beginnings of funeral ceremonies.

Did You Exit the Witnesses Due to Injustices / Difference with Doctrine-Both?
by flipper inmany of us leave due to injustices committed inside the organization.
i did initially.
i had doubts about some doctrines for years - but not until after leaving the witnesses was i free to be able to confirm my suspicions and see that yes, i did have valid reasons to have doubts all those years .

As I have made clear on this site over the years, it was the "the generation" backflip and subsequent denial that finally snapped me back to reality. Ironically, it was the society's CD that provided the background information.
As the information came up on the screen (the history of generation in jw writings), literrally a darkness lifted off my eyes. Yep, kinda weird but I could NEVER go near a kh again. Thank you modern technology!!
All the injustices welled up later, esp the child molesting, which I was aware of on numerous occasions. My only excuse for not contacting the authorities is that I was in a cult

We never said "the generation" who saw 1914 was literal.
