basically, all religions have the same core tenets.
1. have love for others.. 2. don't value material things more than you value each other.. i have a theory for this.
i call it the natural guilt theory.
Good argumentations Joel and Larc. Most humans are communal, and we need these qualities in order to live together and protect our offspring. I think there is an element selfishness in altruism though - the better the community the better protection for ourselves and our children.
My husband says that it is all down to the genetic imperative, but he is allowed to have his own views.

i was thinking about this in several areas today.. 1) district conventions and house-to-house work.
if you were a witness for a long time, you probably remember a time when going to the conventions seemed perfectly "normal" to you: it was absolutely "the thing" to sit in a sports arena all day listening to bible talks and counsel from men in suits.. but at some point, did you ever start to feel like you were participating in a cultural relic, so to speak?.
as in, "here it is, the 1990's, and the society is still using fundamentally the same old format they've been using all century long.

I didn't go quite that far, but I did knock very quietly, after walking very quietly to the door. I didn't lie about my time, just stretched it a bit - if it was 35min, it was an hour.
I'm just so glad that all my efforts over so many years didn't result in one single convert to that bunch of out-dated salespersons

it's strange how life has a tendency to balance things out, to ultimately repay us for both our bad deeds and our good deeds.. how ironic it is that the wtbts's policy on shunning has now become a major force that actually unites searchers for justice throughout the world!
what a smack in the teeth to this unilateral org, they themselves through their appalling treatment of ex's, have finished up simply pushing so called apostates into each others arms!.
would sites such as this exist if the wtbts rescinded their belief in shunning?

Like any dictatorship, or totalitarian regieme, the problems within are many, but below the surface. Once the victims of their tactics to keep them in break free, they are emotionally shaken, but have become strengthened as well by their efforts. Like refugees, ex's do find comfort in a group who understand what they have been through. And it also encourages people like Outnfree to go forth and expose.

I agree, although I doubt you'd get the WTS to. But it certainly seems that many of the tactics used by the JWs to maintain their numbers could be considered a violation of human right.
(Of course, that wouldn't apply here in Australia, our present government seems to pick and choose which UN declaration it intends to work with.)
I also found another of the articles interesting in relation to disfellowshipping or disassociating:
Article 5.Would you say that shunning ex JWs could be considered in this light? It can feel like it.No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
i made a big mistake when signing up at this supposed website for jehovah's witnesses.
after reading some things on this site it has become apparent to me that this site is nothing put another pathetic site for apostates: people who betrayed jehovah, left the truth, and are so bitter about their experiene in the truth, and they are angry just like satan because they know they will very soon be dead at jehovah's hand!.
this website should be renamed something more fitting like "satan's playground" or a similar name that would get across the message of your site.. sincerely,.

I agree with you Waiting - it must be part of that fascination with the "dark side".
One of the reasons I like this board is because there are a lot of the people here who acually think for themselves, and don't revert to rhetoric like they were taught to in their JW days. People like LaraK only help to remind me when I'm out here.

No dins, I never thought I'd get a degree, I was such a good little witness that I didn't even finish high school. What did your Grandmother end up doing? I wish I'd woken up to that shunning rubbish alot earlier.

But it seems to me that people are dfed from the WTS for not believing them, and it doesn't appear to matter what the doctrine is, you just have to agree with them. So, as the WTS change their minds, you must faithfully follow them in their new thoughts and agree to that too.
You are not allowed to have your own thoughts, thats all.
hi, just a question about something that i have been wondering about for a while.
did anyone else have the feeling that they had to discover who they were when they moved away from the wts?
for the majority of my life i had been identified as one of jw, that was how i saw myself and it impacted on everything and everyone else in my life.
Hello again, and thank you for the words of encouragement. It is a long road, isn't it? But a worthwhile one, I should say. I had to go out today and whilst waiting in a queue I saw a poster which if I remember correctly, had quoted on it
"No matter how much is behind you, or how much is in front of you, it is a small matter compared to what is within".
Actually, I just saw the post "Nice Bit of Skirt on WOL", and realised that we have come a long way since our dub days.
