I so badly want a Wii. I've been trying since launch to get my hands on one, and ironically, I haven't been able to get one (Ironic because I do work for Nintendo marketing). Oh well, must wait till the new year.
Incidentally, the people swing the controllers like idiots and smashing their TVs are just dumb. Have you seen the youtube videos? Its quite silly.

Christmas is Christian
by Amazing infalse reasoning: the wts claims that there are only two birthdays mentioned in the bible, both of which resulted in someone being killed.
thus, they conclude, that this is jehovah's way of telling us that we should not celebrate brithdays, including the birth of jesus christ.. fact: there are five birthdays mentioned in the bible.
the most important and celebrated is the birth of jesus christ himself.

This is exactly why I don't celebrate Christmas. I'm not a Christian, so why would I? Besides which, I strongly object to Christmas being a national holiday in a culture that is increasingly pluralistic.

News - Neanderthal DNA 99.5% Like Ours
by Satanus injust recently, some scientists managed to sequence neanderthal dna.
while this discovery is not totally explored at this point, the following data are quite solid.. using different techniques, two teams of scientists separately sequenced large chunks of dna extracted from the femur of a 38,000-year-old neanderthal specimen found in a cave [image] 26 years ago in croatia.
one team sequenced more than one million base pairs and the other 65,000 pairs of the genome.. .

I would also add, that they have already sequenced the mtDNA of Neanderthal man. Very fascinating stuff, really a big step forward for genomics. Of course, they very scary interesting idea here, is being able to being one back.

From http://www.atheists.org/flash.line/atheist4.htm
In the "No Religion" category measuring lifestyles of the 29-million or so members of this cohort, 33% were single, 22% single and co-habiting, 19% married, and 9% divorced. Six percent were widowed. Only Buddhists (47%) and Muslim/Islam believers (37%) exceeded the numbers in the singles category. But the "No Religion" group showed low rates of divorce compared to religious counterparts. Pentecostal Christians had the highest divorce rates at 14%, followed by Episcopalian/Anglicans at 12%, Baptists at 12%, and the Assemblies of God at 10%. Non-believers had comparable divorce rates along with Methodists, Roman Catholics, "Christians," Church of Christ members and others. ARIS noted, "the no religion group was far more likely to be either single, never married or single, living with a partner than any other group." Evangelical Christians and Assemblies of God followers were more likely to marry (73% and 74%), thus possibly contributing to the high divorce rates.

There is no such thing as Agnosticism. Agnostics do not exist!
by nicolaou inmany here seem to believe that the position of agnosticism is somehow more reasonable than theism or atheism.
nonsense!
it is a misconception to believe that belief or non-belief in the existence of god/s are the two extremes which glare at each other over the fence of agnosticism.

LittleToe, amen. Militant beliefs are a huge turn off. Tolerance and mercy are groovy.
Incidentally, everyone is ignoring Ignosticism. Way more fun than agnosticism.
Ignosticism is the view that the question of the existence of God is meaningless because it has no verifiable (or testable) consequences and should therefore be ignored. (See scientific method.) The term was coined by Rabbi Sherwin Wine, founder of the Society for Humanistic Judaism. Ignosticism is often considered synonymous with theological noncognitivism.

Why is it considered so wrong to be anti-religious or aggressively atheist?
by nicolaou ini'm not talking about the simple belief that there is no god and that religion is a brake on the development of humanity but the aggressive and vocal campaign to convince others of such?.
what's wrong with that?
why do believers feel so offended when i try to reason with them on the invalidity of their faith and the abusive nature of religious institutions?

LittleToe, I believe I said a burden of proof lies with a claimant. I'm not really sure what you are attempting to correct.
Atheists will argue that atheism requires the fewest new assumptions about how the world works, and hence, is more reasonable.

The burden of proof lies with the claimant. Though beliefs can be based on the stars, tea leaves, simply having this sort of proof for a belief does not make the belief desirable or true in any meaningful sense. Homeopathy and astrology fit this well. Believers will point to their mass of "evidence", but these beliefs still have very real negative effects.

Intelligent design redux
by ackack inin a thread about id, it got a little bit off-track discussing id theories.. essentially, i'm sure there are those here you are proponents of id, and perhaps, you could lets us in on what is considered proof for and intelligent designer.
i think i've heard a few of the lines of evidence id proponents use, but i'm always open to hearing other lines, or even if someone feels they have a genuinely test that could demonstrate (or not) the plausibility of id.. ackack.
