Read any good books lately?

so, i will be down and out for awhile after a little surgery this week and i am trying to get a few books to keep myself amused and i am looking for suggestions on something you may have read recently and enjoyed.

i prefer non-fiction, but will consider reading anything highly recommended, as long as it contains at least a spark of truth.

well, i will recommend a book to you alla few days ago, i finished reading into the wild by jon krakauera biographical story about a young man who, after graduating college, got rid of all of his belongings and hitch-hiked across the country in search of jack london-esque adventures.

markfromcali- Coincidently, I am interested in eastern philosophy a bit. And if I am thinking of the correct book and author, actually opened up Wei Wu Wei’s OS and tried reading a few passages but found it so extremely intense at the time…I put it down and sort of forgot about it. A good friend of mine (philosophy grad student) had a copy but we are no longer in touch, and yes...I think it would be hard to find at the local library across the street form me. Haha. You have me wanting to revisit it. I may check out AA or some of his other work. Thanks.

Try Patricia Cornwell's "Portrait of a Killer" about Jack the Ripper. Good read.

I read this last year after seeing a documentary on her theory. Very fascinating.

...great flick about a young girl from poverty-stricken Colombia that takes a job as a drug trafficker into the U.S. One of those films you cannot get out of your head after seeing.

That is still pretty broad. It's nice that you're open, but what are you more interested in? In the past these threads get pretty full, chances are you will either not get to all of the recommendations nor be interested in all of them, so maybe we can narrow it down a bit?

Hmmm, I guess I could narrow it down a little bit and say I am most interested in science related topics, philosophical ideas, travel and geographical subjects, classic literature, biographies, shoot... I could go on and on. lol.

I like the suggestions so far. Even if I don't end up reading them this week, I enjoy hearing about what other people are currently reading and loving.

How about: no romance, no sci-fi, no political (unless geo-relevant). That is as narrowed down as I get.

Well, I will recommend a book to you all…A few days ago, I finished reading “Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer…a biographical story about a young man who, after graduating college, got rid of all of his belongings and hitch-hiked across the country in search of Jack London-esque adventures. Much to the dismay of his parents, who expected him to return home in time to attend law school, he chose to abandon a conventional lifestyle of “things” and continue his adventure in Alaska. He never returned home. His body was found in an old abandon bus out in the middle of the bush (Stampede trail near Denali) a year later. He starved to death. Anyway, I highly recommend it. But don’t say I didn’t warn you in that it left me utterly disturbed.

Allow me to add, I have read all of the relevant exjw material. Looking for something a little different than that.

Witnesses sit next to me at the theater last night

had a bizzare experience last night.

i went to see the movie mr. and mrs. smith (which, by the way, was pretty decent).

my girlfriend and i showed up about 20 minutes before the show started, so we picked out some seats and then each went to the restroom in turn while the other watched the seats.

It was a strange sensation, because at first I had the Witness reaction of shock and nervousness on seeing a disfellowshipped person.

Does that mean meg is df’d and still giving you the shun treatment? Or that was maybe just your reaction…

I often wonder what it would be like to be shunned by my old friends. Living so far away it is not likely to happen… but I imagine if I visit home and I run into them at a theater or something and they try to ignore me… I fear I would freak. Like, I would want to walk right up to them and just ask... WTF?.. followed by a sudden outburst of laughter and a vocal noting of how screwed up they are.

Sounds like you handled it a lot better.

no one to talk to

i guess this is my introductory post.. like many of you, i was raised as a witness.. like many of you, i'm no longer associated with them.. it still hangs over me like a plague.

it's really annoying.

i haven't been to a meeting in 4 years, i'm "out of the closet" - my parents know i'm no longer interested, my oldest brother won't talk to me... etc.

Hey Jeeves!

I was talking about this very thing with a friend of mine recently. We both have had to do some figuring out in the whole area of developing new meaningful female/male relationships after a lifetime of insta-friends. It has been challenging, but we both agreed on one thing: with the friendships that we now make in the world it is reassuring to know the other parties are drawn to us and our personalities out of a genuine interest in who we are. Not out of any “christian” obligation.

By the way...welcome girl.
