it's not because there's a zionist lobby.

it is reason that engenders self-respect, and reflection that confirms it: it is reason which turns man's mind back upon itself, and divides him from everything that could disturb or afflict him.
it is philosophy that isolates him, and bids him say, at sight of the misfortunes of others: "perish if you will, i am secure.
" nothing but such general evils as threaten the whole community can disturb the tranquil sleep of the philosopher, or tear him from his bed.
Hey COMF,
Rousseau's point is that it is in our nature to 'identify a person in real distress' and sympathize; civilization, however, has taken us far enough from our nature that we are numb.
The whole premise behind 'being secure' in society is relative, isn't it? (i.e., being more secure than someone of lower social status.)
He makes a valid argument.
Think about it, if not for your social status, why would you go to work?
Couldn't you survive perfectly well on a lower salary?
Haven't you cursed some of your own 'poor choices', such as living beyond your means, though you earned quite a decent income?

A murder may with impunity be committed under his window; he has only to put his hands to his ears and argue a little with himself, to prevent nature, which is shocked within him, from identifying itself with the unfortunate sufferer. Uncivilised man has not this admirable talent; and for want of reason and wisdom, is always foolishly ready to obey the first promptings of humanity. It is the populace that flocks together at riots and street-brawls, while the wise man prudently makes off. It is the mob and the market-women, who part the combatants, and hinder gentle-folks from cutting one another's throats.

i was raised in a very religiously strict christian home, and have been presbyterian or baptist my whole life.
i have heard nothing but bad things about the jw's.
just recently i have gotten very interested in in learning more about jw, and possibly becoming one.
If a JW can think for his/herself, they will tend to be a kind and caring friend. But the WT doesn't encourage people to think for themselves.
That is the problem.

i would like to ask jws who are visiting here to go check their watchtower indexes for leo greenlees.
he was a member of the governing body, he also is the only governing body member whose disappearance from the gb is not documented in watchtower literature!
the announcement of the death, resignation or dismissal of every gb member can be found in watchtower publications except that of leo greenlees!!!
Wow, JT...
...what a story!

YK,
yes, there is a fundamentalist political movement, but political activism it is not a requisite for a fundamentalist group or organization.
Of course I recognize that JWs refrain from political action. But it cannot be said that they are not involved in 'the world'. There are 6 million active JWs and many more inactive or irregular. They are making their voice heard even in abstinence. (i.e. consumer behaviors, etc)
You cannot claim to be a JW and an observer. You are contributing to apathy and ignorance...that is a political view as well.
Take a look at the movie The Man Who Wasn't There. The theme is responsibility. Very good film.

YK,
Jehovah's Witnesses may not be rabid, but they heavily lean towards fundamentalism. While this may be denied from the platform, it is sad but true.
Read the arguments by this guy John Woodmorappe, for example, and then pay attention next time the flood talk is given in your kingdom hall.

If the P.O. is smart, he won't scedule this talk. It reeks of fundamentalist teachings. But then, so does the Creation book.
Doesn't it make you curious why 'scientist' can be used in the same paragraph to discredit one opinion and support another? The authors want you to reject the opinions of any scientist who does not acknowledge a creator.
Stop allowing yourself to be manipulated.

So what do you guys think of LaRouche? He seems to be right about a lot of stuff, (like real estate is creating a financial bubble, being worth much less than the price for which it is sold) but then he uses phrases like 'terrible economic collapse' without explaining what it might mean.
Is he just trying to scare people into voting for him?
Because if his economic projections are accurate, we need to do more than just hop on the bandwagon and say 'oh my god the sky is falling'.
Is he content with just constantly declaring that the U.S. is on the brink of financial disaster?
