Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -3.50
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -6.26

sometimes political orientation is described through a left-right axis only, which is obviously inadequate as it tends to associate gandhi and stalin, and make pol pot a radical and hitler a conservative.. this is a good, short test that asks you a number of questions and places you on a two-dimensional axis.. take it here: http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/.
i took the test and got the following result:.
your political compass:economic left/right: -1.12. authoritarian/libertarian: -6.21. that is, centrist with a slight leftist bent, strongly libertarian.

TR et al,
I do not know what was said, but I presume the comments you took as 'anti-American' were simply critical of American foreign or domestic policy. What would be very 'anti-American' is to try to shut up those criticizing the way the U.S. does things. If the U.S. does not listen to criticism, it will hinder its own progress.
Never confuse constructive criticism with opposition. If someone's criticism is not constructive, then you can either ask them to be helpful or ignore them if necessary.
Also, never confuse complaisant flag-waving with support of the nation's best interests.
TR,
I am sure you have a number of good reasons to spend time away from your computer and JW.com. Best of luck!

"it's the end of the world as we know it ... and i feel fine" .
i have always loved this line, as it sums up my conversations with witnesses and family that remain witnesses.
when 9/11 happened i got a lot of letters, conversations, and phone calls from witnesses wanting my wife and i to become active again.
That's a cool song...but I am curious about something. What is the significance of mentioning Leonard Bernstein?
Wait, I am looking it up...
...oh, of course...Leonard Berstein was a gay conductor, most notably of the NY Philharmonic. That's right. I met an older composer once at Tower Records in Hollywood (I forget his name, but it was not familiar) who said he used to see Berstein in Harlem. The composer that I met was there to see movies, but Berstein admitted he was there to pick up young guys.

my girlfriend and i have birthdates exactly 10 days apart (mine comes earlier).
our mothers have birthdates exactly 10 days apart (her mother's comes earlier).
What a cool thread! I am regretting less that I stayed up late last night to contemplate my navel in front of a diverse (or not so diverse ) audience.
Two interesting coincidences happened to me today:
(1) I was reading an article this morning about prostitution rings here in Los Angeles. In relating a story about one girl who was virtually enslaved, the article mentioned 'Stockholm Syndrome', where a victim identifies with the assailants or perpetators. I think it was Francois who posted about that last night, and gave the example of Patty Hearst. It's funny how once you hear something for the first time, you start to hear it over an over again. Just another coincidence.
(2) My roomate was hospitalized yesterday because he was experiencing spasms. He is a 54 year old AIDS patient, but in fairly good health ordinarily. I was worried that he was in the hospital because I returned home last night at 12:30 and he was not home. I also noticed that many medications were sitting on his bed, as if he were searching for something and then had to call 911. He called this morning to tell me he was in the hospital and expecting to be home in a few days, which was a relief. But before he confirmed that he was in the hospital, something funny happened.
He asked me if I was asleep. You see, just a few minutes earlier, someone was shouting outside that they were locked out. It was not my roomate, of course, but probably one of the neighbors. Over the phone, I replied yes, I had been asleep, but I had gotten up to see if someone was at the door. Then I explained that no one was there, so I went back to bed.
The coincidence is that this really had happened a few months ago. I was sleeping and so was unaware that my roomate was locked out of the apartment. He was shouting and ringing the doorbell; by the time I got to the door, he had gone downstairs. I went back to bed, thinking it was some weirdo.
So this morning, I was afraid that I had done it again! Especially spooky is that he called very soon after I heard the man shouting outside, and asked 'were you sleeping?'
Thanks for all the replies everyone. This has been amusing.

Get this folks:
My girlfriend and I have birthdates exactly 10 days apart (mine comes earlier). Our mothers have birthdates exactly 10 days apart (her mother's comes earlier). Our fathers have exactly the same birthdate.
Uncanny, isn't it?!
Do you know what the odds are of matching exactly one birthdate and having two birthdates within 10 days? I figured it to be 1 in 21,649. That is pretty steep. I certainly have not met more than 20,000 people, so it seems like quite a significant figure...it was very unlikely that I would meet someone like her, so it seems.
But what is the significance? Do you think some greater force is at work?
Uncanny as this coincidence is, I suggest that it is just that...a coincidence. Why? Well, if someone had enough time, they could easily come up with 20,000 coincidences of equal probability. Which means...it is highly likely that something will coincide, while the chance occurance appears to us puny humans to be divinely inspired.
Is it not us who give events and coincidences meaning? What if we did not celebrate birthdays? I would not even have noticed the coincidence.
Would you consider it amazing if you found out that you and your friend had the same number of ex-boyfriends/girlfriends, and each ex of theirs had the same first and last initials as one of your exes? Of course you would...the probability would be extraordinarily low...but why would you care to inquire about more than the first names of your friends' old lovers? What I am trying to demonstrate is that you will never know all the coincidences that have graced your life. If you search for some, of course you will find some.
If you want to believe in the grace of God rather than the dice of God, it is your right. I believe that the universe may behave as if there were a divinity at the helm. But that is not the same as saying there is such a divinity at the helm.
I love my girlfriend... I just love her for who she is. It detracts not at all from my sense of wonder that I no longer believe in a God guiding my life. I have had plenty of good luck lately, but I 'ain't superstitious'.

Hi Amanda,
Keep your eyes open for opportunities... they will present themselves. Make sure to do something you care about. I think you have that in mind already.
By the way, that's a cool new pic.

Fark,
lol
You make a good point. I almost put my foot in my mouth with this post, however. I was reminded upon searching that in 1942, Knorr (I believe that was the prez) announced that the League of Nations would have a successor. I was going to assume that the 'beast' imagery was not used until after the United Nations was formed. In other words, the 'prophecy' was, in fact, hindsight.
But another point has presented itself, so I will leave the 'beast' alone...
Did you know that the UN was already in infancy before the end of WWII?
I do remember reading on the UN website that 'United Nations' was coined by FDR. Remember that he passed away in 1945, before the war was over. Also before the United Nations was actually ratified. That should make you go, 'hmmm....'
Okay here is is:
The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.

PART II
The forerunner of the United Nations was the League of Nations, an organization conceived in similar circumstances during the first World War, and established in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security." The International Labour Organization was also created under the Treaty of Versailles as an affiliated agency of the League. The League of Nations ceased its activities after failing to prevent the Second World War.
http://www.un.org/aboutun/history.htm
The WT found it very easy to criticize the UN in light of the dissolution of the League of Nations following WW II. Notice that the phrase 'peace and security' was in the original charter of the League of Nations. The WT has a remarkably long history of mocking world leaders who care to make peace a goal.
Interestingly, the Bible translation used in Rutherford's time did not use the phrase 'peace and security':
See also pages 291-294 of the book Enemies, published in 1937. On page 293 of the latter book Rutherford wrote:
The old whore (Roman Catholic Church) sitting upon the back of the beast may soon be expected to say: Peace and safety; we have silenced all opponents. Then Jehovahs strange act will begin, and sudden destruction comes upon her as travail upon a woman with child.
http://wis.i8.com/peacesecurity.htm
What I am conjecturing is that the translators of the NWT inserted the phrase 'peace and security' (rather than 'peace and safety', etc) to suit their own prophetic agenda. When the exact phrase coined by the League of Nations appears in the bible, the bible verse seems to the credulous mind inspired of God to doom the 'wild beast'. After all, according to my memory, translation was begun after the end of WWII. Jehovah's little 'anointed' class must have been happy that the League of Nations was 'resurrected' in the U.N. Their enemy, 'the wild beast that was, then was not, then was again' had come back to play.
So, a quick poll:
Was the U.N. fiasco an attempt to subvert the authority of the U.N. and force the 'fulfillment' of WT prophecy?
