"A thread just about me. WOW. I must be very popular. Billy you couldnt be farther away from the truth about me or the future of me with the Witness. I will NEVER leave the truth. I have realized that the people do not practice what is being taught to them by the FS. Some do. As for the ones who do, i will contemplate thier course and imitate!" -defd Umm, defd? Aren't you taught to avoid contact with apostates? That apostate web sites and the web in general is evil, and the devil's tools? Doesn't Jehovah know all things, therefore know you are disobeying his chosen organization's leadership? I'm just asking, I'm not even a JW, so maybe I've got it wrong.

Dungeons and Dragons game & JW urban legends
by rebel8 indoes anyone remember this game from (i think) the early '80s?
it's a role playing game of some sort that included some violent imagery or something.. i remember jws (and the media, come to think of it) making a big, big deal of it.
something like it was demonized or made kids murder people.

Ok, any non-geeks might as well move on, cause I'm gonna get really nerdy here. D&D came out in the 70's, under the company TSR (Tactical Studies Rules), which was founded by a man named Gary Gygax. Later on, Gygax was forced out of the loop in his own company. D&D got more and more popular, and TSR produced several other games; the Top Secret spy game, the Gangbusters mafia 20's game, and the Star Frontiers space adventures game. By 82 or 83, D&D was so popular they ran a cartoon series based on the game rules with the same name.
D&D is still alive and well today, and is up to its third edition (fourth technically, but the newest one is affectionately called 3.5, they just revised the third edition). Its no longer printed by TSR though, they got bought out by Wizards of the Coast (which is the company behind the collectable card trading game Magic: The Gathering) in the late 90s, 98 I think. Not sure who actually owns what at this point, cause I think Hasbro toy company bought Wizards of the Coast or vice versa, as well.
As to the "D&D makes kids kill people" theme, there are 2 main incidents that are responsible for this: One is the story of college kid James Dallas Egbert III as told in the book "The Dungeon Master". He was severely depressed, possibly bipolar, and went down in the steam tunnels under the college to kill himself. This became the first urban legend about D&D, and perversions of his story began circulating all over, along with rumors that D&D players like to play 'live action' in the woods, in caves, in secret basement complexes, etc. The other reason was a really hideous movie that starred Tom Hanks in what was probably his first role ever, "Mazes and Monsters". In it, one of the players in a gaming group (depicted by Hanks) slowly begins to lose it, and D&D becomes his schizoid alternate reality, complete with a bit where he gets confused and wanders about in the subway system, nearly getting killed by a
dragonsubway train. If you've ever played D&D, and thumbed your nose at all those stupid stories about kids becoming psychos because of D&D, or if you just like a good laugh, here's a really humorous link:

JW's and blood transfusions
by danny49 ini am not a jw.
in a paper that i'm writing, i use an example of an adult jw who refuses to consent to a blood transfusion.
what do jw's believe?
-

Very good question. I'm not a JW either, but I am interested to see what the others have to say. My wife is studying with them, speaking for myself, if the situation ever comes up, I fully intend to do my best to speak to the doctors about overriding this disastrous doctrine. This of course might cause some problems with my wife, but I'd rather have an angry alive wife, than a happy dead one. I've heard that the JW's will send elders or other representatives to the hospital to make sure the blood issue is enforced according to their beliefs...all I have to say about that is, they better be prepared to deal with an angry 6' 230 pound husband.

Men In The Girlie Department.
by Englishman inhow do other guys feel about going into women's clothes shops?.
i spent ages with her ladyship in the per una section of marks & spencers today.
i was quite happy to bumble about behind her and even managed to achieve some nonchalance while i was waiting for her to try stuff on in the changing rooms.

I go to Victoria's Secret with my wife, and I have no problem with it. The only thing that drives me nuts is that she never likes anything I suggest, saying that its too racy, or she doesn't have the figure for it. My wife is one of those women who are much better looking than they give themselves credit for.

New car "motor" break in period...?
by JH in.
often i heard that with a brand new car, you can't drive at a constant speed for a long period of time, because it isn't good for a brand new motor.
they recommend driving at varaiable speeds and variable rpm for the first 1000 miles atleast.. just wondering if anyone here knows about this, and how many miles does it take for a new motor to be able to drive very long distances at constant highway speed without any problem.
-
AllAlongTheWatchtower
I never heard about the varying speed thing, but I have heard about the breaking in period where you're supposed to take it easy. However, regarding changing your oil for the first time, I have heard that nowadays the manufacturers actually use a higher grade oil than what you can buy for yourself, and that supposedly you're supposed to keep driving for 6 or 7 thousand miles on that before getting your first oil change. Not sure of that though, having never owned a new car at this point in my life, they have all been used cars.

I am a white male married to a black woman, no problems in my book there.
As to the human race joke comments, I have seen anime and fantasy pics of many different sci-fi humanoid races, some of them quite attractive. If aliens were real and I encountered any of these, I would quite probably be attracted to them. I have especially become fascinated by the concept of felinoids in this way, and if those were real I would probably have "cat scratch fever" in the same way that people say if a white person is attracted to an Asian they have "yellow fever" or to a black person, "jungle fever". Ok...yeah, I'm a geek. *shrugs*

Window Washing-why so common?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower inok, i have been around here long enough to get a basic understanding of most of the jw stuff, even though i have never been one.
one thing that continues to puzzle me though, is the constant references to jws often getting jobs as window washers.
i have seen these types of references on other sites as well as this one, so i have become convinced that it must be pretty (stereo)typical.. why?

Ok, I have been around here long enough to get a basic understanding of most of the JW stuff, even though I have never been one. One thing that continues to puzzle me though, is the constant references to JWs often getting jobs as window washers. I have seen these types of references on other sites as well as this one, so I have become convinced that it must be pretty (stereo)typical.
Why? What is it about window washing that makes it such a common job of JWs? Is it because you can wash windows at night and do field service and meetings in the day? Is it because its an easy start-up business that you can do yourself, thus hiring more JWs to all work together? Just what is it about window washing that makes it such a common reference?
I have read the posts about the WTS discouraging higher education, therefore dubs and ex-dubs often end up in janitorial work, construction, and other laborer type jobs. That I understand. Why SPECIFICALLY window washing though, is beyond me. Another thing I wonder is exactly what kind of window washing is meant. I have been in a Dunkin Donuts when the contractor comes and washes the windows, then uses a squeegee to wipe away the exess water. I have also seen those guys who, in my opinion, require a hell of a lot more fortitude, and definitely more equipment, who hang from those elevator scaffolds and wash the windows of highrise office buildings. That's a bird of a different feather. Which type is meant?

How did you all find this site???

I was searching for answers because I became concerned because of my wife getting involved with JWs. The only site I knew of that dealt with exposing false religions and cults was rickross.com, because I knew there were pages there devoted to exposing the WCG (Armstrong), which is my own background. I think I found this place through a link from rickross, but it may have been on Google, I was doing a lot of websearches that day as well.

greendawn: You say you can buy fruit juice for about $1 a liter. There are roughly 4 liters to a gallon, which is fairly equivalent then to $4 a gallon. So it would appear the prices are much the same. You had your equation backwards "I think 1L = 3.7 US gallons".
And yes, I don't buy real juices often because of their expensiveness, which is not helped by the fact that my wife is very picky about juice, she will not drink oj which contains pulp. There are generic brands of oj which are very cheap, but only the name-brands have the no pulp varieties. Also, when I do buy oj, I always get the kind which has added calcium, which my wife finds annoying but I do it anyway out of concern for her health, she never drinks milk and I know about the concerns for women of osteoperosis (sp?) later in life.
