Of course, having never seen the movie Napolean Dynamite, I may be way off base as to what you're talking about.

My favorite mythical concept is Bast (or Bastet, spelling varies), the part feline Egyptian deity. Not actually a creature, though there are some modern tie-ins probably based on the idea; like the Kzin from the sci-fi novels, the Caitians from Star Trek, and modern anime "catgirls".

Do you agree that, if there are errors in the bible, then it's all wrong?

in other words, if you can find a few errors in the bible, will you throw away the whole notion of the bible being "inspired by god".

example: if you find any error in the bible, will it take away the notion that killing is wrong, or stealing is wrong, .

so where do you draw the line, and accept certain biblical teachings and reject other biblical teachings?.

Rabbit, I saw that news item in my local paper recently, too. The first thing I thought of when I saw the line that said "these 'spies' could be waitresses or even janitors" was 'or maybe window washers?', lol.

this mornings events have got me thinking about things.

i love peanut butter, not the sweet kind but i like the old fashioned peanut butter, usually laura scudder's with no sugar or preservatives - it just tastes better imo.

i put it on everything including pancakes which are really good with peanut butter and maple syrup.

I'll buy a tub of cottage cheese and a bottle of ranch dressing, mix about half the bottle into the cottage cheese, then stir that all together and use it for potato chip or corn chip dip. Once the tub starts getting empty enough to where I'm getting more of my dip concoction on my knuckles than I am on my chips, and the chips left in the bottom of the bag are the small and broken ones anyway, I will just pour all the crumbs into the tub, and mash the whole mess together into a mush and eat it by the spoonful.

That's What I'M Talkin' About!

call me a curmudgeon.

there are just some expressions in today's vernacular that are just idiotic, and "that's what i'm talkin' about" is one of these.

it is so ghetto.. several people are saying 'blah, blah, blah, de blah and more de blah..." suddenly, a dimwit in the group hears something that dimwit didn't even mention but happens to like the subject and then dimwit blurts out, "now that is what i'm talkin' about!".

Nothing like hearing the phrase "thas mah baby daddy" to set my teeth on edge. I despise this phrase with a passion, and think it says much about society and the state of relationships and marriage (or lack thereof) these days.

George Carlin is one of my favorite comedians; in his comedy routine he often talks about his linguistic pet peeves:

"Best thing since sliced bread! Sliced bread?!! That's the pinnacle of human achievement?!! If aliens ever visit the planet, they're gonna leave cause the best thing we ever produced is sliced bread! What's so f---ing great about sliced bread anyway? You take a loaf of bread and a knife and you slice the f---ing thing!"

"Down the tubes -- hear that one a lot. People say, "Ah, the country is going down the tubes." What tubes? Have you seen any tubes? Where are these tubes? And where do they go? And how come there's more than one tube? It would seem to me, one country, one tube. But is every state all of a sudden have to have its own tube now? One tube is all you need. But a tube that big? While I find this all interesting, I don't put much stock in it...mostly because of the Heisenberg Principal; observing/testing something can skew or change the results of one's observation/test-especially if one is self testing. Since I am aware, a thinking individual, I can't help but think about the answers as I'm giving them, and having some limited knowledge of psychology, I generally can intuit what questions are driving at or trying to establish.

I would guess that every one of the personality types one can be assigned by your results is somewhat flattering to the person, and probably mirrors their own already existing self image. Much like horoscopes. Admittedly, I did like the result I was given, and agree that it describes me at least moderately well. And I also realize that my statements above are mildly ironic, since I exhibited many of the traits ascribed to me by writing it, and what I said.

Pardon my ignorance, I've never been a JW myself, and joined this site when I became concerned about my wife being interested in them...so wtf are the "VDM questions"? Much of my knowledge of the JW doctrine is secondhand, though I did some studying myself to see what they were about, and I've never heard of this...is this some old tenet that has since been abandoned, or what? A quick Google search only netted me 2 solid hits, one about Eisenhower's parents being Witnesses (surprise there), and his father "passing the VDM questions", and the other was a talk forum where one of the posters listed as part of their credentials V.D.M. (verbum dei minister)...

The points of difference seem to be with reference to the relationship of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society to the various ecclesias and to the church as a body, the VDM questions, and "The Finished Mystery" as the seventh volume of STUDIES IN THE SCRIPTURES. Professed Atheists who have helped society

there seem to be quite a number of atheists who comment here.

when they argue how bad religion has been for society they point to actions done in the name of religion that are indeed horrific, such as the inqusitions.

there are also examples of course of non believers who have done great damage to society.

Wow... I find it interesting that you inserted "supposedly" in there. " I noticed that too Elsewhere...and maybe I just have a chip on my shoulder because I detest it when people say things like "there's no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole", but I find the use of the word 'professed' a bit questionable, too. As in, they only said they were atheists, but really weren't? Or was that just to mean those who admitted to being atheist publicly or were outspoken about it?

Myself, at 13, from the Worldwide Church of God. I've told that story elsewhere on here, I had become a ward of the state and was living in a foster home. The ironic part of it was that when I was told to meet the minister privately, I thought maybe he was going to congratulate me on 'staying in the truth' despite 'living in the world' or something to that effect, maybe offer me some advice and tell me to stay strong. I couldn't have been more wrong...in retrospect I can laugh at it, and my own sort of pompous attitude, at the time I was crushed.

I didn't have a chance to respond to it at the time, but I read the post someone made recently about their vigorous clapping and how they hoped it would get them noticed...I could very much relate to that incident, in some ways that's about how I felt the day I was DF'd; thought I was about to be singled out for an award or something, then WHAM. You're bad association, a bad apple that could spoil the whole barrel, a bad example and influence on other children.
