Cognitive Dissonance Runs Deep
by vinman inwhile it is true that maybe 1 or 2 things woke you up (like myself), it is interesting to reflect on the reality of what you did not believe, even if you were a true believer and would of died for the organization.
here is my list (not a complete list, i'm sure their is more).
what is your list like?.

I was raised in it and left when young. I had an interesting thought, maybe. . .when I was growing up, I was told it was the truth(tm). I understood there could only be one true religion and that was it. What I mean to say is that I didn't think I COULD question anything. The cognitive dissonance bit in full force. . .I questioned a few things that didn't make logical sense to me as a child(at a home,Thurs night, bookstudy when the wtbts answer in the book was stupid) and got scolded for it after my mom was counseled and she was mortified and I got huge spanking for my question. Studies are not to learn, but to parrot. Anyway, I kept telling myself for years that I was bad, wrong, disobedient, ungrateful, etc for even wondering to myself.
JWs like to say we leave for personal issues. . .and to some extent I think that's true. We usually stay in loyally for personal reasons, not so much actual devotion to the teachings. We let a lot of nonsense slide right by because on balance, it works. Many of us might not even question our own hypocrisy because our reasons for being a JWs are less spiritual than they are carnal, practical, familial reasons. BUT, have a personal thing come up that is connected to the WT and all the things that were easier to ignore suddenly become prominent or we no longer can ignore them or we realize how much we did so. The scale tips.
Most religion doesn't make it so much of an all or nothing proposition. The WT loses people more than other churches because any questioning is quashed. Once we question a teaching unique to jws, we have to balance our relationships and personal integrity/conscience Even those who stay in, but are mentally out, know what it is and they all have their ties, but those ties are because a relationship requires staying. The JW affiliation only rests on the life of a parent or spouse. I think JWs are internally more fractured than other churches, but they require dissidents to play in order to maintain relationships. Everyone is trapped by their partner/family.

I came across this today. . .is it just me or did we have a lot more scholarly types of debates back then? Now it all seems to be about playing "gotcha" with the org. -

Uh-oh, the elders want to pay us a visit!!
by BeautifulMind inso, hubby gets contacted today by one of the elders saying 2 of them want to pay us a visit and asks him when we are available.
we both had the heart drop feeling for a few minutes lol.
but he promptly, and politely, informed them that we are very busy but he will let them know when we are free.

Anyone find it ironic that people in the inquisition at least had a discussion about ideas and concepts, rather that strict loyalty tests. Just read about Galileo. Even though it was stacked against him, he was able to face his accusers and have an intellectual discourse, the evidence still being a matter of record, half a millennium later.
No doubt, crap happened, but ideas were discussed, not just suppressed in some cases. No option for that among JWs.

How many here believed, down deep in your heart that the end would come in 1975?
by James Mixon ini was straddling the fence on that one, just in case they were right.
i don't recall.
telling anyone this is your last chance.

I was 8 in '75. I believed it. My excuse was that I was eight.
Afterwards though, I was skeptical and all those fears while still there, still made it easier for me to question things. I'm glad I did!

by cofty inan older man and wife - ray and mary - got chatting to me today.
they were tourists admiring local wildlife.
i gave them a few tips on where to go to see some interesting things and it wasn't long before they were telling me about how awful the world is "nowadays" and paradise yadda yadda.

Yay! The going back when you are vlnerable, but have a clue is good. Makes you a tiny bit more cynical even as you accept the love bombing because you ARE vulnerable. then the fog clears. -

We have a new style kh here, built near freeways, hotels and a large medical clinic. Its small. The gates are locked all the time, shut when meetings are going on. Its weird. Local mormon churches have gates open during activities, jws are in there loke its jail. In my area are 2 halls, 2 English cong, 2 spanish and 2 others. Vietnamese and Cambodian, I think. Never seen a jw on the streets or my neighborhood except when one of them thrust a tract at me in mcdonalds parking lot as she was headed to hall one sun morn.i guess her half hour walk was a good way to get in some time.
New hall is a single, adequate parking. Both old and new halls have high security gates. New hall has many windows, old hall has none. An old hall on other side of freeway in a nice neighborhood with beautiful grounds is gone now. I think they are in storefront locale.
