Why'd they do it? Desperation
Why't they get away with it? They are the shark jumping religion and have gotten away with telling people to die rather than buy a political card or take blood. To DIE if necessary so that they can distribute MAGAZINES! To go to prison rather than be a nurse for the government during a time of war.
They get away with whatever they tell their minions. It's often tragic. This one is just stupid.

Great first post!
Welcome to the real world. Two words to live by as you work your way through faith issues.
Generosity (time/money/patience/whatever)
Gratitude
If you fill your life with those things, you don't need to know it all. You don't need to become bitter or angry. You can just move forward in a loving manner.

A Chance To Plant A Seed That We All Have
by dubstepped ini'd like to brainstorm something with the rest of you.
this summer at the regional conventions we all know by now that a talk on shunning is going to be given.
we all know what that talk will likely point to.

To those who attended, attendance up or down at your memorial?
by Crazyguy ininteresting to see if there's a noticeable trend in memorial attendance.
also did they talk more then usual about ones not to partake?

It used to be that the halls had one or two congregations, and they would all fit for the Memorial in two somewhat crowded sessions-about all they had time for due to the timing of the thing.
NOW, many congregations are economizing by having 3-6 congregations (yep, I saw one with six, recently) and there is no way that all of them can fit into the hall in the time frame they consider "commanded". Even when some of the congo's are smallish, like a Cambodian or Vietnamese congo, they speak a language that can't be understood by any others in the greater community, so they can't consolidate, so the English Spanish congregations CAN consolidate and leave the halls for the minority language congregations.

The saga of Russell and Rutherford
by Terry ini think little charlie russell having been born after many miscarriages by his mother, was doted on and coddled beyond normal.
his mother died of a fever epidemic when he was about 9 and he may have associated burning with fever with burning in hell.he seemed to be obsessed about hell for awhile even to the point of graffiti on sidewalks marking scriptures as warnings.he was privately tutored and brought into the men's clothing business and given and adult's responsibilities.
although the family was presbyterian, there appears to be a streak of insubordination in the genes because they switched to a congregational church with an autonomy of leadership and no organizational oversight.why was this a big deal, do you think?

Facing mortality after leaving the witnesses
by truthseeker intell me i'm not overly thinking this.. i'm 39 years old...still youngish...but i worry about getting old.
i look in the mirror and it depresses me.
i suppose i still cling to watchtower utopia when no one would age over 25.. i used to look forward to paradise earth because it meant all the evil in the world, nuclear warfare, terrorist attacks and sickos would be no more, but we are deep in the 21st century with no end in sight.. appreciate your comments.

I left the Borg when young, but I still get a little freaked out realising I will one day die. I don't blame the Borg for that much, I think mortality hits everyone in their 30s if they haven't had a brush with it earlier.
My mid 40s, menopause, becoming a grandparent. All together now!!! Ouch
