People can be self righteous and arrogant. I have seen atheists going on superiority tears here and you all know it. If one wants to be an ass, they don't need to have a religion to be one. This forum has seen a LOT of snippy, superior arrogance from all comers. Believers or not.

"Look how quickly Sweden has been falling apart." I just checked out the Gross national happiness ranking of Sweden, and they don't seem to think they are falling apart. http://worldhappiness.report/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2016/03/HR-V1Ch2_web.pdf. I do think too much openness to immigration and throwing out benefits to all and sundry is going to make for long term problems, especially when combined with a certain amount of racism and a lot of ghettoization. You get a huge group of marginalized people, any people and there will be problems. The cracks in the policy are definitely showing.
Being generous in letting people in, while effectively maintaining a segregated society is going to cause problems. Do I think there were good intentions? Yes. But humans are kind of persistent in our flawed humanity.Poverty and a lack of opportunity combined with a weariness of the costs involved and the issues that the overwhelming poverty brings is going to result in issues. Throw in some fear (which is fair enough, after all the immigrants know better than most that there is a real danger when an outside group quickly starts using up resources and plays by different rules.) Then you have the normal thugginess of young people who are un or underemployed and bored and yep, there are issues. The country is not falling apart, but they are responding to some real issues.
Sharia law is not really the issue. Economics is the issue. No one is afraid of women wearing burkhini's or even burquas. That's just the excuse to further marginalize Muslims by hostile non-Muslims.
I don't wear headcoverings unless I am in a place where folks commonly do (When in rome and all that). NO ONE in my life has tried to force headcoverins on me. TWO men I know, who are very devout and lived or live in my home (not my husband) both think I should, but they treat me respectfully and we can agree to disagree. The folks in my 'circle' are not dogmatic about it and regard it as a choice for me to make. In the Quran, the mention of modesty was in order for women to be given proper respect and not harrassed. If wearing it is going to get me abused (or people playing chicken with me as I cross a parking lot, which happened once while covering in Texas) then I think it is obedient in spirit to not wear it, if someone tries to press the ONLY verse in the Quran about this subject on me. I know it better than they do:)
BTW, I have no use for cultural traditions disguised as religion. If a cultural tradition promotes good things and discourages evil things, I'm all for it. As good culture. Many traditions just support misogyny, racism, agism, nationalism and disrespect for others. They incorporate cultural sense of superiority and prejudices. I discourage and educate against that at every turn, whether in class or working with young women in my community.I have a first generation immigrant family that I work with a lot and the girls have a really smart and well balanced attitude about their family traditions vs. their faith. Even RELIGION vs. faith. I am happy to see that kind of critical thinking.
Classism and racism happens everywhere, even in Sweden. Take out religion altogether though and they are still going to be torked about the immigration issues, and they have a reason to be as terrorism aside, there are very real risks when rapidly bringing in a huge group of economically disadvantaged people whose language and culture are vastly different and who have been uprooted from their lives and family and homes. They will get over it. Mostly. Like we did with most of our minority groups. Still some rocky roads there, though, and still people will make disparaging remarks about an entire HUGE group of people and think they are morally superior in every way. Humanity is an ongoing process:)

That you feel contempt for your husbands belief system is understandable, but don't show contempt FOR HIM. He is deluded, as were you, as were most of us here. We were/are not contemptible, even if we hunt! Even if we follow manipulative, evil men that we do not see as being evil or manipulative.
As to hunting. I don't hunt. My family did. We fished, too. If we had not when I was a child, I would have never eaten meat or fish except at school. Animals in grocery stores are now, more than ever, free range, grass fed, humanely treated. . . unless you are seeking out the worst quality of meat. Try to hold back your judgement on that one. It's pretty unfair and hypocritical at first glance, and maybe you will see it if you think it over a bit more. Your husband does not deserve contempt for hunting, as long as he does it in a lawful and responsible manner.
Eating meat is a choice. But once you make the choice to eat it, you can't be judging the slaughterers or the butchers. Abattoirs are horrific places to have to go whether you are the slaughtered or the slaughterer. Or just an observer, as I have been a few times.

Off On A Trip - But Little Enthusiam
by Joe Grundy innever was a jw, but been here a long time.. off on a trip in a week or so, uk to andorra to stay with a friend for 10 days or so (beautiful place) then a week or so wending through france back home.. did the same trip the last couple of years -it was wonderful.
met some lovely people, including an ex-polce woman over coffees and calvados after dinner.. but ... i don't feel so enthusiastic about this trip.
i'll visit the cathar sites and other places.. maybe- just maybe - i've come to the conclusion that these trips are not as much fun if you don't have a companion to share it with..

dear Joe Grundy,
I'm terribly jealous. If this is a venal sin, I'm jealous enough to be in BIG trouble. I hope you have a wonderful trip and delightful companionship along the way.
My son wants a new game called Carcassone(sp?) and they are out of them all over Houston, so the place caught my eye. He is absolutely fascinated with France. In two years when he is 18, you should check with me because he is totally fascinated with France (it all started when he became interested in Joan of Arc-historically, not religiously, no worries) He would be a great travel companion. I'll take him myself if I can afford it. He has travelled to Italy (prefers Florence thought he feels like he should like Rome better since it has such an intense amount of history attached. But he loved Florence in his heart, and that trumped historical stuff)
Can you send us some pics to show him? I'd be ever so appreciative! Thank you.
M.

Religious law courts exist in this country already. JWs, Mormons, Catholics, Jews, Presbyterians---to some extent most religions have their religious requirements and some kind of enforcement structure.
The kind of sharia court you are all afraid of-like the village elders in small corners of India or the backwoods of timbuktoo are never going to have a legal foot in our country, but religious courts that decide on whether a person can be RELIGIOUSLY married or divorced are not going to be respected in our law when they attempt to supersede secular law. For example, a JW will always be able to marry whoever they want. A Mormon, an Atheist, a Venusian. Whether they will be acceptable to the JW community is another thing altogether. A JW child can be DF'd, but LEGALLY (unless parents play games), the parents cannot kick a minor out of the house and say they are within their religious rights.
Many fundamentalist Christians these days are marrying without secular or official licenses. They are living together (or become common law spouses eventually in some states), but are not considered by their peers to be "living in sin" since they pledged their lives to each other in a public way or announced it. Religious law will always have rights in thsi country so long as it doesn't infringe on secular law.
A "gang" of any group/religion/ethnicity/sports club that is not controlled by the local government is just a gang that is operating outside of the law. If the local authorities let it go on, shame on them.

Warning: Watchtower computer dept. registers accounts on Ex-JW sites, coerces people to divulge their personal details
by WTS Archive inwe had a bad experience with watchtower trying to infiltrate our forums.
let this story be a warning for all you guys here.
if you value your privacy do not ever send your real contact details to anyone, even if you trust them (because their accounts could be hacked or accessed by their relatives - and yes, this happened to people i know several times already).

There is nothing that the borg can do to me anymore. Tattle on me to my mom? She is under no illusions and refuses to deal with me (again, until she starts talking to me again). I wish I could turn the tables on them some way. They just piss me off on the principle of the thing. They have spoiled my relationship with my mom forever because my mom is insane about them and has some creeping dementia to boot. It's like she's dead already, and then she resurrects herself and she is old and I can't do to her what she is willing to do to me. Arrrgghh. I'm so over the borg.
That JWs feel so compelled to spy on others (with or without the explicit egging on by the the Borg) just says something about the entire organization that is so sick, sick, sick. They tattle, they spy, they take notes so they can harm others, destroy families and shake up communities. So what if someone wants to fade or is there, active and not buying it? The borg should not be doing anything corporately or organizationally that can harm them, if leaked. And there is nothing that a JW can do to the organization to hurt it when they are showing up, counting hours and giving talks. If all half hearted JWs just disappeared, not many JWs would be left at all.

That's pretty rude. There is a lot of rudeness in the sports world, but it sure shows the world a lack of class and respect when one does it on the international stage of Olympic sports.
There is a national dislike of Israel in Egypt. It's not about Jews as much as about Israel (and too many Muslims have not made that distinction, just like some non-Muslims haven't distinguished between Muslim and terrorist) They have some mutual animosity, but honestly, the Olympics are a place where all that nonsense is supposed to be set aside in the spirit of sportsmanship and cooperation.

Spanish-Language mosque is welcoming Latino converts.
by James Mixon inthe associated press by allan turner.. this is a interesting turn of events, people grounded in catholicism i'am surprised.. latinos now comprise almost 40 percent of the population in texas and 20 percent in the.
u.s. pew reports that almost 1 in 4 identify themselves as former catholics.
second half of the century, islam is projected to become the world's dominant religion.. now, with the opening early this year of centro islamico, texas'-and possibly the nation's-only.

There are people of all descents that come to our country and harm others. It only seems to matter when they are Muslim or Hispanic. I guess you can make of that what you will. A criminal Arab(or any variation of brown who might be assumed to be Muslim because of general origins but) who turns out to be Christian or something else quickly disappears from the headlines once their religion is confirmed to NOT be Muslim

Print newspapers are a dying breed-they will need other funding because the digital world has changed the face of journalism forever. About 9 years ago I lost a job in the newspaper industry as I was edged out by electronic proofs that made my boss's job much less personnel intensive and she could take on more of my pre-proofs job. . . which was bogus. I really loved working at the newspaper.:( It turns out that my entire department (originally 6 people) was eliminated ultimately, other than the supervisor.
Printing is a business and any of you watching the WTBTS saga with the electronic age knows that internet is edging out the literal printed word in a very real way. If you look at electronic news-even "real" sites like the NY Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian---the spelling and grammar is a disgrace to journalism. It has changed our world.

I'm in Houston and we have a lot of Hispanic Muslims here. There is a jummah in Spanish here already, I think, but not a whole mosque. There is a Ladies Mosque in the works, too. "The pink mosque" which I think is kind of trite, but I guess it keeps it clear. . .
