That is quite a remarkable comment from the nurse. As much as JWs sprout being the only ones with a hope, they have no more faith than any other person.

Please do not send your Elders to my house!
by Pinku inthis was the last sentence my dad wrote to gb in his letter explaining why he is disassociating from jws.
it seems gb did not send copy of the letter to the body of elders!
sometime later two elders visited him to encourage him to rethink his decision.

What Happened to the Religion I Left in 1995?
by JoshJeffries injosh here, new to the board.
glad to know this site is here.. i would not be writing this if it were not 2014. i was a ministerial servant and regular pioneer who left the jehovahs witnesses back in 1995/96, around that time.
i left suddenly, didnt fade away, just left when something clicked one day in my head during the morning shower and made me realize this religion wasnt true.

Welcome. It is great to see the religion through the eyes of someone who has been away for so long. I knew it wasn't true in 1995, but hung on for another 10 years, and have now spent another 10 years actively involved from the other side. So the changes appear more gradual and not so shocking.
I had a dicusssion with my brother in law after the 1995 generation change saying that the Watchtower obviously did not believe the end was any time soon. He said "we'll know soon enough." I think he probably had in mind that the end would definitely be here by 1914. I wish I probed him for what date he was thinking, and what he would do if it was no here by then. Like your friends, back then he would have had such a cockey attitude about it he could have declared it was not the truth if the end was not here by 2014, but now he finds new ways to justify this system continuing.

Reading the Bible Alone "Will Lead you to Apostate Thinkings!" Stay a Watchtowerite!
by BucketShopBill in"from time to time, there have arisen from among the ranks of jehovah's people those, who, like the original satan, have adopted an independent, faultfinding attitude...they say that it is sufficient to read the bible exclusively, either alone or in small groups at home.
but, strangely, through such 'bible reading,' they have reverted right back to the apostate doctrines that commentaries by christendom's clergy were teaching 100 years ago.
the watchtower, aug. 15, 1981.. .

It is one of the most damning of all Watchtower quotes. Fancy admitting that Christendom teaches what the Bible alone says, but to understand Jehovah's Witness doctrine you need additional literature from their leaders.

Excellent letter. Though short, you manage to incorporate so many powerful and thought provoking points.

Any recent wack-a-doodle elder comments in your congo lately?
by sir82 inour go-to wack-a-doodle elder moved to a new congregation a few years back.
the position has been vacant since then.. we had an elder move in a few months back.
he appears to be angling for the position of resident wack-a-doodle.. at last night's service meeting, he said (paraphrased): "as a congregation, we've been busier than ever before with our special campaign.

Great thread.
At my cousin's wedding the elder said that she should consider herself to be like a chair, there to support her husband.

https://bitcoin.org/en/innovation is interesting. It seems Bitcoin suffers from an identity crisis. Bitcoin has the reputation of being a valueless, speculative geek currency, or maybe a 20th century barter card. Yet the article shows that it incorporates a means of securely transfering payments. Maybe that aspect needs a new identity such as Bittorrent, no that's taken, Bittransfer or Bitpay. Can the transactional side be separated from the currency, or is the currency required for the payments to take affect?

Turns out it was true - "the truth" was the only reason my marriage lasted so long

I really just feel like such a fool!
I don't think so. It is difficult to understand our own motivations, as it is that of others. The entire dynamic of marriage is difficult too, particularly once there are children to consider. Mix into that how you are dealing with the toxic upbringing of both of you being raised as JWs and how it destorts perceptions of reality and morals. Your post makes you sound very caring, rather than coming across as a fool.

Simon - Actually I'm surprised that this aspect hasn't gotten as much attention. In years to come will people look back at the wated energy to 'discover' some numbers and shake their heads?
Good point. Data centers use huge amounts of energy for the servers, and then for air conditioners. There must be more efficient energy recovery systems to harvest energy from server heat to cool the room, similar to how hybrid cars can harvest heat to charge their batteries.
Besti - the underlying technology could be used for many things where validating identity without a 3rd party middleman would be useful. Examples include the exchange of contracts and voting systems.
Can you explain how that would work. I'm showing my ignorance here, but what does bitcoin technology have to do with identity validation?

Poster with basic math on shunning - for JW parents
by Fernando inyour thoughts on such a poster?.
(http://religions.pewforum.org/reports says: "jehovah's witnesses have the lowest retention rate of any religious tradition.
only 37% of all those who say they were raised as jehovah's witnesses still identify themselves as jehovah's witnesses.").

ABibleStudent's question is valid. How about as a statement:
Since 2/3 children raised as a Jehovah's witness leave the religion, shunning destroys families.
