good post. I have this burning desire to convert Witnesses, but realise it is not always the best thing to do. JWs may be wrong but there seems to be no absolute right that i am in a position to point people to. Many people cope better as a Witnesss than to have it all taken away from them. A non witness that i unloaded on advised me to be careful taking a persons faith, as having nothing can be more damaging than the most damaging of religions.
I too have an intrigue with Wiccan at the moment, though too early to say i have faith in anything at this time.

You know, Witnesses haven't cornered the market on being wrong.
by free2beme ini have been out of the witness religion since the 1990's and i see from reading former witness sites that it is common for people to do something i used to do.
which was that i made a big deal out of all the wrong things the witnesses did and do.
i thought it was some how my responsiblity to tell others when i had the chance, and even when i made the chance, about all the things i knew.

potter and the clay
by peacefulpete ingiven the successful completion of the mapping out the chimpanzee genome(new scientist breaking news - the chimpanzee genome is unveiled), i imagine in a few years some efforts will be made to use that information to attempt to create a human/chimp hybrid.
let's fast forward a decade or two and we have succeeded in producing the first chimp hybrid with human mental abilities.
how do we treat such a being?

Did you enjoy being a JW?
by JH inevery time i went to a meeting, book study, or whatever, the great majority of people looked as if they were truly happy to be a jw.
their smiles looked genuine.
they seemed to love talking to each other.. i, on the other hand, wasn't really happy to be at the meetings.

I loved it for the friendships. Even when i could no longer bear to listen to what i knew was twisted reasoning i still kept going for the socialisation afterwards, and i still miss it greatly.
In the back of my mind, even as a kid i always had Pauls words "If the dead are not to be raised let us eat, drink, for tomorrow we are to die". I always knew that there were other things I would rather be doing if it was not for Armageddon, and just hoped living a life of sacrifice was not all in vain. -

It's a bumpy ride. I thought I was happily moving on with my life now. A couple of weeks ago I missed my first convention ever. The Saturday I was absolutely on top of the world about it and then Sunday I was very down. Same thing, felt sad about missing friends and not knowing how long it will take to make a new circle of close friends at my age.

When I was a witness every list like this and any information of cults seemed to be a personal attack on JW's. Little did i realise that they are written for people in general, there are numerous cults similar to the witnesses.

Since it is obvious all religion is wrong why do so many believe?
by jwfacts inany religion that claims it is the only correct one is obviously wrong.
by it's arrogance it becomes mutually exclusive of any other religion.
when one steps back they can see that the contradiction of one religion over the others is a proof that they all must be wrong.

Stopthepain and tetra, good point.
I agree, nothing is done without a motive. People may claim they act without any desire for compensation, but there is always payment, even if it is just that doing a good deed makes you feel good.
If God said there was no resurrection no one would worship him. People don't worship out of love for God and appreciation for the gift of life, but rather because they worship in expectation of the payment of everlasting life. If God said he would destroy everyone at Armageddon, including JW's, and that there is no ressurection, I would be willing to bet there would be no Jehovah's Witnesses before too long.
My family always say they dont care when Armageddon comes, they are JW's because they love God. I will ask them if they would still love God if there was no resurrection. -

Brainwashing/Mind control
by Evanescence indo you think the jehovah's witnesses used any brainwashing or mind control techniques on their members?.
what brainwashing techniques do you think they used?.
what do you think works best on jw's to get them out of the mind control?

It is virtually impossible to totally brainwash a person. However the following are the aspects that affect a JW.
Fear of God, disfellowshipping, worldly people, armageddon
Guilt
Controlled access to information
Routine
There are many things that cause a JW to open their eyes. For some people it is emotional issues, for others it is doctrinal. What got me going was the significance of the changes from a religion that claims it has always taught the same truth. I jotted the ones that affected me at www.jwfacts.com -

Littletoe,
Still waiting with keen expectation for your opinion on why people need religion. -

Q that is quite a stir, the point is interesting but questionable. It tends to hold to some of the JW assumptions.
Religion is not necessarily about having high control 'because we are right about everything and so will never change'. Many Christians believe it is about accepting faith in Jesus as our Saviour. Therefore they can be vague about doctrine and change with the times. As long as the members show love to each other and believe in God.
The next step to that sort of belief is that we can show love and believe in God without religion. That appears to me to be a step in the right direction, and is already happening in a lot of educated countries.
