  Since Jesus did not use the word Jehovah why should you? Jesus is always recorded in the NT as usually saying either Father or Lord. Why is his example not good enough for you?

  why did ct russell name his magazine zions watchtower, herald of christs presence (now the watchtower)?

  i cant find reference to that anywhere.

  it is interesting that the witnesses legal corporation is also watchtower bible and tract society.

  Freemasons are adamant that Russell wasnt a Freemason. Like you said. Golden Age, Watchtower, pyramids, eye of horus, cross and crown are all Masonic symbols.

  when i left the witnesses, i picked up a bunch of christian books on what the bible says.

  isn't it weird that you have to have so many books, just to tell you what another book is saying?

  anyway, i went through this phase where i still wanted to argue scripture with people.

  I am wanting to get out of that stage but can't, because i still have the silly misconception that i may be able to save my family. Anyway I know my knowledge of doctrine is not going to make any difference so it must be time to move it.

  To the other queststion, the Christian name for God is Lord. There is no evidence whatsoever that Jesus ever pronounced YHWH out loud. Remember that Jesus would have be stoned for blasphemy if anyone heard him say YHWH. No known ancient NT documents have ever been found that contain the name of God.

  I have written an article about Jehovah at

  Almost certainly is was pronounced as Yahweh or Yahuweh. Definitely not Jehovah. However as English does not have to be the same as the original language JW's argue that there is nothing wrong with saying Jehovah.
  The names such as Jehosophat are wrong for the same reason Jehovah is wrong.

  the real reason why young people get baptized .... to make their parents happy and proud.

  to be able to get married (which is some cases, is to get away from parents).

  ... okay, okay, i know it depends on how young we are talking.

  I have known several that got baptised in their 20's. Why? Because of all the pressure about marriage. Anyone that wanted to go our with them was warned away because they were not technically Witnesses.
  Many of the under 12's that i know who were baptised are now d'd. How anyone is allowed to devote themselves to an organisation at that age is beyond me. You cant have sex till 16, get married till 18, but can get baptised at any age. Yet the consequences of devotion to the Org can be a lot more far reaching and long term then either of the other options.

  Great post.
  I still suffer from guilt everytime that I think of God in the light you paint, yet the bible gives no other way to understand him.
  Long before I doubted the WTS I struggled with the Witness concept of why God permits suffering. The claim man has free will is baseless. In reality, if you do not do as God wills, he will destroy you, sooner or later. Therefore we do not have free will, so why pretend we do and allow 6000 years of suffering. He could have just created humans in the first place with the ability to do exactly as he wants, because in the new system that is all he will allow anyway.
  I am starting to have to accept the fact that the bible is not inspired, and that it is fine not to agree with the agressive vindictive God that it paints.

  i think it is time to get of the tms schedule, i haven't given a talk in over a year and don't want to be on the list any more.

  do you think the elders would get on my case if i did this?

  is it a wise choice?.

  Love it, what a great concept. I wonder how many expletives you could say before being tackled off the stage. I know a guy on microphones that tripped over a bag and said **ck. He didn't get to do microphones after that.
  I also appreciate what i learnt by being on the school. For a couple of years i selectively did talks that were on topics i could cope with, and handed back the ones that i felt strongly against. It has helped with my career. Earlier this year I travelled around Australia presenting a roadshow with Microsoft. I was chosen over the others at work for my speaking ability.

  Herbert Armstrong/WWCOG ??

  tonight while at a restaurant discussing jw topics my mom told me that herbert armstrong was on the wt society board of directors years ago and that he ended up leaving over doctrinal issues, and was subsequently branded an apostate by the wt society, and after this he founded the worldwide church of god.

  can anybody else verify this?

  it does seem believable since a majority of the wwcog doctrines mirror those of the wt society.

  There is an interesting article at http://www.wcg.org/lit/AboutUs/media/forgive.htm entitled "forgive us our trespasses." by the new leader. It shows how the previous teachings, which were very similar to JW's were flawed and they now believe similar to main stream Christianity. They have adopted the Trinity, the Cross, and Christmas.
  I doubt the WTS will ever do the same. Since changing doctrine WCG membership is now just a fraction of what it was under Armstrong.

  My wife came off the school saying she got too nervous to give talks, which was true. Some similar non-offensive excuse may work without getting too much attention.
