Welcome. My wife is from Manila, and mother in law is still a JW who was born in Iloilo. I went to Subic and swam with dolphins at Ocean Adventure in about 2010. I often contemplate retiring in the Philippines.

Constant out-of-context quoting; how do Writing dept. cope with that?
by Anders Andersen ini am just wondering here: almost every single quote in jw literature for which a source can be found, is taken out of context..
personally, i have checked almost every quote in the 5-questions brochure, some on dating and the cross in reasoning book, and some in magazine articles i found interesting..
just checked the "they envisioned a universe subject to whims of gods" quote in the feb 2016 awake..

I think it is quite likely that they often do not research thoroughly enough to even realise it is out of context. They see a catchy sentence, possibly not even in the original publication, and are not aware of the meaning surrounding that statement. I have been guilty of that myself, particularly when I first was looking for Watchtower quotes, finding a sentence that says what I wanted, without fully considering the context.

"If I wasn't born a JW, I would never have become one."
by OneEyedJoe ini've seen it mentioned by a few on the forum that at some point there was a realization that had they not been born a jw, they never would've converted no matter how many times the jws tried to study with them.
this was my experience too, and i'm wondering how universal it is for those that were born-in but eventually left.
i think i started having this thought (more specifically that if i were not born a jw, i would surely have become an atheist by now) in my late teens.

You I always felt guilty about having to chance to survive Armageddon, as I knew I would never have converted if not born in.
Nothing in the publications seemed compelling enough to convince someone to believe it was the true religion. I doubted for as long as I remember, and it hard to understand why I didn't trust the doubts, but thought doing more would help build faith.

Getting baptised is a very short term solution. In time you will quite likely get disfellowshipped, and that will destroy your relationship with your father far worse than it is now. If you manage to fade later and become inactive, you will then have your father on your case again about being inactive.
The better long term solution is not get baptised, face the immediate consequences if your father does follow through with his threats, but know that in the long term there will remain a better chance of some sort of relationship.

No Sports Cars Please!
by snugglebunny ini read on a jw forum that jw's came in for disapproval if they drove either sports cars or 2-door cars.
the reasoning was that a driver couldn't easily take fellow dubbies out preaching in such a vehicle.
was that ever official policy or just local nonsense from a grumpy po?.

When I bought a 300zx similar to this one, there were a lot of negative comments from the serious minded ones, and it seemed to convince them there was no hope left for me. The young guys loved it though, and two different couples used it as a wedding car.

If JWs were to change their name what would they change it to?
by slimboyfat inwas it 1931 when they adopted jehovah's witnesses?
(at the time with lower case w) isn't it about time now they changed name again?
i mean everything else is changing why not the name!

I don't know Paul, I get your point about it's value as a USP but the name 'Jehovah's Witnesses' is a tainted brand
Maybe. They could change their name to "Christian Witnesses of Truth," for marketing purposes. I do think though they should retain Jehovah as their God, and stick to their version of Arianism. The Trinity is a complex concept, and with the dumbed-down magazines, their target audience like the simplicity of Jehovah as God and Jesus as the son.

Is the Watchtower organisation facing the biggest crisis of its history?
by slimboyfat inrecent developments make me think they might be.
the problems they are facing are not just lack of funds but also draining authority, and the two could be a heady and explosive mix.
one of the best analyses ever written of the watchtower was a book called "trumpet of prophecy" by sociologist james beckford in the 1970s.

No.
The biggest crisis was the 1914 fail, followed by Russell's death. 75% left. Rutherford resurrected from the ashes the religion branded with his own unique style.
If 75% left now, they would still have 2 million followers with billions of dollars in equity. The next charismatic figurehead would have the perfect springboard to launch the religion from, put his own stamp upon, and if he desired a huge cash resource to live off.
in 2015 Watchtower spent 1/4 billion looking after missionaries and special pioneers. The current Governing Body are winding back this unnecessary waste of money, unnecessary branches and printing expenses, so that the religion can operate within its means. After shedding all that dead weight, anyone with decent leadership skills could take over and set up for great luxury for decades to come.
